Spiderfish Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 With due respect Michael, should we not be trying to stay on topic? I mean, thread drift has been identified as a significant issue around here recently. Quote
jbg Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Are you saying that the temperature record reflects that ?Pretty darn close. Good urban records go back to 1869 in New York City (KNYC code) but farmers actually kept excellent records. The books about various historical events often make reference to contemporary conditions. Much of my reduced participation on the boards reflects my time reading of historical non-fiction. The weather conditions referenced in those books are remarkably similar to current conditions. For example Chernow's George Washington contained numerous temperature records in New York City and Philadelphia at the time of battles and when they were the U.S. capitals, and for his estate, Mount Vernon, for most of his life. Same old same old in terms of temperature and weather. And I just won't take the word of people about ice cap and glacier conditions in remote, uninhabited areas. Michael Hardner Posted March 3, 2014 Report Posted March 3, 2014 I apologize for getting sucked into the thread drift there, as I have a bunch of tabs with different threads open... and I didn't realize that this was the 'improvements' thread when I replied. I agree, I would just make a new forum category for it, and instruct posters to confine their posts to there. Same thing goes for CONFLICT: DIRTFARM (is/pal conflict). It should have its own categorie too. These two topics are famous internet-wide for generating extremely low quality debate, and it would be nice to put them in a place where they dont pollute every other thread. waldo Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 I agree, I would just make a new forum category for it, and instruct posters to confine their posts to there. absolutely! Let's round-up and/or isolate all those unsubstantiated and continually recycled (and refuted) claims of MLW fake-skeptics/deniers and confine them to a single forum. . Quote
Spiderfish Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) Their seems to be quite a bit of pent up passive aggression and antipathy from some people around here, and their lack of self-control and disregard for the forum rules is in no small way contributing to the degradation of quality within threads. Maybe a sandbox area could be added where members can go to throw insults and hurl accusations at each other without junking up the rest of the place. Edited March 4, 2014 by Spiderfish Quote
WestCoastRunner Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 Is it possible to have a thread where newbies can post a bit about themselves, say hello etc and in turn, members can respond and welcome them and give information about themselves if they so desire? WestCoastRunner Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 The reason I suggested the above is that at times, these forums seem so clinical and detached. When that happens, folks tend to lash out more at each other instead of treating members with respect. Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. Charles Anthony Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 The opinions expressed in the following post do not come from my status as a mod. The decision is ultimately Greg's to make. Feel free to discuss or offer a differing opinion on newbie introduction sections. I do not like newbie introduction sections for the reason that they make the forum too personable. Not everybody wants to be personable. Some people just want to discuss stuff openly and anonymously without being prejudged. The reason I suggested the above is that at times, these forums seem so clinical and detached. When that happens, folks tend to lash out more at each other instead of treating members with respect.I think your conclusion is wrong. I conclude the opposite. Here at MLW, anybody can join without having to introduce themselves. I see that as a good thing because it means that a new member is under NO OBLIGATION to offer personal information. They will not be prejudged if they do not want to be. They can be judged solely by the merit of their posts. Thus, if you want to know something about somebody here on the forum, your choices are limited to: 1) ask the person 2) read their blurb on their profile page or 3) read what they write. If you want to introduce yourself, write an introduction on your profile. That is sufficient, in my opinion. Do I sound female? Yes. Smallc Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 If you don't want it to be personable, you don't have to make it personable. You can either participate in such a section...or not. That's entirely up to you. Quote
