cybercoma Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) During QP, NDP MP Megan Leslie was asking Peter Kent about Canada's withdrawl from Kyoto. Kent's response to her was that she should have been there. Earlier, however, he had banned opposition MPs from going. Enraged at Kent's blatant dishonesty, Trudeau shouts out "you piece of shit!" Finally, an honest comment out of a politician's mouth during QP. More apologies were issued today as Keith Ashfield rhetorically asked NDP MP Ryan Clearly if Ashfield looks like a bully. Clearly answered "yes." He said he was answering the question asked of him, but later retracted it. Finally, Van Loan made reference to Bob Rae leaving early the other day, which is against parliamentary rules. MPs cannot refer to other MPs presence or absence in the House. Van Loan, however, refused to apologize, saying his use of "checked out" referred to the press conference that Rae gave before the end of session. sharkman Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 Things must be stressful for the minority parties these days. Didn't Rae and some NDP MP beak off recently? They could all use a good dose of Christmas cheer! Quote

olp1fan Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) to be fair Kent banned the opposition parties from Durban than chided them in QP for not attending That is a really POS move by Kent I agree with his stance on Kyoto but the man is an ideologue who couldn't even tell the HoC what Ozone was Kent deserves a good beating Edited December 15, 2011 by olp1fan Quote

eyeball Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 There's a good reason why our Parliament is starting to resemble forums like these, and vice versa. The reasons for remaining civil are becoming moot. How many battle lines need to be drawn anyway - how deep does hatred and loathing have to sink in before it's time to get it on? WTF are we waiting for? We know we wanna. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Boges Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 Nothing wrong with calling Peter Kunt what he is. Typicial response. Had a Conservative dropped a POS blast on any member of the opposition there'd be calls for that members resignation I guarantee. Quote
Keepitsimple Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 When the cameras are rolling, MPs often say outrageous things to be put on stage - or to get coverage on an issue - no matter how uncivil their actions might be. In a Parliament with more "decorum" an MP would simply have risen and in very eloquent terms, laid out the facts that clearly showed that Kent was playing fast and loose with the integrity of his comments - and given him a sound verbal thrashing in the same condescending manner that he used. Of course, that might have gone mostly un-noticed by the media who simply look for sound bites that sell papers or airtime......but call someone a POS and it's all over the news. As Stockwell Day say on CBC last night - except for QP, Parliament's regular business - including committees, is conducted in a fairly civil mannner - but get those cameras rolling and......... In this case, in light of Kent's comments and the background there, then yeah, he's a piece of shit. Quote
MiddleClassCentrist Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) He spoke the truth. Kent was trying to discredit opposition MPs for not being at Kyoto. The CPC dictatorship did not allow them to attend . This is 1984-esque double speak. Edited December 15, 2011 by MiddleClassCentrist Quote Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.
Topaz Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 The camera rolling is NO excuse! They are suppose to be ADULTS represented us, but thinking about some of the MP's don't represent the Canadians. I don't agree what Justin said, but, yeah, I understand why. I've said before and I'll say it again, since the reform party took over the House its been a battlefield. Even the NDP said , the Liberals were more fair a party to the opposition than Harper's gang. The Tories now want to close down committee meetings were the camera are, in other words, they don't want Canadians to see their dirty work at play. They don't care about democracy, only their agenda and don't be surprised if the camera go in the House. Quote

Jerry J. Fortin Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 Why is it expected that an Opposition MP should go to Durban on the Fed's dime? They aren't part of the government. They certainly are part of the Government of Canada. Further to that point I will suggest that those in elected office should have some function and partake in a responsible position, each and every one of them. There are surely more than three hundred odd things that need to get done in this nation, so why is not every single elected representative championing one of those problems and getting is fixed. I will say it outright, the government is not there to fix problems, they are there to service a bureaucracy. Until we change the tune the politicians will sing the same song. Its time to change the tune. Quote

Allowing an opposition MP to come to an international event representing the government would be like President Obama allowing, say Senator Harry Reid, to represent the United States at an international event. Has that ever happened? I wonder if Stockwell Day or Preston Manning were invited to the Kyoto by Chretien. Edited December 15, 2011 by Boges Quote

Environment Minister Peter Kent says opposition parties will not be part of Canada's official delegation at a UN-led meeting in South Africa this month. So if they want to take the Tories to task, they will have to pay their own way. “It's our government's decision with regards to this conference,” Mr. Kent said Wednesday. Canada's delegation will include members of the governing Conservative Party, as well as business leaders and other experts. Link Apparently Liz May and another NDP MP were there. Green Party leader Elizabeth May has been registered as an official delegate at the United Nations climate change summit… by Papua New Guinea. Quote
