A Leger and Leger poll found a strong majority of Canadians say Canada doesn't need new immigrants. Furthermore, they don't want more multiculturalism. They want immigrants to assimilate. In fact, they're more strongly in favour of immigrants assimilating than Americans are! So many NAZIS for herbie to rant at now!

A majority of Canadians feel that the country does not need new immigrants and people are divided over whether newcomers should have to give up their customs, according to a new national poll.

The survey, conducted by Leger for the Association for Canadian Studies found that 60 per cent of respondents disagreed that “Canada needs new immigrants,” with the highest levels of opposition found in Alberta (65 per cent), Ontario (63 per cent) and Quebec (61 per cent), followed by Manitoba and Saskatchewan (60 per cent), the Atlantic provinces (56 per cent) and British Columbia (48 per cent).

Yeah i saw that. Somehow the liberals managed to make even immigration look bad to canadians :)

Some interesting things to note - even most immigrants aren't big on immigration. I think it was 51 percent of immigrants said we needed more, which is within the margin.

This is going to be a bit of an issue for carney who still plans to bring in a LOT of immigrants, even if it's less than justin did.

But our economy has become entirely dependent on immigration at the moment and without it it will be quite obvious that we're in a recession in short order.  I don't' know the gov'ts going to want to do that.

This'll be an issue for Carney

Yep, lots of people are beaten up about immigration right now but like the guy in the article said, we need immigration to support our aging population and sustain our economy. Timing isn't good for those newcomers and a lot of other people but we need them.

The problem is we can't afford them until we make some major changes. We absolutely cannot bring in more people than we have new housing for, we can't bring in more people than we have new medical services for, etc.

So whether we need them or not we can't have them in the short term until we fix some of our major problems

We may need them but at what cost to the country, we have failed to keep up with our immigration numbers on our  Infra structure  of all types, we won't need them if we can't fix those problems first....and right now i don't think we can do both...

Evidently, you didn't read this before, so I'll provide it again.

There has been essentially no revision of the terms of the senior promise since it was established 50-60 years ago, and the result is that the only way it can be fulfilled is if each generation is significantly higher – not just the same size – as the generation preceding it. R&M showed that required an increase in population by 4.25 times over fifty years. But that more than quadrupling would have to continue every fifty years – by 2117, Canada’s population would need to be in the neighbourhood of 665 million

https://donwright.substack.com/p/the-bogus-idea-that-will-not-die

In 2006, the C.D. Howe Institute published a study called “No elixir of youth: immigration cannot keep Canada young.” It concluded that immigration could do little to alleviate the likely consequences of aging on Canada’s age structure and government finances. In order to maintain the current dependency ratio, Canada would have to vastly increase immigration and by 2050 would be taking in 7 million immigrants per year and our population would be 65 million.

Where are you planning on getting the workers you need to catch up with building infrastructure of all types?

By forcing tent city refugees rehabilitated opioid adducts and welfare queens into workfare?

Right now youth unemployment is at an all time high....why not entice these people into the trades schools with some incentives...I know it is a wild idea...to wild for the left...

I know you lefties have a soft spot for drugies and welfare queens...But ya what would be wrong with putting welfare queens to work for their benefits...or giving those living in tent city a job....and the addicts force them into treatment..

They have a program here in Fredericton where donors donate money so trades can build tiny homes, on provincial land, their community has guide lines, you get a tiny home free of charge, but you have to contribute to the community, like mowing the grass, keeping the community clean, keeping drugies and criminals away, or work at several of the communities shops or services...It alone is not going to solve our homeless situation , but well over 100 people now own their own homes, and off the street and most are drug free now....to get your own home you have to get on a drug program...

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Nothing. I just think you're dreaming if you think they can build infrastructure of any type.

What treatment? You need infrastructure for that.

Yeah they got that here too. It's great.

It'll take years of rehab, training and force to glean a workforce capable of building housing, pipelines, factories, energy corridors, ferries, power stations...as you say, infrastructure of all types. I guess we just put things on hold till then.

Evidently I didn't... but did look at a few lines and said 'whatever'.  It's simple math. We're an aging population with a quarter of our workforce over 55 y/o and retiring. We're also having smaller families meaning less future contributors to our economy. That's not sustainable and why we need immigration.

Let me translate what you just wrote as I read it.

Fairly accurate...  Not disagreeing you, just whomever wrote their opinions.  It's simple mathematical economics, we need immigration to support our economy.

I'm not at all disagreeing that we let too many immigrants in over the last few years, but that doesn't change the facts that they are needed for the economy.  How many we accept going forward is another story all together.

So, it takes years to accomplish just this one project...and in those years you've taken welfare queens off the federal pay role, we have taken drugies and put them into rehab, freeing up federal tax dollars for other things....imagine if we put those federal tax dollars back into the program built more tiny homes enlarged their communities....But you gave it all up before it got started....

I'm all for this project, I just don't think it'll yield very many of the sort of workers we need that you seem to think it will. And don't forget in many many cases we need these workers right now, not years from now.

Like i said we have a record youth unemployment...You seem to forget that this is an issue that the liberals have a solution to....don't like the liberals solution vote for someone else....What is the NDP solution, oh wait....what NDP... what about the green solution  same wind bag does not have a viable plan....so right now there is two options...pick one

The economists pointed out that trying to use immigrants to deal with an aging population is a ponzi scheme with no hope of success.

We need to allow our population to decline to the point where housing is cheap, workers become valuable, and cities are less crowded. Then people will start having more kids.

Of course, the kind of immigrants we want are the skilled immigrants, the entrepreneurs who will start businesses here.

I don't understand why we don't bring more of THOSE over.

Gee,  I wonder why.

Immigration is a ponzi scheme?  I'll assume these same two economists are either using some sort of twisted economic equations, looking for notoriety, or are just incompetent.

We're an aging population that is exiting the workforce in larger numbers and we're having less child births than is what considered the median replacement fertility rate.  In what world of economics would that suggest we will not have lesser people in the workplace and economy?  I'm not an economist though but easy to find the large majority agree that it's needed to support our population, fill needed skilled and non-skilled labor positions, and contribute to growing the economy.

We don't need to see our population and economy decline. We need to get to the root of our issues and find solutions to improve them.

Careful what you wish for.

You're ignoring an important ethical issue here with ramifications that could cause even more people trying to get here.

High-grading and skimming other populations for their best and brightest robs those societies of the very sort of people it takes to uplift them. Without this these societies become even less desirable places for people to stay.

Hence...more economic refugees trying to come here.

No need to explain what's going on, I get it.  The solution though isn't to shrink our population and by extension, our economy. The solution is to get at the root issues of the problems we have with housing, healthcare, infrastructure, etc and improve them....which is why Carney was elected.  Like it or not Immigration is needed to sustain our economy. The levels set I'm sure will be debated but it's not stopping.
