And it has been reported, and I'm sure it will be taken care of as Shady forgot that at MLW we have to make our insults more indirect, and resort to snide, snotty language instead of directly telling people what we think of them.

You've got it down to a science!

I didn't suggest you did.........Patti Davis was as bad as Elton John, despite her parents positions on drug use.

My bad then sorry.

Thats exactly the kind of twisting of my words that happened on the thread I thought that's what you were doing too.

Yep, he does and his abilities were an inspiration for my revival of the Nancy Reagan is dead thread.

I missed this the first time so thanks for bringing it to our attention dialamah.

Face palm here Kimmy.

I am amazed at the number of people who are commenting on "Dumpf" without even knowing the hilarious origins of it.

Of course, there is a certain amount of hypocrisy here as I too shoot from the hip for no good reason. But really?

You have made some pretty substantive comments out of ignorance over this issue and if you were not a forum facilitator perhaps you would deserve a pass like the rest of us.

But man, just a face palm....

What facepalm? Nothing Dialamah mentioned disputes what I've written by one iota.

Having now watched the clip, I can assure you that it Oliver was not responding to comments Trump made about Stewart in 2013. Oliver's goal, and Oliver himself is very up front about this-- is to create a meme to ridicule Trump. (John Oliver himself explains it much better than I could, so I encourage you to watch the clip-- it's very funny.)

And I again have to marvel at the extraordinary hypocrisy of this meme being propagated throughout the internet by the same kind of well-meaning progressives who'd go into a tizzy of indignation if they heard someone refer to Caitlyn Jenner as "Bruce".

I have watched it many days ago and I would hardly call 20 minutes a clip so not sure what you have seen.

By that measure, I trust the latest thread will be locked?

I don't agree with Shady's outburst, but I can understand it........I could almost fathom the rudeness in the Thatcher thread several years ago........but Nancy Reagan? Patti Reagan didn't agree with her parents either, but I assume with both their passing she was able muster as measure of respect(and maturity).......despite Nancy Reagan's parenting skills (or lack there of) and refusal to teach her daughter how to freebase cocaine.......

Thanks to Bubber Miley's suggestion here we can revisit the Ted Kennedy obituary thread to examine this notion that people ought not to be spoken ill of after they die.

Spoiler: people don't mind speaking ill of the dead when it's somebody they don't like.

I watched the full 22 minutes as well. And if you fast-forward to final 2-3 minutes you can watch Oliver explain in his own words that he's trying to start a meme to ridicule Trump.

Any other response? Any comment on whether you think it would be reasonable to address Mohammad Ali as "Cassius"?

So forum rules on polite discussion can be put aside if its someone the poster didn't like? More so, if in past threads, team "x" insulted a favorite of team "y"? Like Professional Wrestling.........but for "adults"..

No. Look back at the previous thread and note that people were discussing Ted Kennedy warts and all, without people having a tantrum and crying that it's mean to speak ill of the dead.

And note that more than one of the people taking dumps on Ted Kennedy's grave were among those offended by BC-Chick calling "Just Say No" a joke. Note that the guy who went apeshit today because people were "disrespecting someone who just died" was the guy who took the biggest crap of all on Ted Kennedy's grave.

The point of this is to point out that a man who thinks his name is worth $3 billion is a hypocrite (re: Jon Stewart) and to mock that name for other reasons (to uncouple it from the associated success).

You know, sort of what those who use Jnr for Trudeau are trying to do.....

I have to point out that nobody insulted Nancy Reagan in that thread. They insulted her policies. And until Shady showed up and threw a tantrum, people were discussing it in those terms.

Ha, just wait till Dubya croaks. With 3/4 of the planet either ululating or singing ding dong the dingbat's dead, the usual suspects will be blowing fuses before the hour is out.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,

No. Look back at the previous thread and note that people were discussing Ted Kennedy warts and all, without people having a tantrum and crying that it's mean to speak ill of the dead.

If its a no, why would I look back at a thread several years before I joined?

To clarify, that was a "no" as in "no" don't insult dead people even if you didn't like them...........not a "no" as in "yes" you can if you find a post from a member of the other team doing the like from years previous to justify breaking forum rules encompassing polite discourse?

What Trump said about Stewart makes him a hypocrite, because sometime in either the 1600s or 1800s depending on your source, Trump's ancestors also changed their name? I'm not sure that adds up. Trump's definitely a hypocrite, if not about this then about other things. He's all over the map, and he doesn't seem to care or even notice. There's lots of worse things that can be said about him too. But "Drumpf" isn't a legitimate or accurate name for Trump.

As for the Trudeau Jr stuff, I've change my view... I do think juvenile people are using it deliberately to get a rise out of people who are easily offended. I no longer believe that people are using it in good faith, and I wish they would stop doing it. However, I also wish people would grow up and stop getting riled up over such triviality.

The point is that people were able to discuss a guy who just died, warts and all, without all the feigned outrage we saw today.

Discussing the flaws of the recently departed can still be done in "polite discourse".

This is a forum and we talk about all kinds of dead people and their policies.

Do you mean don't talk about them before their body is cold?

Don't talk about them badly ever???

Please clarify.

I don't know if Shady's outrage is feigned or not, but both attempts at the topic have turned into a shitshow.........the second one, I find more offensive then the one previous.....and from the start, there wasn't an attempt at an honest or polite discussion.

It was clearly a protest about the ludacris notion that you gotta elevate the deceased to sainthood now that they're dead.

I don't know that there would be a time limit on when the subject could take place, more so the manner it was to be discussed in.......The first topic, in all honesty, I didn't find bad or that offensive, the slight drift occurred like they do in any given topic........perhaps it shouldn't have happened in a topic over someone's death, but I can understand.......akin to a mass shooting thread drifting into gun control or mental illness for example.

After it was locked in response to it turning into a complete shitshow, in my opinion, it should have been left alone......with policies like "Just say No" etc being in their own topical thread. Shady should get a few days to cool off and the others involved in the back and forth a warning to avoid drift and trolling etc etc......

The second thread, by the OP's own admission and post, was an attempt to inflame those that thought highly of Nancy Reagan.......hence not an honest attempt to have a polite adult discussion, built upon any ill feelings members might have felt from the previous thread..........

A question for you........if invited to someones funeral, would you dump on the deceased in front of others, with full knowledge that you would insult those that might feel differently?

Posted

I don't know that anyone suggested sainthood.....

So now you're comparing a couple of people posting their not so fond childhood memories of a former First Lady on *a political message board* to speaking badly about someone at their funeral?

Not even close.

Yeah... it's pretty stupid...

And you didn't say anything badly about the person either... you criticized her policies!

Posted

I'm being rhetorical. I mean not sharing your negative views about someone's policies just because they're dead.

Not close.......too you. It is clearly subjective on what one would consider polite...........so a pass on the funeral question?
