Plus, if my memory serves, nuclear bombers have crashed before...in Canada, even. So this isn't all that impossible. Not to mention a Soviet spy satellite and goodness knows what else when we aren't there to hear the tree fall. As I'm sure you know, the Rooshins have different rules when it comes to hauling around nuclear weapons...much like their ify range safety rules at Baikonur. Flippant comes to mind.

Yah the B-36 the Peacemaker crashed in Canada. It wasn't Russian so I don't know what your point is. We need these planes so that we can chase off the Americans?

The Peacemaker...lol. Just 'Peacemaker'. A fine Convair machine, too. Never fired a shot in anger. The site is fairly close to where I'm living.

The only people crashing are people we know and allow in our Airspace.

I'll believe the U.S. GAO over Lockheed Martin propaganda - presuming everything goes right for Lockheed Martin... and based on a decade+ of failed promises/results, who would believe/accept... everything going right for JSFail, the following is the most recent (weeks old) update from the U.S. GAO:

One of the biggest failings within JSFail... the single biggest reason massive procurement delays (and outright downsizing) has occurred. I’d hoped your “evening out” had went better…………None the less, as already mentioned numerous times by myself and others, the aircraft currently in service/testing and in low rate initial production would require retrofitting to enable them to become operational in front line squadrons with regular production aircraft later this decade……………But as stated by the Americans, this approach won’t be taken in full (software upgrades will occur as they become available) and said aircraft will be kept in the training establishment and of course, Canada isn’t purchasing LRIP aircraft……

See we can both play to the extreme exaggeration game although it doesn't actually help the debate in anyway and makes us both look foolish.

WOW...you are playing the exageration game arn't you But if you had any proof that education and our health care was suffering to bring our military into the next century...Canadians would have went on the rampage long ago ...You make it sound like our country is one huge military complex where a bulk of our tax dollars are spent in it's maintance. When in Reality we spend only 8 cents out of every tax dollar you send in on defence. I think the question all Canadians sould be asking is how did our military get into it's current state, and how many programs bennifited from it's gutting, and neglect. And they should ask them was it worth it. Canadian soldiers paided for those cuts in blood and life....without as much as a whine from them, no debates, on costs, none on how costs should be laid out over the next 36 years. none that there was not a fair and open bidding process....Nope they went to serve thier country in what ever they wanted to send us to war in....Canadians should think about that , we are not your enemy, we are not just a dept that likes to spend your money....we are you, your brothers and sisters, daughters, sons, who want to give something back to this great nation, only we want to given a fair chance on coming come back to our families as well....

June 5, 2012 --- F-35 production quality worries Senate panel

The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday questioned the quality of production on the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, citing a "potentially serious issue" with its electronic warfare capability.

"The committee is ... concerned about production quality and whether it is sufficient to ensure the delivery of JSF aircraft to the U.S. and its allies at an affordable price," the committee said in a report accompanying its fiscal 2013 defense budget bill.

Italy has already scaled back its planned orders for the new, radar-evading warplane and several other countries are slowing their orders, citing budgetary pressures. Japan has warned it could cancel its order if the cost per plane rises from what it was offered.

Questions over the quality of production of the F-35 will compound the mounting woes of the $396 billion Pentagon program, which has already been restructured three times in recent years to extend the development phase and slow production.

The committee said it was troubled by the average rate of scrap, rework and repair at Lockheed's Fort Worth, Texas facility from 2009 through the first two months of 2012, but gave no details.

"Inattention to production quality" had led to the discovery of a potentially serious issue with an aperture on the plane that was critical to its electronic warfare capability, the report said. The full extent of the problem was not known, but it underscored the need for the Pentagon and Lockheed to "rigorously manage production quality," it said.

The committee's report reiterated long-standing congressional concerns that Lockheed is already producing planes even as testing continues, which can lead to costly retrofits.

The most recent restructuring added 33 months and $7.9 billion to the development plan.

The report also cited concern about lack of progress on software development for the new aircraft, noting that "the potential cascading effect of failures to deliver software ... can be particularly pernicious."

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Program Finally Gets Some Good News With U.S. Contract

has received a $490 million contract from the US Department of Defence (DoD) to buy materials and components for the seventh batch of 35 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) planes. [1] The seventh batch will deliver 19 conventional take-off and landing or F-35 “A” models to the U.S. Air Force, 6 short take-off and vertical landing or F-35 “B” models to the U.S. Marine Corps, 4 carrier variants of F-35 to the U.S. Navy, and remaining 6 F-35 fighter planes to some of the international partners of the F-35 JSF program, including 3 F-35 “A” models to Italy, 2 F-35 “A” models to Turkey and 1 F-35 “B” model to Britain.

The company has also received an order for 2 F-35s from Norway last week. Norway plans to order 50 more F-35s for an estimated cost of $10 billion and will receive its first 4 F-35s by 2016 and the rest post 2017.

Because they can't get their hands on what they really wanted....the oh so expensive and "problem riddled" F-22 Raptor.

One small problem like not getting the pilot enough oxygen seems to be a real crippling factor. There have been enough pilots to refuse to fly the plane because of it.

It is the most advanced fighter on the planet. Not much good if the pilots refuse to fly them.

Are they locked into anything yet? No? So who cares. If you need me to I can link you all sorts of articles about how upset the US government, Pentagon and basically everyone is about how the JSF has progressed - WAYY late, grossly overbudget and with few solutions in sight.

I used to be all in favour of the program, but not anymore. I have completely different reasons from waldo, because his are based on his expert opinion that manned fighters are already obsolete, but I think he and I would both agree that the program is an unmitigated disaster at this point and will go down as one of the biggest fiascos in US military procurement history.

puuurfect! Is that all ya got? Like I said, after more than decade, finally... finally... Lockheed Martin has been tied to a contract with real performance criteria it must meet. You presumed to beak-off over this contract... you really should have done your homework. In any case, like I challenged you to do - bring those contract pre-conditions forward... let's see just how much concern there really is within the SASC, hey? Chop, chop... times a wasting - bring em forward, hey?
