DogOnPorch Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 I agree. I wish the Police had shoot to kill orders. Well...not quite. But, they should be made to PAY for the damage and the security costs as well as heavily fined and given criminal records. That should cook-em-up pretty darn good. Moonlight Graham Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 So do I - especially since the winners are largely a function of each country's willingness to fund the infrastructure that produces these athletes. That's the big problem i have with the olympics. Money has as much to do with the quality of athletes a country has. But other than that, the Olympics as a whole are fine to me. Heck, i think it brings international cooperation and unity. Is there a better example where so many countries throughout the world come together and cooperate in such a peaceful (well, 99% of the time anyways) way? It's (mostly) friendly competition, and IMO has a positive affect on the world. It's a great example of how the international community can come without trying to figure out ways to kill or not kill each other. Shady Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 Did anybody see the medal ceremony for Alexander Bilodeau's gold medal? Wow was it amazing. I highly recommend watching it to those of you who haven't yet. On a seperate note, I think that the short-track speed-skating is probably the best, most fun event to watch, other than hockey of course. Quote

Argus Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 And yet it's been shown that the more a nation supports its athletes (financially and institutionally), the better they end up doing generally. I don't see anything wrong with taking pride in OUR athletes. It's a normal emotional sentiment, and the Olympics have been hyped up into this grand, important spectacle, so people get excited by it - for some reason. As I pointed out earlier, I didn't watch the opening ceremonies. I have not watched any of it since then. I don't have a hate on for them, though like others, I think we could have done better things with the money. But I don't see why I should watch something because it's the olympics, when I wouldn't watch it any other time. Most of the sports represented in the Olympics wouldn't even get onto tv if it weren't in the OLYMPICS. And frankly, it's hard for me to consider a bunch of people riding downhill on boards of whatever kind (sleds, skis, etc) to be these great and wonderful athletes that I should be admiring. I tend to feel sorry for them, rather. Most of them have given their lives to their "sports" and will never get anything out of it but finishing in twelfth place in the Olympics. Shady Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 But I don't see why I should watch something because it's the olympics, when I wouldn't watch it any other time. I don't think anyone is telling you that you should watch the olympics. But at the sametime, don't tell anyone they shouldn't. If you don't wanna watch them, don't, but nobody hear really gives a crap whether you do or not. Most of the sports represented in the Olympics wouldn't even get onto tv if it weren't in the OLYMPICS. Actually, most of the sports represented in the Olympics do get on tv on a regular basis every winter, even during non-Olympic years. It may be that you're just not interested in them, and don't know. Quote

Bonam Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) In regards to the Olympics and the topic of the thread, a desire for competition is a part of human nature. The original post compares the Olympics to war, and war indeed has much to do with the origin of the Olympics back in Greece. But if nations can come together at an event and participate in activities under the same rules, that means there is at least some minimal level of communication and respect between them. Even ardent "nationalists" who hate the idea of another country winning at an event at the Olympics over their own would have at least some grudging respect for foreign gold medalists. Letting out the human need to compete with each other in organized events, that also promote intermingling and communication between many nations, and interest a large portion of the world's citizenry, may help to reduce the prospect if war, if anything. I hope that the temperature goes up to a hundrend degrees in Vancouver...what a spit in the eye of general humanity - to see such poverty and drug addiction in down town Vancouver - and all the idiots what to snow board along as if the world was just great - I hope they slide in mud. That's just the thing, the world IS great, for the most part. Just a shame so many people are too bitter to see it. Edited February 19, 2010 by Bonam Quote

Wilber Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Yup, I think goaltending has been a problem for Canadian teams lately.
