Jim Flaherty has called it a career in politics.

Who is the best next choice for Harper?

What (if any) legacy does Jim leave?

Legacy? Cutting corporate taxes (benefiting the rich), running deficits and inflating the housing market (again serving the rich investor class).

Best choice thereafter? As if it'll make a difference if Harper appoint him/her. It'll just be another rich-serving, deficit-running conservative.

Historically, that's what they do, nothing different about the next one I'm sure.

My view is Harper will either, let the Parl.Sec to Finance carry the ball until the next election and AID him in his decisions OR pick one who will follow his rules. Moore does have a degree in Business and the Natural Resource minister has experience on Wall street, but then who take over that ministry??

According to CBC, Joe Oliver will be named Minister of Finance.

Someone should tell Joe not to be labeling foreign investors as interfering terrorists as he was want to do when he was Nat. Resources minister. Might be a short stint.

And that finance minister will be Joe Oliver. You know, the guy who thinks people who are concerned about the environment are "foreign funded radicals" God only knows what BS he'll lend to his new portfolio. I'm sure he'll direct the CRA to put Greenpeace under a microscope.

Flaherty is one of the best financial ministers we've had. It was the opposition when a minority gov't who demanded they spend more and more

Whoever gets the job, they should raise a glass of Jameson’s to Whitby, Ont.’s most famous descendant of the ferocious O’Flaherty’s of Galway.

The new finance minister will inherit a budget on the brink of balance; the lowest business tax rates in the G7; a securities regulation regime that finally looks like it may consolidate; and a number of innovative and popular savings initiatives like the Tax Free Savings Account.

Mr. Flaherty put a distinctive mark on the way the tax system treats disabled people, and those that care for them — a personal cause driven by his own experience as the father of a son with developmental challenges.

But it was his role in the global financial crisis that was perhaps his finest hour

Canada's economy, from stateside, looks healthier than it did during the last three decades of the last century.

Your view doesn't make any sense. There will be a finance minister, there's no question about it.

I know that sometimes PM's hold two portfolios. Any chance Harper would serve as his own Minister of Finance.

Well he was forced to spend waaay to much by the opp and paid off the largest debt ever in record time while it took the liberals 11? yrs to pay off a smaller one in good times ?

Well look at the left run countries of the world , and you will see what incompetance has done to them. He will go down as one of the best, paid off the debt without gutting the military by 30%, gutting the UI fund and PS pension fund and gutted the transfer payments while at it, am I wrong???

What...are you talking about?

What...are you talking about?

How long did it take the liberal government to pay off the last one??? And how big was it when the liberals started paying it down?? How much was the deficit harper made during the melt down and how long did it take him to pay it down. Maybe you can answer those questions for me.

The difference between debt and deficit is confusing because they both involve big numbers and start with "d."

You need to learn the difference between

Debt

and

Deficit

And quite Frankly, the Conservative Record while in office is nothing to write home about considering it ran the highest defict in Canadian History, while at the same time , very successful in massaging their message of good fiscal governance.

and 2015 is not here yet.... lets see where we are at when the numbers roll in. It may be their first balanced budget, it may not..

In constant dollars, it was not the worst deficit ever. Also, in a global context, and looking at the situation, the Conservative record is very good.
