What do you think? Trolling: mental illness or innocuous past-time? Not innocuous, but maybe not as extreme as mental illness. Certainly somebody with anger issues. May be that they let off steam this way and it's for the good. Or, of course, the responses they get just send them over the edge for more drastic expressions of rage. I think we all harbor some of this inside us, and the net removes the social blocks that usually prevent its expression. I'm certainly a bit nastier on the net than in real life. Quote

I sense the blocks keeping some of our political frustrations in check crumbling in the real world too and I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Moonlight Graham Posted August 30, 2012 Report Posted August 30, 2012 What do you think? Trolling: mental illness or innocuous past-time? Borderline mental illness. People with anger issues or insecurities, or just generally hate their own life. People who have some kind of pent up psychological issues and they don't know how to release it in a healthy way in the real world so they do it online. They're kinda like bullies, but at least bullies have the guts to pick on people in real life. Trolls are cowardly passive-aggressive losers who hide in the anonymity of the web. Guest American Woman Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 Mental Illness is part of the reason why they have no lives or friends. And sometimes being a jerk is the reason they have no lives or friends. I'm sure, just like anything else, there are a variety of reasons behind trolling. Some I would wager do it just because they can - it's an outlet where they can be a bully and be a jerk and get away with it. Some likely do it in a pack, too - just like kids making prank phone calls back in the day. I would also wager that some are quite young and just need to grow up. Quote
GostHacked Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 The one guy spends 70 hours a week trolling? (From the article in the OP) At the most I may WORK 50-60 hrs in a week. But on average he spends twice as much time trolling as I do working. Dude needs to get a job and a life perhaps. Quote

What do you think? Trolling: mental illness or innocuous past-time? I've been thinking about this given some of the most recent posts here... Extreme anything is generally a sign of mental illness. I do not see MLW trolls as extreme (unless they are trolling multiple websites) At best, trolling = parody and it is very funny, and actually adds to some discussions. Usually it is just a stupid waste of time. Sometimes I can't distinguish between someone who is trolling or is genuinely out to lunch? Any advice on how to do this? Quote
Mr.Canada Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 You're not as good at trolling as you think. You're just mildly touched is all. Lol. The thing is that I am not trolling.
