What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
This is the second time I refer you to my answer, above. Do you have a limit to asking the same question? I do, for answering. This is it. Please. Inherent Vice is not in the same league as The Big Lebowski. Many movies have stoner dudes. BL was filled with wit and intelligence, both sadly lacking in Inherent Vice. Oh, and an actual plot done in well under 2 hours. If you'd like a dreamy movie from 2014 that is far better than IV, try Only Lovers Left Alive. Detective movies set in Los Angeles? Gee, that has never been done before. I recommend The Past and A separation, both extremely well written and acted movies that explore themes a bit deeper than Inherent Vice. You know, movies that require you try a little harder. -

I prefer to pursue peace in the way that neutral nonaligned countries like Sweden and Switzerland. Friendly, cheerful and armed to the teeth. -

There are a couple of rubs there.... the big one of course is that changing the laws(treaties. The Indian Act) would eliminate all the provisions of laws that protect First Nations from the predations of white society, or more accurately the Crown as represented by the Government of Canada. More simply, you and me. I understand that you wish to assimilate First Nations into general society in the premise that their lives would be improved. They have refused this obvious goal for 150+ years. They just won't join us and many have died while we tried. Perhaps another approach is required. This one does not work, obviously. Not only a different approach, but perhaps we should abandon the goal of assimilation. -

The 'political pressure ' was his own. Trudeaus ideas of the economics of a just society were much more closely aligned with countries he admired like Cuba and China. He abhorred anything that would link him with American ideology. There was no 'run of success' because it was and is a stupid idea for anybody with any grasp of economics -
U.S. Whooping Cough outbreak worst in 70 years
overthere replied to kimmy's topic in Health, Science and Technology
The specific problem with whooping cough/pertussis vaccinations is that they cannot be given to pregnant women or children under one year old. That means that babies are at risk, and the source of infection is likely to be older unvaccinated children and adults whose immunity is degraded over time. It is free and easy for an adult to get revaccinated for pertussis. I did it before Christmas, because there are babies in my life. I'd hate to be the reason one died. -

seem to have struck a nerve with Michael, to the extent he has gone generic hate on me. Mike, I'm a movie slut. I'll watch anything at a theater, we go to at least one per week for many years and indie flicks are usually the first choice. As I said, Anderson has done some fine work. Th underrated Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood is a masterwork, Hard Eight was decent , Punch Drunk LOve amazingly made Adam Sandler look like an actor and I may be the only person who loved Magnolia. But Inherent Vice is a big swing and miss. Inherent Vice is not comparable to this list in any way. It's also the second very long slow movie by Anderson. I wonder if he is falling victim to Eddie Murphy syndrome, and refuses to edit anything. Inherent Vice is far too long. -

It would follow the family tradition of being hopeless at somehting. For Trudeau Sr, the economy was something that completely baffled him for his entire career. That was ironic for a man who never saw a social program he didn't like, and that the country could not afford. Wage and price controls, anybody? It is not yet clear which field(s) of governance Trudeau Jr is woeful at yet, but it is already certain that they exist. -

You are not expected or required to like him. He is not your leader. White people hated MLK too, until such time as his career and life ended abruptly for reasons that are well known. And no, I am not comparing him to MLK. Sooner or later, First Nations across Canada will find a charismatic, powerful leader that will bring about change. I fully expect the process to be divisive, confrontational, violent and will finally expose the strong hatreds on both sides. It's overdue. There is no other path to reconciliation than this IMO. The racism against First Nations in this country is our dirty little secret, but it won't be a secret forever. -

OH my. I would rate Inherent Vice as one of the years biggest disappointments. I think it is intended as some kind of noire comedy. It was not funny and much of the dialogue was mumbled. Maybe it was funny or interesting, but who can tell when the principals speak with mouths full of marbles? In the middle of the movie there were a few people snoring loudly nearby, and I found myself wishing I was one of them. It is down to one screen already and will mercifully be gone entirely soon. I did detect a story, but it was just not interesting. What a waste of a fine cast. I normally like Andersons work, but this one is not his best by any stretch. It is made immeasurably worse by being a full hour too long. Your opinion may differ. -

The only real differnce is that Iraq is a much larger player in ... well in everything... than Afghanistan. -

In some cases, on some reserves, in some First nations- there are problems with self government..No question. Yet you spew generalizations as if that was universal. It is not. You've been doing it here for a long time. Why? -

Saw American Sniper a couple days ago. It was OK. Lots of action, lots of closeups of Bradley Coopers penetrating gaze and forthright booyah nature. For me, too much sniper porn with many shots of the bad Iraqis getting drilled, kind of a tiresome video game. I don't mind violence in movies, but this seemed gratuitous after a while. The supporting cast- not so supportive. His wife played by Sienna Miller got tiresome quickly. The rahrah aspects are a bit surprising after previous Eastwood efforts like Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers. I'd give it 7/10. -
Looks interesting but I have a question or two. It runs on feces, large quantities are required to extract the water and feed the process. How do you get the fresh feces from open fields and trenches to the processor in large quantitities ? Remember that much of Africa and India have no infrastructure to manage this. How do you overcome widespread cultural revulsion from societies reluctant to drink their own waste?

What chaps my ass is the singling out of First Nations that are poorly run as if that is somehow representative of all 600+ of them,. It is not. The move to self-government is very new in this country, until very recenty the Feds ran every aspect of life in reserves and First Nations communities. Yet the paternalism remains, the attitude of white Canada is much more than just a colonial vestige. White governments in Quebec have been falling steadily during the corruption investigation, a couple hundred million stolen during Adscam with nobody going to jail, corruption at the highest levels of Senate, scores/hundreds of Cabinet Ministers leaving in shame over the centuries. But those dirty ungrateful Indians are the worst......they think their treaties(aka contracts) mean something.... imagine. Bad government is not restricted to white people. -
Walz has had a remarkable career lately. He spent many years making German movies and TV until he landed in Hollywood big time with Inglorious Basterds. He's won 2 Oscars for Best Supporting Actor in short order, now he is moved into leading roles. IMO Django was a pretty mediocre effort, nearly every character is a caricature and the whole thing is pretty silly. But Walz is easily the best part of it and deserves the acclaim.

So you think Canada was not involved in the Iraq war? Hahhahahaha. You need to find some new heroes, Jean Chretien is severely tainted and not just by his lies about Iraq.. http://www.globalresearch.ca/canadas-secretive-role-in-iraq/5328959 -
and to determine if the company wishes to take the risk at all. If you lie on something significant like being a public carrier while getting private car premiums ., they won't pay in the event of an accident. Policy void, you lied. Same thing if you lie about a pre existing conditon on health insurance. Lie, void. Your remedy appears to be to take an insurer to court. Screw that, I'll just get in a taxi that I think has a decent chance of having insurance. Your actions may differ. UberX doesn't give a shit about this because they are not really on the hook, none of these drivers are their employees. And I'd like to see their polciy to see what is specifically covered. Their 'excess isnurance' doesn't kick in if nothing is paid out to begin with.

BC has fewer liquor stores(with a larger population) than AB acnd according to the links has less thasn 1/2 as many products as Alberta on the shelves. If privatization has had no influence on product availability, why didn't the explosion happen before privatization? Same thing with number of stoires, there were very few of them and they were not pen much. "It works very well" No it doesn't. The only reason-only reason- BC did not go full private is because of political cowardice. They were and are frightened of the unions. That means they still have public employees paid double what private employees are paid for the very same unskilled work. There is no reason whatsoever for the charade in BC other than a complete lack of spine in Victoria. I also don't begrudge anybody making a living, it is just that there is no need at all for me to pay them. Their function is hardly a core service of government.. I do begrudge massively overpaying civil servants selling a simple commodity that can and is sold by private sector in many places. Its my money. And no, buildings used by overpaid civil servants do not make money. They cost money to design and build(by civil servants) repair(public money) and operate(public money and lots of it). This is your moment to explain how efficiently the BC govt is in managing real estate while using staff that cost so much.... take your time. Oh and let us not forget the capital cost of new buildings... none of that required. I noticed you did not speak of those fat pensions accumulating...

Again, I say, did you miss where I said there's no shortage of stupid in Ottawa and, why can't you righties imagine a world in which people that are not with you might also not be with anyone else?Partisanship is another thing that's like religion in the way it makes everything worse. Sorry, I did not realize you were in Ottawa. I just cannot relate what you say to the situation. Trudeau says something both patently stupid and a bit frightening in its naivete when sp[ewed from somebody with aspirations to lead.. A hardcore lifer partisan Liberal criticizes him for that. Nobody from 'the right' is involved in this one. Please try again but harder. -

You make no sense at all with this line. The author of the 'big deal' that points out Trudeaus latest foot-in-mouth episode is Warren Kinsella- who is a seriously hardcore Liberal . What is Kinsella- a Liberal stalwart for decades- 'revealing'? -

You got some words right: the last two. They apply to your post. Blame the Indians for the racism directed at them. It's not novel. It's not funny. And it is not surprising. What I have noticed is the very overt nature of racism against First Nations in Western Canada, though I would have named Saskatoon as the worst place. Why would this matter at all?
