You can express the opinion without offending people. Assuming you want to have a discussion, why not do that ?

As you stated, it's not my problem if you or anyone else is offended.

I think the issue is that some people believe that finding humour in something disrespects and trivializes it. That isn't necessarily the case.

Being offended by an opinion is your problem. If I make offensive jokes about a serious issue, then that's a problem I am making in our discussion. I don't follow the logic that "I'm serious about this topic, that's why I'm being ungentlemanly and trying to offend a good number of people who may take part in the discussion".

Sorry.

I'm confused? If it is against the rules to deliberately offend people here than why does this site allow troll postings which are clearly calculated to cause offense?

Ok, then why are people complaining about being offended by 9/11 theories ?

We're offended by seeing them and other accompanying crap inserted into every God damn topic, how about that?

You can't even read a topic on Game of Thrones without wading through crap about 9/11 and "terrorist Americans".

This site has always had an occasional nut case, but now it seems like the monkey house in the zoo at feeding time.

It's hard to find anyone to hold an intelligent conversation with without the monkeys screeching away and flinging excrement all over the place.

Point taken, please report off topic 9/11 posts.

The last time I said anything about it I believe your response was something to the effect that , well, people have their pet topics, after all.

I was given a "warming" after referring to Osama as some poster's "buddy." Yet a relatively new poster has managed to turn just about any thread about radical Islam, Judaism, or Israel into a personal debate. I would like to return to contribute more to the forum but something is wrong here.

I am one of the most benign posters here and feel like I'm a punching bag.

Manufactured outrage aside

Manufactured, eh? How could anybody possibly find it appalling that people would laugh and joke about raping someone? Grow up.

That isn't actually the joke. The joke is the strange and broad definition.

so I re-quoted an image I had posted... only the image and a 'one sentence' reference speaking to the image. And I did so to add context to the post I was replying to... and I did that because there was a time lag to my original post... and to add proper context. So: I'm advised by the moderator to stop re-quoting my own posts/images... that if i do it again the post will be deleted and I'll be suspended!

a suggested improvement to this board would be for board moderation to more broadly consider and accept attempts to provide greater clarity and context. I most certainly didn't post anything of significant length... I simply re-quoted a prior posted image. Clarity/context - what a concept!

Unbelievable, and yet I believe it.

I agree. The moderation here is getting out of hand. It really seems like their objective is to stop people from posting at all.

What improvement would I like to see in this forum? I'd like to see the moderators stop going out of their way to shut down organic conversation every time it happens. "Drift" is a normal conversation. When you keep trying to shut that down, you're just being an jerk. Reminding people of what your point was, and adding context, is part of having a productive conversation. When you try to shut that down, you're being ridiculous.

To the best of my knowledge, this board has been active for the last 13 years. That is longer than any other board on which I have participated.

Each board has its own standards. Because of the nature of opinion boards and the passion and emotions that are generated in such a medium, the participants are always testing the envelope of acceptable discourse. Some participants would like to see the parameters expanded while others are outraged at what is already allowed.

Don't like the rules - then move on.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

You're pretty new here, so your frame of reference is pretty limited. It was not always like this. There was much more participation, a lot more leeway with the conversation, and a lot less interference by the moderators.

I've been a member here since 2004. For ten years, I never got a single warning, in the last year I've had three. Never once was there an indication that I was operating outside the rules, now all of a sudden I supposedly am. My posting content and style has not changed in that time, but the moderation certainly has.

It WASN'T broke before, but now they are tryng to fix it. What they are doing is screwing it up.

The "don't like it, move on" part is the most contentious issue, because the membership here is a small fraction of what it was just a few years ago, and the moderation appears to be determined to get that number as close to zero as possible as fast as they can.

I do not pay enough attention to know what is going on with moderating, and I am not sure I particularly care, but I know that is it entirely possible to make a sub-form on a bulletin boards where the person who started the thread can moderate the thread themselves. Maybe that is what is really needed: an area with a moderation free for all. The wheat will be separated from the chaff, platitude platitude, blah blah blah. You get the point.

It's ridiculous that posts have been stopped on threads when we haven't even expressed and resolved our frustrations. Please let us post and resolve these issues.

I agree, in that thread, I can't fathom how you were off-topic......

A poster asked about posts being removed without explanation. I have done that in the past, usually because 1) it should be obvious to the poster that the post is a troll, ie. the poster just tried to slip it by and 2) I have too many threads/posts to go through to take the extra steps to cut/paste, compose a message and send it to the offender.

I'll try to do less of these in the future, though.

If at any time you have a question about a hidden post, feel free to PM me or Charles.

It should be obvious to the moderation who the trolls are, but in most cases they get a pass. The definition of trolling and the application of a ban is not consistent with that notion you speak of when obvious troll is obvious. I know many posters can chime in on this bit.

I don't know how many time we have to respond to this one. Nobody gets a 'pass', and we try to be as impartial as we can when deciding. There are specific examples of discussion which some people think are trolling but we don't think are.

I know many posters can chime in on this bit.

And a lot that can chime in on the opposite side, let's not pretend otherwise. If there were consensus on a troll then I would wager that Charles and I would agree with that consensus as well as most people on here are reasonable.

You know damn well that the definition of trolling is quite ambiguous here. So when you say that when we reply, it should be obvious to us that the post we are replying to is a troll post. However when we call it out as a troll post, the moderation may have a different view.

So wtf are we to do? I guess suck it up, I lost faith in the ability of moderation to be objective when someone reports a troll post. If it clearly is a troll post, deal with it, and we would not need to continually to have this conversation.

Thank you for this explanation....I find that deleting our posts out of the blue to be a new and interesting dimension to the entire MLW experience. Kind of like stepping on a land mine without the loss of any limbs. The enforcement of new or existing protocols (forum rule or not) also adds some new angles...for instance, I will begin to preface some assertions with "In my opinion" (IMO) whenever I suspect that another member or moderator will demand or expect a "cite" as proof/fact, even though it "proves" nothing.

Economics trumps Virtue.

Next time, just post a hyperlink to your previous post. Do NOT re-copy your post nor your image.

Up to a certain point, that is fine.

However, up to a different point "drift" is used as a tactic to de-rail threads.

When you keep trying to shut that down, you're just being an jerk. Reminding people of what your point was, and adding context, is part of having a productive conversation. When you try to shut that down, you're being ridiculous.

The rules and guidelines clearly instruct folks to stay on topic and to start a new thread when the topic drifts. Folks complain when that is not followed.

We can appreciate adding context to a post. However, when said context is presented with inflammatory language and personal attacks BEFORE the substance of the discussion is addressed, then the troll-o-meter starts clicking.

We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society.
