Michael Hardner Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Stompin' Tom dies at age 77. http://www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/stompin-tom-connors-dies-at-77-1.1185264 A real Canadian, singing Canadian music. His ethic was to be proud of where you were from, and at the time he became famous that was a new concept. Maybe it is today too. Guest Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Heard more about him than actually heard his music. I understand he was a very popular Canadian. RIP. Quote

GostHacked Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 Being from Sudbury .. many a nights you would and still can hear the dj slap that song on , and the whole place starts stompin'. Other than people like Gordon Lightfoot, there are not really many true iconic Canadian singers that sang about Canada, like Tom did. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 I've been listening to some of his music on YouTube - good stuff! I'm sure he'll be missed. Quote

Boges Posted March 7, 2013 Report Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) other than I dont think he wanted one, why not? I think he is deserved of consideration. He wrote one of the most iconic Canadian songs. Everyone knows the Hockey Song. Just wondering if a National Day of morning and all it entails is necessary. I'm ambivalent about it. I wouldn't protest the decision though. More people liked him than Jack Layton though. Edited March 7, 2013 by Boges Quote

WWWTT Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Around 20-22 years ago my friends had an interesting run in with stompin Tom. Back then he was more of a guzzlin Joe than stoppin Tom. My friend JP and a couple of other friends were at his parents cottage up north(Ontario).Tom has a cottage in the area. At the nearby town there is a local convenience store where everyone comes in for supplies and JP frequently bumps into Tom and talks with him. One summer day my friends met him at this store, and Tom was plastered! One of my friends asked him for his autograph but Tom had some choice words for his girlfriend!JP's friend wanted to start fighting Tom but JP told him that Tom is an iconic Canadian folk hero and held him back. I heard Tom straightened up which is good. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! August1991 Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) I only know him from The Hockey Song, which I think every Canadian recognizes instantly. Every Canadian ? I knew the PEI potato song. In Québec, the equivalent is possibly Plume Latraverse. But the question of equivalence, as they say, begs the question. Gordon Lightfoot is possibly a greater icon of English Canada. What is the (English) Canadian equivalent of Paul Piché ?
August1991 Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) Closer to Plume: Ahhh the girls are out to BingoAnd the boys are gettin stinkoWe'll think no more of Inco on aSudbury Saturday nightThe glasses they will tinkleWhile our eyes begin to twinkleAnd we think no more of Inco on aSudbury Saturday night --- He was known as "stomping" because he had a piece of half-inch plywood on stage when he played. Tom Connors never sought fame outside English Canada. Few foreigners (and few urban English Canadians) knew of Tom Connors. He was completely unknown in Québec. David Crombie (IIRC) claimed to like him. And I do too. I never met Stompin' Tom in person, but I like his music. It's honest. Edited March 10, 2013 by August1991 Quote
