Day One is a Disaster for Carney - agrees to and then backs out of french debate, mistakes his own riding, several other gaffes

It's not been a good first day on the job for Carney. 

He started off screwing up where his riding is:

Carney says he knows new riding well, flubs neighbourhood name-drop | National Post

And then went on to accept pp's debate invitation to a french language debate.... only to reverse that and back out later

This after he acted 'macho' when he accepted it earlier. 

This guy is losing quebec already and has already looked like an !diot in his own 'riding'.

I thought it might take until day 2 before he shot himself in the foot but obviously i was just being a pessimist

The Libs kicked out Chandra Arya for Carney. Some on this board would call that racist, imagine the outcry if Poilievre had done that.

Well and one of their reasons was he refused to speak french. And what have they got?

He will lose Quebec at this rate. And when he loses Quebec the same thing's going to happen to him that happened to tom malcare, his numbers will droop and everybody is going to abandon him

He is not debating Poilievre on a face to face TVA debate. This isn't about the all candidates French debate.

The removal of Arya seems a bit of an own goal. Normally a sacrificial lamb is rewarded for making a sacrifice like this or is going anyway.

This plus his rejection as a leadership candidate is very curious. He is a very controversial character among the Indian community. Just that or about something that happened we don't already know about?

The leaders of the main federal political parties will be invited to face off in mid-April — if they meet certain criteria, announced the Leaders' Debates Commission Monday.

The commission, a government agency created in 2018 to organize federal leaders' debates, said the French debate will take place April 16 at 8 p.m. ET and the English debate will be held April 17 at 7 p.m. ET.

Both events will be hosted at the Maison de Radio-Canada in Montreal.

As the article said, he's refused the debate which has now become tradition in french on the most popular french tv show. 

It's not complex. I know he's not very good at french, how's your english?

 

All the other leaders agreed to it and he's refused. Quebec will see this as a major snub. Especially as he agreed to it earlier in the day.

Arya has been accused of anti-Sikh rhetoric and anti-French statements and it has been whispered that he is one of the MPs suspected of being under foreign influence, in his case from the Indian government.

CBC may forgive him, but Quebecers will not. He's already an anglophone from Western Canada who holds a British passport...

Yves Blanchet could stand to gain quite a few seats off of that gaffe alone.

Carney may be stepping on rakes even faster than Kamala did.

They also weren't happy with him visiting India and meeting with Modi on his own. The guy has a history of being a loose cannon.

Is that what you really have to do to make yourself feel better? You couldn't just come out and say it you had to be cryptic about it in the first place?

Jezuz kid  - nobody in our history has turned down a french language debate.  Everyone else has agreed to it, he agreed to it, then he backed out.  Quebec will see that as a major slap in the face. Watch his polling numbers over the next week. 

And find something else to try to be right about other than grammar for gods' sake.

I think it is misleading to insinuate he won't debate in French but obviously he is uncomfortable with the TVA format given his limited French. People with make of it what they will.

There's no doubt it'll hurt him. And if they're smart pp and jaggers will capitalize on it.   "We had no problem but i guess carney didn't think quebec was worth 70,000 dollars."  "if he flip flops on a promise to debate running the country, what will he do if he actually runs the country?" i mean the jabs pretty much write themselves  

It wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't agreed to it earlier.

That might have flown if he hadn't been all " why not yes yes" earlier. If he just said "look, short campaign, we're not doing any extra debates i'll go talk to the people directly' it would have been no big deal.  But he handled it very very badly and quebec will see it as a snub.
