Ever since he kicked off his 2015 campaign, Trump has run every play from the Hitler political playbook, from scapegoating immigrants to threatening to lock up his opponents and proclaiming himself a savior for the people. Yet, in 2016 there were many Trump apologists proclaiming that his rhetoric was not deeply felt or as extreme as it sounded, but rather a cynical appeal to capture the votes of deplorables, and that as President, Trump would be much more moderate than candidate Trump. This Vox article was written to remind the world that apologists for Hitler once told the same tale, and the world went to war because people didn't believe he was who he said he was. A lesson and reminder we still need, apparently.
