The slaves who were freed most likely used their skills for employment. 

Well, like the article says, they did gain useful skills despite their being enslaved. 

Slaves were taught a trade so thousands of soldiers could die giving them the opportunity to use it. It's a weird world your mind occupies.

Normal people understand that in spite of the gross evils of slavery, slaves DID learn skills that they could use after they were freed.
