theloniusfleabag; You sound like a smart employer. I hope you also recognize the better more productive worker. I was reading the rules; and yes an employer can ask an employee to work the holiday and either pay him for the day twice or offer an alternative day off. Some businesses do need to require people to work. Security, some restaurants, etc; so I can understand that. I did work in an industry that needed people to work on holidays; we gave those with families Christmas off and the others got New Years off. Then either another day later on or an extra days pay for the stat that they had to work. Another way, would be to ask a non Christian worker to work the religious holiday and offer them a day that fits with their beliefs. Chines workers may prefer a day of for their New Years or Jewish employee may like a day off during Hannekah (must learn to spell that work right)

You would probably fork out the same or more under your "free market" where employees would have less benefits (I guess you mean). That money would just end up more in the "employer"'s hands.
-
What nonsense. Everyone including employers were calling labour relations to get a ruling. In this case; it would not help the employer. He would be paying for employees to sit and do nothing and it would create unhappiness in the workplace. A happy employee is a more productive employee. As for the immigrants; why they don't complain is not clear but probably it is because they don't declare the income nor pay taxes. They do know of these rights and insist on them when employed by a "Canadian" employer. Their words. All taxpayers are being ripped off by these employer/employees not paying their fair share of taxes.

That you have right Tawasakm; too many on this forum don't believe or care about this truth. They just want to kiss and make up so the USA will "like us" Unless, we are willing to and insist upon standing up for Canadian values not what the USA would have us do; how do we expect to have any international respect or self respect. Doing so, may bring us short time pain but I believe will bring long term gains. That does not mean that we should never agree with the USA; but when we have a different opinion or view point; we must stand firm for what the majority of Canadians believe in.

There does seem to be an attempt by many employers/ organizations to destroy or remove our labour standardss. I work in the downtown area in an office tower complex. Two large corporations that control and own many towers tried to push small business owners to forego the extra days off to compensate employees for Christmas and boxing day. Another smaller Calgary based business owner whose stores are not usually open on the weekends; informed his employees that they would not be paid for Christmas or New years as they fell on the weekend. From talking to immigrant employees working for immigrant employers down town; I have found that most do not pay holiday pay, over time, nor for statutory holidays. Some work under the table and do not pay taxes, EI, or CPP. This is unfair to the employees and other businesses that observe the labour laws. Why are there not more inspectors enforcing our local legal labour stands????? We have won this round this year for the days off but is this a growing trend????

So what; if it is transferable; there would still be more employed and paying into our tax coffers. It still is a completely different industry; it requires more precision and expertise. I am not an expert in this field (or even that knowledgeable) but with dampness and salt water; things must be used with a higher corrosion tolerance;better seals and I do know that the painting does require much more salt water resistance and resistance to barnacle or so that it does not get easily damged or removed when cleaning off barnacle. It still means that more in the industry would be employed. That is not a myth. More experienced workers and more projects to demonstrate to buyers their expertise. However, this is bringing the thread way off topic; so final response from me regarding this off shoot discussion.

That my dear child does not constitute a personal attack. Don't bother reminding me of anything. I don't need your views Just keep to the topic ok

It is not a myth; it is fact. It is just plain facts and common sense.

The original students question. There are not that many posts here to confuse you. Having a bad day???

We will never even know what their bid would have been. When we spend our government money here in BC; we have much of it returned by way of taxes paid by the company and the workers. It cuts unemployment; so less welfare or EI. We lost money from the federal government which is given when buying Canadian plus we pay the federal government import taxes. The quality of boat foreign vs domestic is again unknown but buying domestic would mean parts and repairs would be available quicker with knowledgeable help to fix problems with less down time for the ship. We would have promoted a local industry rather than dissing it like this government has done.

"They" don't hate our freedoms after all
caesar replied to Black Dog's topic in The Rest of the World
yeah, sad but true. And people thought the Liberal's used fear. They were amateurs and more honest than the fear mongering utilized by Bush and the Republicans. -
When you said "we" are you an American and mean the USA ; If you are Canadian; The USA did not try to push us around to follow their lead back then. We were still British subjects not "Canadians"
-
We often feel that we in BC get the short end of the stick from the feds but I don't think anyone seriously wants us to leave Canada. Nor do we want any of our ppresent provinces to leave despite those who would rather pack it in and go on their own. We need the full country to get their act togather and work as one unit to make any mark on the world or to improve our trading relations with others,
-
Well choke; the world doesn't revolve around you. It is not your job to decide if I or any other poster is off topic. We have an excellent moderator on the forum. Your services are not needed.
-
So you would have us sink to third world standards. Gee thanks a lot. We need to work towards improving standards in those countries. There is plenty of extra profit at the top for CEO's; Cut cost where these is lots of fat; at the top.
-
Not thread jacking; just stating your logic and compassion in all areas is very lacking in logic and compassion. We sure can; we pay enough in taxes and premiums, already. Health care is more important than some stupid road to a ski hill or a fancy train system to the airport. Rav could have been done much more cost effective going down Arbutus corridor. Why should all BCers pay for the expensive risky Olympics. If the government would quit sending all the jobs out of country; perhaps we would have more people working and contributing to our tax base. Those foreign workers doing government work and building our ferries will not be paying taxes to the BC government.
-
Well choke; we all know where your "logic" lies. Kill Iraqis so they don't suffer from sanctions. You would probably like to kill off the seniors that built this country and paid for the infrastructures you take for granted. Grow up.
-
They haven't got rid of universal health care??????? Sure put a big dint in it. We don't have access to healthcare in a reasonable time in this province( despite the increase in health care premiums and the downgrades hospital services) unless you pay for the services privately or are a politician. How many people did they kick off welfare/ how many handicapped or disabled were told to PROVE they can't work??? How many seniors are paying huge sums for their prescriptions now. They could not have done all those things if they wish to get transfer payments from the federal government. They did as much as they could. Cuts to womens and children's services that brought a chiding from the UN

Dutch Consider Forced Use Of Dutch in Religious
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You may not have singled them out; this thread has. The base is too broad and must not be used to spy on a whole religion. We do not need the "Big Brother" attitude here. There ARE the same situations in all religions. So called Christians (Of which I am one) have many fanatical groups. You may monitor the fanatics but don't allow it to spread as an excuse to spy on a whole religion. We don't want to lose our democratic rights or freedoms here in Canada. To include a complete religion is discrimination pure and simple. -
Bush asks Canadians to support U.S. puppet govt.
caesar replied to MapleBear's topic in Canada / United States Relations
It can be proven illegal but as the UN foolishly allowed the USA to be exempt from prosecution for war crimes it really doesn't matter; does it. -
Dutch Consider Forced Use Of Dutch in Religious
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Our problems with Mr Bush are more far reaching than Iraq and American aggression. We have serious trade issues where the Americans do not observe accepted fair international agreements. It constantly abuses its use of the veto at the UN and is very reluctant to pay its dues. So did Saddam; see where that got him. The USA has many questionable allies such as Pakistan. Pakistan did and oes have many al qaeda terrorists and terrorist training camps. It condoned its scientists selling nuclear technologie and parts to rogue nations. Why did the USA remain silent and not condemn this action???? Instead, they rewarded Pakistan by making it a favoured ally; allowed to buy more modern American weaponry (to sell to these rogue nations????) As for "SPIN" that comes strongly form the USA government sources, too. To single out one religion for concern is prejudicial and not the Canadian way. I do agree; that there are radical religious groups that need to be watch. But they come in EVERY faith; Christian, Jewish, as well as the Muslims. Most Muslims are no different that the rest of us. We have a very international community here in Vancouver and generally we all get along except for radicals from all walks of life and religions. To single out one for "observation" is discriminatory and not acceptable in Canada. -
Bush asks Canadians to support U.S. puppet govt.
caesar replied to MapleBear's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Some are; as you can see by the posters on this forum. The majority are not. As for the spineless government; that may be a problem. Since the majority of Canadian did not support this unwise, badly timed, illegal invasion of Iraq based on bogus information; I think PM PM will think twice before throwing his full support behind any Bush influenced government in Iraq. However, elections in Iraq are supposed to come next month. We will watch and see how that is handled. -

I do believe; that something along those lines has been offered/ requested and under serious consideration. -

caesar replied to MapleBear's topic in Canada / United States Relations
"Insurgents" or freedom fighters? All depends on your point of view. If a bunch of foreigners came and took over your country; would you not fight back. Plus, some of these are foreign terrorists that have come to Iraq to fight the American aggression. More support would have gone to a government set up by the UN which included Arab Nations support. -

A good portion of our problems are caused by Bush. Worry about your own country
