Big Guy Posted March 18, 2014 Report Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) Jim Flaherty has called it a career in politics. Who is the best next choice for Harper? What (if any) legacy does Jim leave? Edited March 18, 2014 by Big Guy Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
BC_chick Posted March 18, 2014 Report Posted March 18, 2014 Legacy? Cutting corporate taxes (benefiting the rich), running deficits and inflating the housing market (again serving the rich investor class). Best choice thereafter? As if it'll make a difference if Harper appoint him/her. It'll just be another rich-serving, deficit-running conservative. Historically, that's what they do, nothing different about the next one I'm sure. Quote It's kind of the worst thing that any humans could be doing at this time in human history. Smallc Posted March 18, 2014 Report Posted March 18, 2014 So...basically he continued Liberal policy. Quote
Topaz Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 My view is Harper will either, let the Parl.Sec to Finance carry the ball until the next election and AID him in his decisions OR pick one who will follow his rules. Moore does have a degree in Business and the Natural Resource minister has experience on Wall street, but then who take over that ministry?? Quote
Smallc Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Your view doesn't make any sense. There will be a finance minister, there's no question about it. Quote
Smallc Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 According to CBC, Joe Oliver will be named Minister of Finance. Quote
Bob Macadoo Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 According to CBC, Joe Oliver will be named Minister of Finance. Someone should tell Joe not to be labeling foreign investors as interfering terrorists as he was want to do when he was Nat. Resources minister. Might be a short stint. Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 And that finance minister will be Joe Oliver. You know, the guy who thinks people who are concerned about the environment are "foreign funded radicals" God only knows what BS he'll lend to his new portfolio. I'm sure he'll direct the CRA to put Greenpeace under a microscope. Quote
scribblet Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Flaherty is one of the best financial ministers we've had. It was the opposition when a minority gov't who demanded they spend more and more http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2014/03/18/john-ivison-jim-flaherty-leaves-his-successor-a-budget-thats-the-envy-of-the-g7/ Whoever gets the job, they should raise a glass of Jameson’s to Whitby, Ont.’s most famous descendant of the ferocious O’Flaherty’s of Galway. The new finance minister will inherit a budget on the brink of balance; the lowest business tax rates in the G7; a securities regulation regime that finally looks like it may consolidate; and a number of innovative and popular savings initiatives like the Tax Free Savings Account. Mr. Flaherty put a distinctive mark on the way the tax system treats disabled people, and those that care for them — a personal cause driven by his own experience as the father of a son with developmental challenges. But it was his role in the global financial crisis that was perhaps his finest hour Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province

PIK Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Well he was forced to spend waaay to much by the opp and paid off the largest debt ever in record time while it took the liberals 11? yrs to pay off a smaller one in good times ? He will go down as one of the best, paid off the debt without gutting the military by 30%, gutting the UI fund and PS pension fund and gutted the transfer payments while at it, am I wrong??? Topaz Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 So now, that Oliver is the Finance minister the guessing fame continues with...who's the new Minister of Natural resources? Who would want that job?? Ideas? Quote
Smallc Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Greg Rickford got that job....who wouldn't want it? Quote
PIK Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 What...are you talking about? How long did it take the liberal government to pay off the last one??? And how big was it when the liberals started paying it down?? How much was the deficit harper made during the melt down and how long did it take him to pay it down. Maybe you can answer those questions for me. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
Smallc Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Again what are you talking about? Canada never paid off its debt and isn't about to. It's over $600B. Quote
BubberMiley Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 The difference between debt and deficit is confusing because they both involve big numbers and start with "d." Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet
Shady Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Flaherty should take over as Ontario conservative leader. The liberals have destroyed this province. Quote
madmax Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 There is little doubt, he knows Hudak will lose the upcoming election and then run for the leadership of the PCs. Quote

You need to learn the difference between Debt and Deficit And quite Frankly, the Conservative Record while in office is nothing to write home about considering it ran the highest defict in Canadian History, while at the same time , very successful in massaging their message of good fiscal governance. and 2015 is not here yet.... lets see where we are at when the numbers roll in. It may be their first balanced budget, it may not.. Quote
Smallc Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 In constant dollars, it was not the worst deficit ever. Also, in a global context, and looking at the situation, the Conservative record is very good. Quote
