As history shows, after a degradation of this magnitude it's virtually impossible to come back to the state of integrity and principle. Quite possibly, we are observing the final phase of GOP as a democratic community. I'm not sure it can be saved from itself at this point in its trajectory.

As history shows very clearly, when authoritarianism rises, standing up to it firmly, on the principles of democracy and Constitution is the only way. It will corrode and take over tacitly, through coercion, intimidation, forcing out and removal of opponents, one by one, until no one left to stand. This is how it happened before and it will happen again, if people of reason and conscience wouldn't or couldn't stand up to it. Nothing is guaranteed in the evolution.
