  1. And Hal turned out to be an evil robot that wanted to kill people.
  2. Cybercoma hates the poor and doesn't support $30 minimum wages. Sad.
  3. I said used. Used doesn't mean a law has to be written in that language. I have friends that use mandarin, friends that use cantonese, friends that use arabic. Whatever, just let people speak what they want.
  4. The burkini ban is ridiculous. Nothing wrong with modest swimwear, and it doesn't even cover the face.

No more wet suits allowed for surfers, etc. They can freeze in the dark water.

No more unitards either, I guess. How about wearing winter clothing?

  5. But Mandarin is used in Canada, as well as many other languages. All I see are a bunch of upset language fascists complaining about nothing.
  6. We aren't even talking about some government institution. We are talking about a condo complex. I swear, you're almost as bad as the language fascists in Quebec.
  7. To make such a trivial mistake, I really have forgotten too much of my astrophysics.
  8. Perhaps not everyone speaks english either? I guess I'm just far more liberal about the usage of language. Let people speak whatever language they want.
  9. If people want to have meetings in mandarin, let them. Let people speak whatever language they want to speak. Don't be such an authoritarian control freak.
  10. This is pretty cool. Proxima Centrauri b only has a mass of 0.1 solar masses. This means it has a life time of about a trillion years. This means that humans will have a habitable area close by for nearly a trillion years after our sun goes nova and dies.
  11. Legalization of Marijuana does not go far enough. Legalize cocaine, legalize magic mushrooms, legalize crystal meth, legalize LSD, legalize exctasy, and tax it all to internalize the negative externality associated with these drugs.

@Moonlight Graham - Totally agree with you there. The streets of Ottawa for example, always smell of pot and it is ridiculously annoying.

The government will always screw up selling consumer goods. They can't even sell alcohol properly.

That smell in Ottawa was the smell of pot? I always thought that stench was fear and greed combined. Huh.

  12. I support the elimination of tariffs, but I think one should take a tit-for-tat approach. Otherwise one can in some cases make it so other countries do not have an incentive to completely eliminate their tariffs. We should unilaterally abolish supply management though.
  13. Russia wants to be a friend of the West. Unfortunately, all of the mainstream political parties in all western countries are stuck in this mentality of unnecessary hostility with Russia. But Saudi Arabia is our BFF even as they spread their Wahhabist propaganda leading to ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Queda, etc. The cold war ended. We are in a new era. The west needs to drastically change it's geopolitical orientation and what our current alliances are.
  14. Universal basic income is a better system than minimum wage.
  15. I think one of the main reasons is that women complaining about things is consistent with gender roles. Men complaining about things isn't. Men are expected to man up and quit complaining or whatever. This too.
  16. It's strongly ingrained in society that the lives of women matter more than the lives of men. This result doesn't surprise me, but is indicative of a much bigger set of problems.
  17. The temperature response to CO2 emissions used in integrated assessment models is generally unrealistic and inconsistent with general circulation models. This suggests that current optimal level of taxation is closer to $15/ton CO2 than $20/ton CO2, and the difference on global well being due to an inappropriately applied tax is $1 trillion in net present value of utility. https://judithcurry.com/2016/08/15/abnormal-climate-response-of-the-dice-iam-a-trillion-dollar-error/ Looks like an emissions path that peaks at 600 ppm CO2 and 3C above preindustrial levels is optimal.
  18. Lots of good things occurred due to the French revolution, from equal rights for jews, to decriminalization of homosexuality, to female empowerment.
  19. The British had a civil war... And Napoleon rampaging across Europe, if he actually won humanity would have been much better off. He would have united Europe, spread liberalism across the globe, and we would be much more technologically advanced today.
  20. The french revolution accomplished quite a bit.
  21. Ban circumcision (i.e. male infant genital mutilation)!

There certainly is a Circumcision thread where I can eviscerate your regrettable opinions.

Nobody would comment on the threads so he has to hijack all other status updates/threads for 'the cause'. As he once said, men in the west have it as bad as women in Saudi Arabia. Pffft.

  22. Documented by who? People with an agenda and confirmation bias? Interestingly, the European medical community tends to have quite a different view. And if an individual wants these 'medical benefits', they they can consent to it when they are old enough. Btw, there is evidence that castration leads to the medical benefit of longer life. Should it therefore be legal for parents to castrate baby boys? Or people that care about equality and/or consent.
  23. Male infant genital mutilation is wrong and should be banned. There is no consent. I'm fine with people mutilating their genitals, but only if their is consent. And it's not an extreme position. It's the moral position. The extreme position is the idea that mutilating the genitals of infants without consent is justified.
  24. "In my city, the swimming pools offer 'women only' times, and that is when the very devout females of various faiths go swimming, along with non-religious women who are just more comfortable without men in the pool." Do they offer an equivalent amount of 'men only' times? I doubt it. We all know that women only anything is far more socially acceptable than men only anything. Sexist women not wanting to swim with men? That's totally fine we need to protect them! Sexist men not wanting to swim with women? Let's laugh at the wimps.
