Guest American Woman Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) US pennies simply are no longer legal tender. We mail them back to the USA I suppose. Yeah, that would be cheap. You'd save a lot of money doing that. But why wouldn't we be able to destroy USA pennies? It isn't against Canadian law. And American law does not apply. I didn't know it was against American law to destroy USA pennies. I guess I best hide out from the feds! Edited March 29, 2012 by American Woman Quote
Smallc Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Sorry, store has a policy where you must buy a certain amount to make a credit card purchase. Because the credit card companies charge the store a fee per transaction. That's debit cards. Credit card companies take a percentage of the sale. Quote

DogOnPorch Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Very true...I always shit can Canadian coins that end up in my pocket! They jam coin counting machines at the bank. As a young kid, I shoved several dollars worth of Canadian quarters into a Seattle Coke machine before finding that gem out. Weights were different. Never did get that Coke... Pennies do have one great point though...the date on them. Very old pennies are still fairly common...little time travelers. I have a box of them from the 30s and 40s. Boges Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Not at those interest rates, which border on usury... Which is why you pay it off on time like a responsible adult. CC's aren't a long-term loan. Open a Line-of-credit if you want that. Quote

I find having lots of cash on you gives one incentive to spend it on stupid stuff easier if you have to whip out a card. Not saying I don't use cash, just not a lot. Quote

Smallc Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 They are going to take the penny out of circulation like they did with the one dollar bill and melt down the metals. Well, yes and no. The penny, if I understand correctly, will be around for years to come, as it will still be used until it's all gone. Quote

jbg Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 http://www.budget.gc.ca/2012/themes/theme2-eng.pdf The pamphlet explains it better than I ever could. So what happens to Peter Frampton's song, "Penny for Your Thoughts"? Does it's name change? Or the Beatles' "Penny Lane". Or "Penny's From Heaven". Moonlight Graham Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 I don't have an issue with this as long as things are rounded up or down fairly. Same. I hate pennies. Women, with purses and better means to carry pennies, probably dislike them a bit less. They'll round up or down depending on the final after-tax price, and they can't predict how many or what items people buy in total at their store for the most part, so they won't really be able to manipulate prices by pegging them at a price to always round up from say 9.95 or 9.96 to $10. The exception might be companies that usually only sell one item at a time, ie: cars, but then who cares lol. But services (ie: haircuts, oil changes etc.) could manipulate their prices like this to take advantage. The bike was almost $100, and the cashier looked mighty PO'd she had to count all that money up AHAHAHAA!! It was such an epic wad of Cnd Tire money. And yes, they're getting rid of the money, I don't think they give it out anymore. Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.
