kimmy Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 This is by far Canada's best-ever Olympics... but it wouldn't have seemed complete without the men's hockey gold. What an incredible game. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Guest American Woman Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 That was an absolutely incredible game. Great job America you almost had us. It was a great game; it can't get more exiting, for sure. When we tied it at the end, I really thought it might (finally ) be our game (I have to admit I'm usually not so optomistic when we're playing Canada). I'm wiped out just from watching it .... can't imagine how the teams must feel! Well, I have a pretty good idea how Team Canada feels. Great finish for Canada. Quote
kimmy Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) About this time last week people were ridiculing the "Own the podium" slogan and how our athletes were failing to meet expectations and all of this. Well, as it turns out, Canada's officials had anticipated 30 medals and the team finished with 26. That's actually pretty close to what they anticipated. Failing to win the overall medal count wasn't a result of failure of Canada's athletes to live up to expectations. It was a result of American athletes exceeding expectations. And no other country has ever won this many gold medals at the Winter Olympics. I doubt anybody was predicting Canada to do that. Personally, I think the Olympics have exceeded expectations in every sense. Athletes included. -k Edited February 28, 2010 by kimmy Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Smallc Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 Own the podium was a complete success. We got so many 1 - 5th finishes. We did so well. We have to keep up the funding now though....btw, Own the Podium was a Liberal program. Quote

waldo Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Get bent. We saw a week and a half of "own the podium" failed. Well it didn't! as I said, you've been the only one to bring politics into what has been, outside of your input, a rather positive celebration of the event and results. in terms of a strategy of funding athletes, yes... OTP was a Liberal originated initiative. The funding aspect is certainly justified in terms of the global presence the Olympics holds; certainly justified in terms of bringing forward a stronger nationalist sentiment across the country... although I expect that wouldn't sit well with your separatist slant, right? for me, the only downside of OTP is how it was portrayed by other countries... an initial ridiculing that, as much as anything, was a suggestion/inference by (some) countries that Canada had suddenly taken on an uncharacteristically Canadian "braggart" position. After all, who needs the "ugly Canadian" portrayal? Quote

I'm usually a bit of an Olympic Grinch but I wound up following the games more than I usually do and I was impressed with the performance of the athletes. The personal stories of some were compelling. I still think the competition for the games and the build up to them is a nauseating spectacle and the expense correspondingly over the top, but I guess there's worse things we could blow our kid's money on.
