Proportional Representation Discussion
overthere replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Correct. Every MP of every stripe would spend 95% of their time scheming on how to gain influence and control, the other 5% would be at lunch. This would be a downgrade from the current 90% spent scheming. -
I have not seen All is Lost, but Redford is nothing like Johanssen. He has nothing to prove as an actor and no need to cement or gloss a reputation. He does not even need to remain relevant as he ages, as he is already well respected in several areas other than acting. Hardy is in fact much like Johanssen in terms of age, body of work and similar places in their careers. But Locke is not a vanity movie. He appears in every scene because that is how it was written, for a single character- that is the plot A similar movie would be Buried with Ryan Reynolds. I was a bit disappointed with Locke. Hardy is a fine actor, but he has been better in movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Lawless and best of all in The Drop. Other examples of vanity projects : Sean Penn in I Am Sam, Charlize Theron in Monster. Theron made a fortune off that bit of hackneyed self promotion, despite being a generally crappy actor.

So is Ralph Krueger. Tom Renney Craig MacTavish Pat Qu.... never mind.

Agreed that SJ is better looking than Buscemi. but she cannot carry his jock as an actor. Once I've seen SJ without her kit on a couple times and the thrill is gone, I'll take Buscemi. On the big screen if possible.

Condo boards cannot prevent a home from being rented out in the usual fashion, but they do have ways of controlling bnb activities or short term rentals. All the bylaws I've seen require that an owner not use the unit 'for any purpose other than as a single family residence'.

U.S. Whooping Cough outbreak worst in 70 years
overthere replied to kimmy's topic in Health, Science and Technology
If you have infants in your home, do not allow anybody not vaccinated for pertussis anywhere near the baby. Whooping cough can and is a slow and nasty death for babies. The odds of a baby catching it from a vaccinated person is much smaller than it is from an unvaccinated person. -
I'm not that broad, nor am I a broad. I did not care for it and never did calculate 'what is was' Did you notice Johanssen was in pretty much every scene? That makes it a vanity flick IMO. I just deleted a long rant about watching movies on TV vs. at a theater. I'm proud of myself.

Proportional Representation Discussion

Keerect, though the left will never actually be in power just as the right will never be. In Canada all governments are a tad to the left of dead center on a political spectrum. Occasionally they veer ever so slightly a compas poit from that, then flee back when the angry shouts of 'COMMIES' or 'SECRET FASCIST AGENDAS' start echoing. We have an immediate and growing problem in this country with regard to our inability to build the simplest infrastructure to insure economic stability for the future. We cannot even agree on a Parliamentary policy to deal with sexual harassment, something small companies do routinely in a few hours. I have no interest in any form of goverance that slows decision making and action stemming from a decision. That includes endless coalition governments. Vote. Consider. Vote again. Decide. Act. And Repeat. -
It is a vanity movie. Many actors feel obliged to do them at a certain point in their careers. Johannsen felt her talent was so immense, she needed to do two in a row to display her prodigious chest talent: Lucy and Under the Skin. Your cultural development would not be impaired by skipping both.

No, that is just wishful thinking. Of course PR is an initiaitive of political parties- but only when it suits them. I once reviewed the national and provincial platforms of the NDP across Canada. It was when there were NDP govts in SK and MB, and the federal party was languishing in distant third place as it has historically. In all the larger provinces and federally the NDP had PR as a party policy. It was policy in SK because it would have enhanced their seat count. It was policy federally because it would not enhance their seat count. It was not policy in MB because it would hurt their seat count. Funny how that works. I heard Elizabeth May on the radio a couple of weeks ago enthusiastically endorsing PR. I don't know where or how you generated the fantasy that political parties do not support PR.

Overall, Canada is one of the most successful of such countries. I'm not sure I'd call the change an upgrade, given that reality. And other countries have not 'upgraded' to PR. They include Canada, USA, the United Kingdom and the largest and most remarkable democracy in the world: India. They are all strong countries with healthy democracies, wouldn't you agree?

Baloney. The chickens came home to roost n Greece, and the eggs were laid by Greeks not Germans. They could help themselves immensely by simply paying their own income taxes. They could only not have seen it coming if every adult was a Helen Keller clone. -
But that has not resulted in insecurity for our country, not in any significant way. Or do you feel we are in danger of invasion soon? Note that our involvement in both world wars had little to do with the US and much to do with a call to arms from a different ally. Huh? Joining the fight with allies is not an option, unless you are also willing to have an ally not join a fight you are more directly involved with. Or do you think an aligned country with treaties and alliances (I'm talking about Canada in case you hadn't guessed) can pick and choose and expect your allies not to do that when you are in need? No, you cannot have it both ways.

I'm just thinking that Canada- Istanbul is at elast a 12 hour trip with a major time change. A week is not long considering what you lose off each end. On the other hand, that is an excellent destination and you can see and do a lot in that time. On a shortish trip, I like to take a city tour right away. It helps me get oriented and I can identify places and parts of the city that are of interest. In istanbul, I suggest that a harbour tour be part of the city tour. It is only in the last century or so that people travelled by land to Istanbul, it has been a maritime crossroads for thousands of years and the city grew from the waterfront back. I envy you, no overseas trips for me this year until next fall!

The proponents of PR are those that stand to benefit from it, including those that will never form a govt or have any influence in govt without PR. FPTP is supported by those who have a realistic chance of forming govt. In Canada, that means NDP and Green support PR, Liberal and Cons support FPTP. It is all simply opportunism, all of it by all of them.

U.S. Whooping Cough outbreak worst in 70 years

And then get yourself ot a public health clinic to be revaccinated for pertussis. I did that a couple weks ago, at the urging of the public health nurse who was giving me an unrelated travel vaccination. The shots we get when young have a shelf life. Whooping cough can be deadly for the elderly and especially for infants- babies cannot be vaccinated until age one. Most deaths of children from whooping cough are contracted from adults: the parents and family crowding around that new birth. The public nurse had about of the disease herself a couple years ago. She saidf she coughed until she vomited for weeks, and in the process broke two ribs from violent coughing. All preventable. -

It's the 1/3 that makes us a prosperous first world economy. If you don't sell things the world wants: finished goods or commodities- your economy is in trouble. There are minor exceptions where items like international fin Japan, Germany, UK, USA, Canada, Benelux, Switzerland, Scandinavia and much of Europe all refute that statement about 1st world economies. ancial services affect the trade balance, but we are not and will not be part of that. Ontario and Quebec have simialr problems to the Rust Belt, it is not generic to Canada.. The highly paid and very expensive semi skilled work has moved offshore and it will never return to central Canada. The Southern Sates offer what we will never offer in central Canada: low wages, very low taxes at all levels, and no unions. The old jobs won't return to central Canada. -
Please stop saying this, it is completely incorrect. Canada has participated in peacekeeping missions and will continue in that role. They have also and will continue to willingly participate in wars in support of our longstanding alliances. Canada is not and never has been a neutral country. We are not and never have been a 'non-aligned' country.

What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
Foxcatcher: very dark, somber adaptation of a true story about a rich man who wants to coach a world class wrestling team, and recruits brothers who have both won Olympic gold medals to build around. the entire cast is very good, but there is very little in the way of cheeriness. It will get some Oscar nominations. I rewatched Headhunters(on US Netflix), a subtitled Norwegian thriller written by Jo Nesbo. It is a terrific thriller with many twists. Fun stuff. -
You're right. it depends on what you are looking for and of course how much time you have. Unlike the OP, I would not consider an eight night trip to the Eastern Mediterrean. That is too much like work. We just prefer to drift when we arrive and see what is of interest rather than what is provided. I do not want to see the gift shop at every stop.

Of what? Merkel is a masterful manager of the German economy and is completely aware of what is required to maintain a dominant position in Europe and the world. -
Wild Rose Party falling apart....

It doesn't matter what Harper says or does with characters like you in the cheap seats. If he very clearly states Canadian foreign policy publicly , he a poseur. If he says nothing, he is an American puppet. Sigh. -
You better hope then that some fairy godmother pays the bills for your upcoming geriatric care. Globalization of industry is a f**king reality. Those $70k per year plus great benefits semi-skilled factory jobs are not coming back to Ontario, ever. Those days are gone. Your lunch money has been stolen by Mexico China and many others. Alberta did not take it from you. So Canada better work with what is has to sell to the world, and get over this stupid, wasteful regional bickering and row this boat together.

Backwards. With the exception of world financical centers like London, NYC and Hong Kong, services are mostly internal. Services are of course required internally, but they don't do much for favorable balances of trade. The most successful economies export: goods, commodities or both. China Germany USA do not prosper from call centers or banking services. It is not luck. It is planning and execution, both are activities we are increasingly awful at in Canada.
