Other than people like Gordon Lightfoot, there are not really many true iconic Canadian singers that sang about Canada, like Tom did. He wrote one of the most iconic Canadian songs. Everyone knows the Hockey Song. Just wondering if a National Day of morning and all it entails is necessary. I'm ambivalent about it. WWWTT Posted March 8, 2013 Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 Around 20-22 years ago my friends had an interesting run in with stompin Tom. Back then he was more of a guzzlin Joe than stoppin Tom. My friend JP and a couple of other friends were at his parents cottage up north(Ontario).Tom has a cottage in the area. At the nearby town there is a local convenience store where everyone comes in for supplies and JP frequently bumps into Tom and talks with him. One summer day my friends met him at this store,and Tom was plastered!One of my friends asked him for his autograph but Tom had some choice words for his girlfriend!JP's friend wanted to start fighting Tom but JP told him that Tom is an iconic Canadian folk hero and held him back. Tom Connors never sought fame outside English Canada. Few foreigners (and few urban English Canadians) knew of Tom Connors. He was completely unknown in Québec. David Crombie (IIRC) claimed to like him. And I do too. I never met Stompin' Tom in person, but I like his music. It's honest.
