overthere Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 Edmonton Oil Kings vs Guelph Storm play today for the Memorial Cup. The Oil Kings beat Val D'or on Friday in triple overtime to get to the final. Guelph is heavily favoured. I'm taking the Kings to gut out another win. On a side note, in every game the Sportsnet commentators have disrespected the Oil Kings. They blab on endlessly about how good their opponents are, while the Kings dominate on the ice. Bizarre stuff. In your ear, Sam Cosentino! Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

overthere Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 These are salad days for the NHL. A massive TV deal. attendance strong in many markets. labour peace for many years ahead. and now a dream media matchup for the Stanley Cup final, the two biggest US cities slugging it out. Boges Posted July 1, 2014 Author Report Posted July 1, 2014 Bringing back Frattin and Komorav? Must mean they're going back to the 2013 roster. Quote

Black Dog Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 9 million per year for Kulemin and Grabovski!! I felt relieved for Leaf fans when I later found out it was the Islanders that signed them. Yep, why pay good hockey players when you can spend money on David Clarkson? Quote
Black Dog Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Surprised the Leafs didn't break the bank on Dave Bolland after the way Leafs media was slobbering all over him. Quote
Mighty AC Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 Clarkson will rebound after that uncharacteristically bad season, though he will never live up to the $7m per season the Leafs will soon be paying him. That contract was just a massive, mistake by management. Clarkson would be a great fit with a team needing toughness like the Oilers at maybe $3M per year. Mighty AC Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 I'd maybe take Clarkson on $3M, but the Oilers don't need wingers. They certainly have plenty of talent up front... However, they could definitely use a forward that doesn't shy away from the corners in the third period and can taking a pounding in front of the net. Boges Posted July 28, 2014 Author Report Posted July 28, 2014 (edited) Plan the parade. http://www.torontosun.com/2014/07/28/maple-leafs-sign-forward-daniel-winnik TORONTO - Add one more veteran to the crowd of forwards with the Maple Leafs. Toronto signed native son Daniel Winnik, primarily a centre, to a one-year deal on Monday afternoon. Who the Hell is Daniel Winnik? Edited July 28, 2014 by Boges Quote
The_Squid Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 Kyle Dubas, 28, is assistant GM. Apparently, he's big into stats ala Billy Beane. Baseball has always been more about statistics than any other sport. Hockey is a bad comparison. An interesting experiment by Shanahan, but probably doomed to fail. How many years will ownership let this experiment to on before needing to see results? http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/kyle-dubas-hiring-a-victory-for-hockey-analytics-1.2714556 Quote

Boges Posted July 29, 2014 Author Report Posted July 29, 2014 Yes... The first line of my post states this. Thanks for reiterating it. Just saying, it's not like NHL's Billy Beane runs the team . . . yet. Quote
Mighty AC Posted July 29, 2014 Report Posted July 29, 2014 Billy wasn't the stats guy either. He hired the stats guy and became convinced that metrics like slugging and on base percentage are better indicators of player performance. Plus players with good numbers in those areas can be cheaper to obtain than others who perform well in more traditionally sought after metrics. Beane was desperate to get anybody cheap, since Oakland is a crap market in a horrible building. Lack of money drove him first and foremost, sabermetrics allowed him to field a respectable team. He is doing very well the last few years and Oakland looks great this year, well rounded. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

However, they could definitely use a forward that doesn't shy away from the corners in the third period and can taking a pounding in front of the net. The Oilers have almost nothing at center, literally. Nugent-Hopkins is a dandy player and has plenty of promise but he will never be big enough to play against the monster first line centers that dominate the dominant West. He should be their second line and power play guy. After him, they have nothing. Boyd Gordon on fourth line, maybe minor league midget Arcobello on third, maybe 18 year old Dreisatl on second. Really, all they have are wingers. The defence is better, they now have a couple of actual NHL defencemen. Another horrible year methinks. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
