Our population density is less than a tenth that of the US and we are just as far flung.

Most of our territory is empty or nearly empty. Most of us are concentrated in a few cities, most of them near the US border.

Wouldn't you agree though, that servicing Northern Ontario, for example, very much takes away from funding that's needed in denser urban areas? Flying helicopters and planes and sending road ambulances on transfers that can last more than a day can be very expensive. Add to that small underutilizes facilities being kept open and we're talking real money. Most other countries don't have those problems to the same degree.

Maybe, but I would say 90% of our health care facilities are in reasonably large urban centers. I doubt the percentage we spend on smaller centers is all that high in a proportionate basis.

Most of us yes, but there are a lot who scattered over vast distances which have to moved to those larger centers to get the treatet not avaiable i their own community. Thats why we spend so much on air as well as road ambulance service across the country.

You do have options Argus, you can go see another specialist and you can access the UCC or walk in clinic who may provide a better sounding board and referral.

If you can get your doctor to refer you to another specialist, then yes, you can then go on a waiting list to see another specialist - a long waiting list, most likely.

I've noticed over the years that most of the doctors who are in clinics are younger, and they tend to lack the connections older doctors do which might get you in to see the better specialists in any kind of timely fashion. But that is another option.

The point I'm making is that our health care does not exactly give you on-demand service. You can't just pick out a specialist and choose to go see them. You can't pick out a GP and go see them either. The Canadian system, as it currently exists, offers less choice than the higher categories of US insurance. Mind you, the choice available in the US is overhyped. If you belong to an HMO then you go to the doctors/hospitals they have signed up or do without.

We don't really spend that much, at least based on my observation. Our rescue, ambulance and paramedic services are not as good as they are in other countries, and certainly not as good as they seem to be in the US. Average response times for police, fire and ambulance appear to be higher here than in the US.

Exactly, because of the distances often needed to be covered. And that air ambulance system you reckon is so good in the US: a friend used to fly for one of them and on scene calls, they would pick a patient up at car accident, and fly over a perfectly capable facility to get to the facility that owned the aircraft so they could begin charging the patients plan, assuming they had one. They have now outlawed that, but it would never have happened in our system in the first place. No profit motive.

Also, unlike most politics in Canada... U.S. elections are epic scaled battles... years in the making... billions in the financing... pure Hollywood. What would we do without them ?

Agreed...the Americans even make TV shows about campaigns and political office...and Canadians watch them...amazing !

So Ted Cruz is going to make it official tomorrow. Good for him. He'll make sure we have lots of entertainment. He's announcing his candidacy at Liberty University, which is one of those schools where the geology department teaches that the earth is 6000 years old.

Rick Perry is also very likely to run, so it seems likely that Perry and Cruz will be in a dogfight for both Tea Party supporters and for Texas donor money.

Ted Cruz is the only guy I can think of who could make Rick Perry seem like a thoughtful, reasonable candidate.

Dwayne Johnson always belonged to the US; Canada just borrowed him for a couple of years.

As for Cruz, you can keep him. No backsies! I wonder how many tin-foil hat birther types will be demanding to see his birth certificate?

Nothing, but it is another chance for some Canadians to feed their "free health care" neurosis.

No, it's the American political future. With Obamacare, you Americans will now "enjoy" healthcare dominating the political landscape. Obama has moved the goal posts further to the left, and health policies will reckon in this next 2016 cycle.

When will Ted Cruz publish his birth certificate? That's what I want to know.
