The Sheepdogs. Man. I really want to like that album, but there's just something that keeps me from really getting into it. In a time where The Black Keys are popular, The Sheepdogs mimicked instead of taking inspiration from earlier sounds. I give them credit for taking that risk to reignite a sound from a generation ago, but man. I dunno. It's just been done.

Death From Above 1979 is a great addition too, also Broken Social Scene. Though here we get into a particular kind of music that we're favouring, which is part of the reason I mention The Weeknd. He single-handedly got me into R&B when I never previously enjoyed it. We can't be filling the whole list with Metric, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Arcade Fire, Stars (who haven't been mentioned yet) and the likes, though that's a great start for Canada's best indie bands. :)

Here's The Weeknd for anyone interested. Explicit lyrics ahead. He's quite possibly one of the best R&B artists ever and hardly anyone has heard of him. Canadian too.

That's pretty good actually. I heard of The Weeknd but never took the time to check it out. I just had to put the Sheepdogs in, saw them last summer and was actually really impressed with them live. The album without a doubt has a Black Keys jive but I think that just goes along with the sleeze rock revival that is happening right now. Check out Monster Truck, I've seen them twice in the past year and both times were great. Their album is good but it does not do their live show justice in any way.

I'm definitely biased in my opinion, I've always been into the metal, punk and indie music of Canada. I've actually toured the country and parts of the US back in the day and played with some pretty amazing Canadian bands, some that have never even released any significant material. From small town bars all way to big time summer festivals and world wide tours, this country has some amazing music to offer and that's something we can all be proud of regardless of our political leanings.

I've always held the notion that the best music isn't always the stuff that sells the most or bieber and drake would be topping all the lists here, which we all know is just ridiculous!

If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

I re-read my post and I didn't explain clearly what I was trying to say. I think The Black Keys innovated on a sound that The Sheepdogs simply mimicked, as opposed to The Sheepdogs mimicking The Black Keys. The Sheepdogs are a new band with a classic rock sound that's been done to death before. The only thing that makes them unique, imo, is that they're an anachronism amongst acts like The Black Keys who've innovated the sound for a modern time. That's just my opinion. I love the sound, but I find their music uninspiring and unoriginal. Maybe I'm being overly harsh on them. I give them all the credit in the world for taking the risk of running with that sound though. Edited by cybercoma

Rush - Clockwork Angels

I have no idea how well it sold, but, imo, it's their best album in a long time. As an entire body of work, it's fantastic.

I was going to say 2112 by Rush. Their early work is stellar, and you cannot mention Canadian music without mentioning them.

I liked your suggestion of Our Lady Peace. Naveed probably?
I Mother Earth is still one of my all time favourite bands, just saw them for the fourth time a few weekends ago. Personal favourite though is Dig.

Some newer stuff also? City and Colour?

I think lists like this are usually messed up by design. It's click bait. You're supposed to disagree with them so that you'll share the link and have discussions about it.

You can tell I'm getting old, the first 5 alternatives that popped into my head turned out to be a lot more than 25 years old!

Rush, Billy Talent, Our Lady Peace. All three have albums that are better than some on that list.

This would likely be at the top of my all-time list. Neil Young Harvest is on that Top 10 too, but I think the OP was past 25 years.

I was going to add Live Rust, but that's what. 35 years ago?

Saw him a few years ago for the first time and wasn't disappointed.

Saying that, I am disappointed in his Monasanto diatribe. I don't believe he has researched the issue very well.

The "last 25 years" thing rules out some of these suggestions. Like 2112 is pretty cool, but it was 40 years ago. I'm not sure Bryan Adams has put out anything all that great in the past 25 years either...

I think Jagged Little Pill is a great suggestion... by strange coincidence it was in the news recently for 2 reasons. First, it's the 20th anniversary of the record's release, and second, it just sold its 15 millionth copy.

I would suggest that maybe Sarah McLachlin "Surfacing" merits consideration for the list.

Neil Young released "Harvest Moon" in 1992, it might be his last good record...

High on my personal favorite Canadian albums of the past 25 years are:

"Synthetica" by Metric,

"Coyote" by Matt Mays, and

"Fuzz" by Junkhouse.

Live It Out is a really good album and what allowed them to breakout, but Synthetica is better. Junkhouse? Well played.

My vote goes to "Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians"!

Bleach! I'm just glad they finally disappeared.....thanks for reminding me!

I would not throw that in the top 100.

And why is there no Rush on that list??

Rush has made so much music over their long career, they are an essential for any Canadian music list.

Even though I was mostly a prog rock fan in the 70's, I couldn't stand Rush's 2112. A friend of mine used to drive me nuts playing that goddawful album. Surprising that I didn't care for most prog rock bands ventures into pop music territory....YES's 90210 was okay, Genesis made me throw up when Phil Collins started taking over...especially Abacab! But Rush didn't get my interest until Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

I used to think Signals was their best work, but haven't listened in awhile. But, when they moved further and further into synthland and away from guitar music in the mid or late 80's, I started losing interest again. In recent years they turned out a good record a few years ago (Snakes&Arrows) but their latest one made me start thinking again that rockers in their 60's should wait until they have something really worthwhile to distribute and tour with.

That's OK....Celine and Shania (Alanis too) mopped the floor with those other acts when it comes to record sales and touring revenue.

They cried all the way to the bank.

Sacrilege!!!

2112 was my first Rush tour, and the two other albums you mention were two other tours I saw of theirs...Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. Moving Pics was incredible! Well, they all were.

I hated 90210, but saw them play at Exhibition Place for that tour. Chris Squire's bass solo stood out from that show. RIP Chris.

Genesis is another band I saw too late. Phil Collins is an incredible drummer, but damn I hated him fronting Genesis. Saw the Mama tour. Like I said, much too late.Gabriel live is still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Tool and the Mars Volta are two newer prog bands I can't stop listening too, even though TMV are now defucnt.

I didn't ever understand the attraction to Rush...but hey people like them. Still, have they produced a top 10 album sometime in the last 25 years?
