  1. why not $30? No, Notley herself would characterize this as social engineering. It is intended to change the class structure of Humanity in Alberta.
  2. Canada is about to get their own example/case study in social engineering. Notley has raised the min wage in AB, and by October it will be the highest in Canada at $12.20/hour. In two years it will be raised to $15/hour.
  3. In what way are they unique? Most Canadian cities are much too new to have much flavour or character.
  4. Because nobody outside Canada watched the Canada Cup. The NHL wanted to grow the game internationally, and true international hoickey started going to the Olympics in 1992 when pro players were permitted. Of course, all the Russians and others pre-1992 were pros, but everybody pretended otherwise. The Olympics made the Canada Cup redundant, it was the venue the NHL could use.
  5. Wrong tense: it used to matter. Sochi is the last Oly hockey you'll see for about 12 years. I am no fan of Bettman, and the benefactors of this 'World Cup' will be mostly the NHLPA. But I also see their point(the NHL and NHLPA). The NHL does want to market itself internationally, and has sacrificed a lot of money to be at previous Olympics. But the blame for their absence in the next couple of Olympics sits squarely on the ignorant greedheads at the IOC. They seem determined to screw themselves. Oh well.
  6. A forthcoming major economic challenge for utilities will be how to plan their grids for much more input from small producers. That assumes that producers of intermittent power want to be connected to the grid for those times when their own sources are not adequate. Diesel backup? How is that going to work in terms of carbon output, particularly in urban areas?
  7. My road trips this summer were complete opposites . About 3 weeks in Europe, mostly in Paris and London. Then three weeks travelling from Alberta to Yukon and back, which is around a 5200 km round trip by road on the direct route we took this year. Once again, my belief that the very very best of Canada is The North was confirmed. No, not The North like Muskoka, but the real deal. We had planned to take the Dempster Highway again from Dawson City Yukon to Inuvik and on to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyuktuk, but the final leg to Tuk is not quite open. Now scheduled for 2017. In the end, there had been heavy rain on the Dempster Hwy, and washouts prevented us from going further than Tombstone Park. Tombstone is surely one of my Top 3 best places in Canada. The first picture is of the Tombstone Valley. It is an ethereal and surreal place. http://blog.caasco.com/travel/the-10-best-photos-of-the-yukon-territory/
  8. What I find amazing is that so very few Canadians ever go to what makes our country interesting to foreigners: the oxymoron of accessible wilderness. Lets face it: our cities are not interesting at all when compared to others in the world. But every year I spend a good chunk of my time in Yukon, and every year I observe lots of German tourists, and very few people from Canada.
  9. The comfort in Indian trains is directly related to the class of seat you choose. In Western terms, even the highest class is not expensive. When planning a trip on the massive and bust Indian rail network, the lowest long distance class I'd consider is second class reserved(which has fold down berths for overnight hauls). Day trips are very comfy in first class Chair Cars. You can book on the official Indian Rail website, but it is pretty much a nightmare and paying for seats with foreign credit cards can be difficult. A much easier site for Indian rail travel is Cleartrip. They also do well on domestic flight bookings, but be aware that not every domestic airline is on Cleartrip site, it is worth checking both Cleartrip and individual airline sites for full info. India has far more domestic air choices available in recent years, this is because there have been more airports built/expanded in smaller cities recently. Most of them have more than one carrier servicng them, so fares can be competitive.
  10. It is true that English language (American, of course) movies, music, TV have influenced the predominant position of the English language in the world. This summer I spoke to two business people, one in Belgium and one in France, who independently said " English is the global language". Neither of them were prompted, but simply stating reality. And the reason is that business needs a common tongue, other than the obvious one of money. And though it was in doubt 30 years ago, there is no question that English is now the language of commerce, trade and travel everywhere.
  11. The "new, revised process " has htree crieteria, and all three must be met for appliciations to be even be considered. Anybody at all famialiar knows that this preliminary part of the hiring process is critical, you must address all three in the application or it must get tossed. Trudeau ahs been very clear on this: 1. Must be bilingual. New requirement. In the federal service, that would at this level mean fluency at at least the 'C" level, which means complete fluency in both. There is also an exempt level, for those that are perfect in both langauges. This requirement would mean most of the existing Supreme Court judges would not be able to apply. 2. Must represent the 'diversity' of Canadian society. New requirement. White men are not part of the diversity, so five of the nine current SC judges would not qualify for their own jobs. The four women would qualify under a Trudeau definition. 3. Must have excellent proven competence as a jurist. Old and formerly the only qualifier. All nine current SC judges would qualify. Note that the important thing about these 3 qualifications is that applicants MUST demonstrate all three criteria to be considered beyond the first application. The federal screening process is transparent, any application that does not meet all three on initial screening- tossed out. Translation: no white men, period, no matter what they have accomplished as jurists. They do not and cannot qualify for consideration because they are not 'diverse'. Yes, some of can pretend that white men are part of Trudeaus 'diversity', but we also know that is simply mealymouthed bullshit. We live in a strange f***ing world now.
  12. Altuve is having a an epic year and certainly deserves the MVP if it was awarded right now. Not only does he hit for an insane average, he is a Gold Glove fielder and steals bases. He is an inspiration to small men too. He is built like a brick outhouse, but only 5'6 tall! I wonder about roids........ Why do you think Davidson is having a better year than Altuve? Their stats are similar in some categories, but Altuve has a much higher batting average. He'd win the MVP easily. And he has a big advantage in that regard in one way- his team is weaker at the plate than the Jays. Opposing teams can try and pitch around Altuve, and he still hits like a demon. They cannot with Donaldson, who is always foillowed in the lineup by some serious bash. The Jays are certainly in Win This Year mode, they have no choice with the imminent departure of EE and the clear quick collapse of Bautista as a position player. I think the Jays were influenced by people like Russ Martin, who more or less politely and publicly called out management after a game in Houston. And Donaldson, who when asked post game smirked, said "we like our team" and took off- meaning he wanted their best pitcher to keep pitching.....The six man rotation only works if they get quality starts from Stroman, Dickey and now Liriano. It does help give everybody a bit more rest, What a great deal it could be if Liriano turns out to be a quality starter, it gives the Jays options now and in the playoffs. Playoff lineup(and yes I know I'm getting ahead of myself). Starters: Happ, Estrada, Sanchez, Liriano. Send Stroman to the pen for solid long relief. Feldman too. Or Stroman(assuming he gets his mojo back and keeps it) as a starter and Liriano as a much needed, strong lefty in the pen- I like that scenario best. What is up with Upton? His at bats seem to mostly consist of 3 disinterested hacks, then go sit down.
  13. The original Ghostbusters cost about $30 million to make, and grossed nearly $300 million. Under any formula, even the arcane accounting of Hollywood studios, it made a lot of money and the return on investment was insane.. On the other hand, the new version looks like it will be a massive flop and cost Sony pictures around $200 million in the end. http://thegg.net/articles/paul-feigs-ghostbusters-2016-flops-really-hard-at-the-box-office/ Ouch! I'd like to be the first to nominate Kate McKinnon for a Golden Raspberry as Worst Actor for her turn in Ghostbusters. She mugs and hams her way through a weak script, and personally made it far worse than it had to be. She will never rival Raspberry multiple award winners like Adam Sandler, Sly Stallone, Costner and Pauly Shore- but she earns the 2016 nod for her latest role.
  14. I agree about the numbers. but it remains folly to believe that all Trump supporters are rednecks. That sort of thinking has led to his success, and brought the political situation to where it is today. A big chunk of his followers are longtime, disaffected Democrats, who are under or unemployed, and see the traditional political elites as being responsible for that condition. It is not that they are voting Republican, or loving Trump, but they think that he represents those who have no other voice in America. But.... I think Trump is maxed out right now. Most of the 'undecided' vote will hold their noses and vote Clinton. IMO the final tally will be strongly Clinton.
  15. I would agree with you if you were correct. But you are not. Google 'parthogenesis' , which deals with the creation of fully formed life without benefit of fertilization. Many species already do achieve this, and it will soon be readily attainable by humans. There is no question that it is possible because the science is mature. . And then there is cloning.... The entireity of your argument, all of it, is based on the notion that a fetus is the same thing as a baby. In Canada, that notion is rejected in law and in the firm opinions of a majority of Canadians opinions. Get over it.
  16. That does happen, but not very often. They have a job unlike any other. That does not condone or forgive criminal behaviour, but the 'us against them' mentality it engenders is entirely human and natural. We are tribal creatures heart and soul, and cops are undoubtedly acting like we all do in packs. Circle the wagons against threat.
  17. It is great to see the Jays win a close game, which is rare. They just are not capable of manufacturing runs. Or who knows, since they just never try. Hats off the Dickey, who was awesome last night. Liriano is the key to the whole pitching formula. He will start maybe 10 games . The Jays need 6 wins from him, or 8 decent starts. If he can give them that, in theory, Sanchez can give them some quality innings from the pen until he starts again in the playoffs. It is not clear who takes his bullpen innings in the playoffs, but that is for another day. Barnes looked good in his pro debut, he came in and threw strikes to the best of the Astros order. The Astros have had two wonderful long relief outings from their pen. Who would fill that role for the jays this season? Best play in the series: Altuve bunts for a base hit, and could have stopped for a beer on the way to first. Imagine, their #3 hitter and the best in baseball this year, doing whatever to get on base in a close game I'd love to see the Jays try something, anything like that but I know it will never happen. The Jays are hanging in against some good teams, despite not hitting their best, nice job overall.
  18. That is not an answer. Yes or no are both answers. Choose one.
  19. Ghostbusters had a very good review in Postmedia, from a guy that is usually right. So, I went last night. He wasn't right this time. Ash 74 had it right, and I commend him or her for lasting 20 minutes. It's a turkey.
  20. Yeah, that will certainly stop everybody from complaining when they get stopped for driving drunk when they were just mostly drunk not really drunk, or when they get arrested for slapping that bitch because she deserved it, or get busted when they were going to put that money back later- and those f%%ing cops had to interfere. It s a really difficult job that requires constant value judgements with people they meet all day every day when those people are often on their very worst behaviour. Cops get paid pretty well, but not well enough I'd ever want to do it. In return, they most often get hate and enmity in return. Their reaction is entirely human.
  21. Where does he go for the votes and seats? To a new electoral system of ranked or preferential ballots, of course. There has been a slight delay while he gets that pesky Senate organized to ram through a Parliamentary vote on this topic, but look for it early in 2017.
  22. Your hair or toenail clippings are a collection of fully formed human cells. With the right genetic manipulation, they could both be cloned into a human being. We know that every sperm is sacred, would you extend that to every human cell?
  23. I don't know what you mean. The first two ST serials with Chris Pine in the lead were a welcome refresher for the franchise. This one was tedious and slow.
  24. There was no point in keeping Chavez, who has lived up to his billing as a borderline MLB player. Bolsinger will head straight to Buffalo, on the hope he can play someday for the big team. Feldman is interesting in that he might start at some point, but most likely work from the pen. He might also replace Stroman in the rotation for a while. The question I have is : why did the contending Astros dump him for so little, a prospect far from playing in MLB?? Is their pitching that great? The key guy is Liriano, who was once expected to be elite but has fallen pretty hard from grace in recent years. Hutchison is another guy who may or may not remann major league player, so I guess the Jays are not risking much in a reclamation project. If they move Sanchez to the pen now, Liriano will get maybe 12 starts. If the Jays make the playoffs, they will bring Sanchez back as a playoff starter to join Happ and Estrada. They'll be auditioning Stroman, Liriano and perhaps Feldman for the fourth starter position, and might move one or more of them into a bullpen that will be weakened when Sanchez moves out of it. I like that Liriano is a lefty. The Jays may or may not have gotten better, once again they have acquired some reclamation projects and bordlerine talent, and hope one or more becomes Chris Colabello in a big hurry. I am glad that they did something, anything rather than sit on their thumbs. And goodbye to Chavez and Morales.
  25. MMMM.... I thought it was very weak overall, not nearly as good as the previous chapters. It was a struggle to stay awake. I have narrowed down the problem to Simon Pegg. He has been OK in some other movies, and terrific in Shaun of the Dead. But the script in this turkey was really weak, his part was not in any way memorable and I noticed he was the co-writer.
