The Ruin That a Trump Presidency Would Mean

Quote

In 2016, Republicans could profess some uncertainty about the kind of president Donald Trump would be. Maybe the office would change the man? Maybe the party elite could bend Trump to its will?

But in 2024, there’s no uncertainty. Trump’s party is signing up for the ride, knowing exactly what the ride is. Pro-Ukraine senators are working to elect a president who will cut off Ukraine, knowing that he will cut off Ukraine. Pro-NATO senators are working to elect a president who will wreck NATO, knowing that he will wreck NATO.

Many top Republicans have been hoping for a way out of their Trump dilemma. That’s why Nikki Haley has raised tens of millions of dollars and Ron DeSantis has raised hundreds of millions. It’s why, even now, more than half of the Republican senators have not endorsed a primary candidate. And that’s why so many conservatives get twitchy when told that the 2024 presidential race is already a binary choice between Trump and Joe Biden. It’s also why the lopsided nomination contest will continue its fictional progress for some while longer.

But the exits are blocked. The many criminal and civil legal processes against Trump were too slow to rescue his party from him. The thesis that Trump might be disqualified under the Fourteenth Amendment awaits a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Republican contest will be over within weeks.

That heralds potential disaster for American allies, for the United States’ standing in the world, and above all for the invaded democracy of Ukraine.

There would be NO RECOVERY from Trump v2.0 🤮

The Greatest Threat Posed by Trump

Quote

I dread the division and conflict of a second Trump term, and I don’t minimize the possibility of Trump doing permanent political damage to the Republic. But the problem I’m most concerned about isn’t the political melee; it’s the ongoing cultural transformation of red America, a transformation that a second Trump term could well render unstoppable.

To put the matter as simply as possible: Eight years of bitter experience have taught us that supporting Trump degrades the character of his core supporters. There are still millions of reluctant Trump voters, people who’ve retained their kindness, integrity and good sense even as they cast a ballot for the past and almost certainly future G.O.P. nominee. I have friends and family members who vote for Trump, and I love them dearly. But the most enduring legacy of a second Trump term could well be the conviction on the part of millions of Americans that Trumpism isn’t just a temporary political expediency, but the model for Republican political success and — still worse — the way that God wants Christian believers to practice politics.

Absent public virtue, a republic can fall. And a Trump win in 2024 would absolutely convince countless Americans that virtue is for suckers, and vice is the key to victory. If Trump loses a second time, there is a chance he’ll end up a painful aberration in American politics, a depressing footnote in our national story. But if he wins again, the equation will change and history may record that he was not the culmination of a short-lived reactionary moment, but rather the harbinger of a greater darkness to come.

Robowoke's brain? Or his wee wee?  Tho i suppose two things can be true....

I have to say this democrat angle of "HE'LL TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS AND BE AUTHORTARIAN" while at the same time trying to inappropriately remove him from the ballot so people don't get to choose AND weaponize the courts to attack him and hurt his presidential run is pretty amusing.

Trump IS the vaccine people are choosing to protect themselves from autocracy.

The Economist had an analysis on their podcast.

Nobody really covers his policy proposals, which is a sign of the media rot.  But The Economist says he's promising 10% tariffs on all imports, and the immediate deportation of millions.

What would the impact be?  Doesn't matter.  He doesn't ask questions, because he's the expert.

Funny...but I actually mean his endless fear mongering displays. It doesn't work anymore. Nobody but those who sold out to these hoaky accusations from the very beginning. They have too much invested now, to admit the obvious truth.

But ya...brain and wee wee probably too...lol...

Here's the problem.  Fire alarms work because they are a sudden unexpected noise that startles people into action.  But - if you leave the fire alarm running all day and nite then eventually people learn to tune it out.  At that point another fire alarm isn't going to be noticed

The dems and supporters have been saying the world is about to end because trump non stop as loudly as they can since the day he got elected.  Remember when it was "my god, he's got the nuclear codes!!!" :)

So now nobody is listening. If anything they're actually making things worse for themselves because when people tune out the noise they start to look at track records and that's not what the dems wanted.

If the dems were smart they'd have held their fire on the whole 'orange man bad' routine for now, and they'd have had like one or two court cases.  6000 court cases including a jaywalking ticket from 1967 and daily claims that hes' trying to take over the country and he'll be a hitler and he grinds babies bones for his bread etc has now made the US tone deaf to it and they're like 'yeah yeah - so you say you can bring jobs back?"

I assume David Frum is still a staunch Republican but I wonder if he ever cries himself to sleep? He has a sad air of regret about him.

You can really see beads of sweat starting to form on the faces of these poor libtards. The Trump energizer bunny didn't die like they hoped. In fact, they only made him stronger by trying to cancel him, and boy, how they tried. In fact all that trying and lying is what really pissed people off. I predict popcorn shortages in Canada once again.

And that soon, very soon, Don the Bogeyman will come out of the closet... again!

Your popcorn comment indicates you get the entertainment factor but I think you fail to appreciate an underlying current of vindication amongst people who've known for sometime now that Trump is just a symptom of America's decline not it's cause - that's definitely taken a dedicated collective effort that's been decades long.

In any case there's no shortage of popcorn here and a few years ago Mom sent us a 4 month supply of Survival Food and enough Seeds from 4Patriots to see us through the Apocalypse.  4Patriots...now THAT'S ironic!

"Here at 4Patriots, we’re proud of our purpose, our products and our people. We’re grateful to our customers and thrilled that we have been able to impact the lives of so many people. And we’re excited about what the future holds."

...And we’re excited about what the future holds... Bwhahahahaha!

It depends if they see him as entertainment or a crisis.  Either way good idea to stock up on popcorn and toilet paper now.

And the fact that liberals hate Trump seems to be a huge selling point for his supporters. Not his policies, they barely get mentioned as I noted.

I feel that the US created such a stable and prosperous society that, eventually, the need for mass entertainments provoked the big party establishments into using making politics more and more like a show.

64 years on, people seem to take it for granted that social, economic, trade, and defense policy does not need serious attention. Serious attention. The powers that be willed to a greater or lesser extent take care of things.

I wish people would stop making this into pro wrestling, and start talking about serious problems.

Like the border...which Trump closed and Biden opened?

Like wars...which Trump did not have and Biden does? Oh...along with a surrender to terrorists?

Like the economy...which Trump had cooking and Biden destroyed?

You mean like that?

On the Contrary....these around here in the Southwestern USA who used to be so pro Trump the dye in their red hats leaked into their hair, lately "don't want to talk about it" , instead they shift the conversation to talk about the Border crisis, homeless veterans, the Budget, anything to avoid verbally bashing Trump while silently conveying doubts by body language.  FOX News used to be on every wide screen tv we have here (43 in 70 buildings) , now you rarely see it, it's been replaced by the Game Show Network ...and no one bothers to change the channel.  The Red Apathy is encased in the sludge of disillusionment with Trump, they flock to Nikki Haley . She's the only breath of clean air in the GOP candidacy.
