Ontario Teachers Potential Strike
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
It is neither an exaggeration or misrepresentation in the example I know best, which is my spouse. She works that and more, though she tends to do it at the school rather than at home. On the other hand she is paid well and the benefits are excellent. -
Other than the currency today is dollars rather than blankets and flour, the process sounds remarkably like how the Crown first came to possess First Nations land in the first place a long time ago. Fewer guns and overt racism today, but still...

By choosing an expensive degree in a clearly useless field- a choice that is available to anybody with the ability to do research and assemble facts. You know, a university student. By choosing to not avail themselves of better betting jobs elsewhere. I don't blame them for the demise of manufacturing jobs in Ontario, or the demise of careers at the tomato packing plant that gave their parents a comfy lifestyle.. But I do insist that they accept responsibility for making informed choices regarding their own lives. I have no wish to fund unrealistic expectations or fantasies of entitlement. Playtime is over when we the citizens have finished subsidizing that first undergrad degree.

Lou Marsh goes to a Bobsledder Skater?!?
overthere replied to Boges's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Tennis never takes center stage. Coverage of tennis is just filler between major sports. It won't ever be cared more about than it is now, and that isn't much. It is as boring to watch live as it is on TV. -
In fact, Aboriginal Development spends a lot of time mediating disputes in First Nations over governance and elections. There are over 600 First Nations in Canada, and certainly not all of them are at peace with each other. In many cases, the dispute is about the very same things we white people see as problems in their management of their affairs. Imagine that. A thankless job for AD, as you can also imagine. eta: I think a troll may be afoot here.

It's more like comparing Glace Bay to Moose Jaw. None of it matters much to anybody. I'm a hardcore lifetime sports fan, but..... -
The Liberals have to be a bit careful, those safe seats in ethnic ridings can get turned around in a hurry. Take Edmonton Southeast, which was a riding with a huge South Asian population that was owned outright for many years by Liberal David Kilgour. He and the Libs pissed off the locals something awful around 2005 in nomination and riding assocaition disputes and now they are in a distant third place. The riding has changed names now but it still has the same ethnic balance, and they vote strategically

Yes, but the question was what happens to jobs when the economy restructures? Do people die of hunger, disappear into the mist... or? What actually happens is what will happen to the 'young people' of the OP: they will adapt because they don't have a choice. The not so funny thing is that the economy didn't do it to them, they did it to themselves. There is no need for the replacement job to be of "equal quality". That is a subjective term and has little meaning really. What is needed is that there be another job, and clearly there are other jobs right now in Canada. Unemployment overall is at a reasonable level, the turnover is healthy for any economy. Sure, there are a lot of people in manufacturing jobs that cannot find semi-skilled work for the same pay, but the obvious way out is to gain skills and move, or move and gain skills. Twas ever so. Macroeconomics 101.

New Ontario Mandatory Pension Plan
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Why are you confident that the Ontario government will have that money in 10 , 20 50 years? Is there something, anything in their financial stewardship that convinces you of their competence? Yeah, I'd rather rely on some competent analysis than on wishing and hoping. Call me crazy. Increased payroll taxes like this cannot help an Ontario economy trying to dig itself out of a big hole. -

Are you the same guy who wants to move the Jooos to NWT because their DNA is hinky? Are you seriously suggesting that the Jews are recent arrivals in Palestine? Next up: Holocaust Denial. I've seen this movie before.

There's nothing wrong with mortgage insurance, the taxpayer just shouldn't be on the hook for it. CMHC should be sold to private interests or abolished. CMHC has annual profit of around $2 billion and a miniscule annual default rate around .3%. It is the lowest risk investment imaginable for the taxpeyers, and the results of the last 65 years support it. And wiothout it- generations of Candians would be renting and our economy overall would be much poorer. You have not been able to get CMHC insurance on any property with >$1,000,000 for more than two years, and the private insurers who have 25% of the market are even stricter. Everybody has to quaify on the same criteria and they have gotten much stricter the last few years. You think that causes problems in the Housing market?. Its nothing compared to what happens when you lend money to people that don't qualify. Banks fail. Didn't happen here. CMHC was part of that. Rubbish, and backwards rubbish at that. They still must qualify, still must be able to pay, and every federal govt uses CMHC as a tool to speed or slow the economy. The rule changes in 2012 and other years had immediate effect on housing markets. Without mortgage insurance, almost nobody would be able to buy a home. then or now or tomorrow. And by forcing banks to limit their uninsured lending to 80%, the Bank Act protects them from their own greed. By contrast, the free for all in the US had the results we saw there and did not see here.

Surprise! Israel refuses cooperation with UN Gaza war probe
overthere replied to marcus's topic in The Rest of the World
1. I'm not a Zionist, not a Jew, and not part of the Zionist crowd. 2, Stop profiling me, it is insulting to your intelligence. 3. The 40 countries don't just object to Israels borders in the Occupied Countries, they refuse to recognize the right of Israel to exist at all. I understand it is difficult , but please try to differentiate between the first and last parts of that sentence. Then consider what this means to Israel: Israel: "The State of Israel would like to open meaningful and binding peace negotiations" Hamas, Hezbollah, Fatah, Lebanon, Syria, Iram and about 37 others: " What is that awful smell? Did the Jews fart again"- 293 replies

I don't get this part. If you are accused, you are guilty in many minds. That is how it works.

Is Cross Border Shopping Unpatriotic ?
overthere replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Canada / United States Relations
No, that is not it. Honda vehicles were 20% higher in Alberta than in Arizona, and the only major difference was the 5% GST, so the difference was 15%. The difference is that the Candian market is smaller and easier to control. Manufacturers charge more here than in the US because they can get away with it. The Internet is changing this somewhat... For example, car dealers here- in some cases- have reduced parts cost quite a bit because they are getting eaten by internet competition. This of course only applies to common parts. If you are buying 'dealer only ' parts, they are still far higher than they are in America. -
Doesn't seem to be happening? The population of the US was about 40 million in 1870, compared to about 320 million today. Are you saying those farmers who lost their livelihood in the last 144 years are still looking for jobs milking cows?

A $3000 investment in a RBC GIC would earn about $45 per year right now, or <$4 per month. Somebody point me to an account without a large minimum deposit that I can get for <$4/month.
