Posting Videos

Recommended Posts

While I don't care for videos in discussion threads, I think that embedded videos are appropriate in entertainment-oriented threads, like the "what are you listening to?" thread for example.

I would suggest that maybe the "Off-Topic" forums, or at least the "Arts and Culture" forum, continue to allow imbedded videos.

I never noticed that at all....

It was better when they were embedded, imo.

I agree. This place isn't supposed to look like a newspaper letters column, it's an internet forum, with the given internet media available. I personally have never had a problem on any political forum with people posting videos or images. They take up a bit of space, but hey it's a nice visual breakup and that bit of extra space isn't hurting anything. I don't quite understand the distaste for vids and images here.

Moderating is a tough job, and it can be easy to become either too heavy-handed on some rules and too lax on others.. Charles and Michael, just for constructive feedback, I appreciate your effort but IMO the last several months I've noticed you guys overly micro-managing the forums on minor issues like not enough content in posts, thread drift, and now videos. Editing quoted responses that are very long (especially for OP's) I can understand...but honestly if they were untouched things would still function fine here. As long as people are acting mostly civil and good discussions are happening here while adding and retaining new members so MLW can continue those good discussions, i think that's what matters far more than anything. PM's from mods about minor issues we have to edit is more bothersome IMO than clicking an arrow because some pages having only 2 or 3 posts on them. Just my 2 cents.

Some folks post videos gratuituously turning the forum into the cartoon section of the newspaper.

We are creating a balance.

That is not creating a balance. Videos are an important part of our modern internet culture and is one of the best ways to get a point across. I'll continue to embed videos and use them in the threads. I suggest others to continue to do the same.

Actually I believe that embedded videos on this forum is essential at times to get points across. And I would suggest that either all videos are accepted or none of them are.

So what is prompting this change? What are the reasons behind it? Clutter or something else?

Mods are just reversing the larger policy decision to permit images/videos to be posted here in general....were warned of the risks/opportunities...

Close.

We permit cartoon-clutter in fun threads --- i.e., Sports, Beer, Rock and or Roll.

We demand text-links in the non-fun threads.

and resulting workload.

The workload has nothing to do with it.

This is to control quality.

You are not understanding the opening post. Videos are not being rejected.

SHORT VERSION: Text-Link to video = GOOD

I can see their point, especially when people who reply to the post don't delete the embedded video from their reply. It clutters up the thread.

And I agree totally with the pictures... that gets abused when people start posting "military-porn" to derail a thread. That was a common problem.

There is a lot of other trolling clutter that can be removed from the site before we even get to the videos. But whatever.

Again I appreciate your guy's effort, I really do, but IMO again it seems like unneeded micro-managing. I don't think there's a clutter problem on MLW. Massive images, yeah I can see an issue. Political forums also don't need to visually look like a colourless text-only novel or scholarly journal article to have serious discussions. Internet forums are a multi-media format all to their own Just relax a bit fellas, you're making your job (and ours) harder than it needs to be, and you're doing a good job otherwise.

I'm not trying to be a nuisance, I care about the quality of these forums as much as you guys do. This kind of thing, demanding compliance over very minor issues, is something that 1) in the end makes the forums less enjoyable, not more, and 2) because of that, will give less dedicated posters less reason to post here, which concerns me given we don't get a lot of new posters who stay.

Mods create the forum they want and it seems that the present Mods don't want much.

I think what we want to avoid is a situation where people post videos or meme images in place of actually contributing their own thoughts.

I think that what we would like is that if somebody read the your post with embedded media disabled they would still be able to understand the gist of your post.

I think that *referencing* a video is fine. "The Daily Show had a segment on this last night that hit the nail on the head (link)" or "As this video shows, this is becoming a serious problem in some places (link)". It should be supporting information for a point you're trying to make. It shouldn't be your entire message, and you should post a video as a replacement for articulating ideas of your own.

I don't think there's a clutter problem on MLW.

Neither do we. We are proud of how we keep it under control. People are starting to get the picture.

You can not script this!

The good news is that image/video was never posted.

What difference, at this point, does it make??

There is a lot of other trolling clutter that can be removed from the site before we even get to the videos. But whatever.

There is a Report button in the bottom right of every post. But you knew that already.
