That is the "commercial" Christmas that you are referring to. We could all do with a little less of that. Christmas should mean more than spending money. (The four days off is my favorite) What August was referring to I believe; is that we are being encouraged NOT to wish anyone a Merry Christmas; we are told that it should be seasons greetings so as not to offend those of a different religion or background. Politically correct nonsense. Most of my friends and aquaintances that do not celebrate Christmas have no problem with me wishing them a Merry Christmas; nor do I have a problem with wishing them a happy Hanukkah or gung hay fat choy, etc I even put up a hanukkah bear at my shop.

That is great. Perhaps Bush did us a favour and gave us a wake up call with his bad attitude towards Canada. We needed to spread our trading around not just depend on one country for our economic status. Besides helping to modernize China is a better way to bring a large country up to more western standards of living and hopefully lead to a more democratic country of their own choosing. Not one forced down their throats by foreign devils. eh

Yes, I was reading the New York paper. Seems the Americans are getting worried that Canada could find a very willing market for our oil in China. Canada is the major supplier of oil to the USA. Perhaps that is why Bush has been making a show of being more civil to Canada these days.

That's about right. We were all shocked when he didn't get up. Live it was quick and simple except for the dogpile. That is why they have a third man in usually given a harsher penalty; as it makes any fighting much more prone to serious injury. In this instance; it was a Colorado player and they didn't call a penalty on him. Without his involvement; things may not have gone so badly. Bertuzzi elicited negative publicity from the press who resent him for never talking to them; particularly about his personal life. The fractured vertabrae became a broken neck (technically correct but certainly paints another picture) The concussion is now "brain damage" again technically correct but again paints a more serious picture. Naslund accepted his injuries without complaint and played injured without whining. Steve Moore until recently seemed more intent on a civil suit than in whether he would fully recover. In fact, instead they immediately started saying "that he may never play again" always a possibility but not usually a fact that is consider publically until it is likely to be a fact. Granato should never have sent him on the ice with the way the game was going. Did he send him as a sacrifice in the hopes of getting a Canuck star suspended???

Merry Christmas to all. Happy New Years or as my dad would say Happy Hogmanay Eve

That's part of why hockey players get the big bucks; they do get injured; lose their teeth, etc, I would imagine that they have coverage under the NHL to compensate them when injured on the job. Moore is not a little guy. He has a least a foot on the only player he would fight (Brad Cooke). Granato should never have put him on the ice when the game went as bad as it did. However, the whole incident would not have happened if Moore had shown any respect for Naslund after he injured him. He just said he would do it again. Naslund had a serious wrist injury that he played with without complaint besides the concussion.

Of Course 'Kemosabe' Used To Discriminate
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Give us a break. If she didn't like being called kemosabe; she should have said so. It is in no way racist; it meant friend in the original source nothing derogatory. She just wanted an excuse to quit. Unless, they persisted in calling her a name she didn't like; she has nothing to cry about. -
Give me a break. Once they make the money they do not need our extra help. It is about time that they started supporting themselves/

Whether the hit on Naslund was legal/ dirty or not; Moore expressed NO regret at having seriously injured Naslund. Naslund is not one of the players that tries to deliver hard checks. Bertuzzi did not use a "weapon" Let's be honest; there is fighting in hockey because the fans love and demand a fight. The crowd really comes alive even with a minor fight. Fights sell tickets. It is not just a hockey players decision or adrenaline rush that promotes fighting.
-
You all seem to ignore the Colorado player on Bertuzzi'a Back driving them into the ice. He was swinging his fist, too and probably hit Moore more times that he hit Bertuzzi. It didn't look at all like they show on tv; the same little bit over and over and over. It was not a surprise to Moore; 20 thousand fans were elling for his head. Moore showed no remorse or express any regret over the severe concussion and the wrist injury he gave to Naslund. Moore is not a great hockey player; he is more the enforcer type; injuring or intimidating others. I was at the game.

It is just doing what we believe to be the fair thing. How about how the American government likes to tick us off. Clean up their own backyard and homegrown terrorists. This is not one sided. Let them deal fairly and under international rules in trade and foreign affairs; then we can talk.

who cares, get back on the subject.

Nope, that is west Van close but West Van is more snooty and rich. They don't like old folks in seniors residences sitting outside as they are a blight to their view.

Maple would only be happy if we working people paid even higher taxes until we were poor and gave the bulk of our earnings to those who choose not to work. He/she wants too much for too many. The only way most people who are unemployed due to substance abuse, alcoholism is when they decide to pull up their own bootstraps. We should be there with available counselling and treatment centers. Those who think they are too good to start off at minimum wage; need a kick in the seat. Low income workers should be assisted with child care, health care and bus passes to enable them to start work without going further in the hole. We should only support those whose physical or mental health makes employment a non viable option. We need to give them more so that they can have a decent existence. People with mental problems need more structured halp and alittle less freedom to chose their own paths. Civil rights need not apply to those unable to make a informed decision; relatives should be allowed to ensure that they get the required medical and living help they need to survive and stop allowing them to wander the streets harassing and threatening others.

Should Richmond, BC Have English Signs?
caesar replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I wouldn't have a problem with a small mom and pop neighbourhood shop having only Chinese signs but these are large shopping malls and this is Canada. Our languages is officially English and French. English is no longer a majority language here in the greater Vancouver area. When people immigrate to Canada and seek citizenship; they are no longer Chinese or Koreans; they are Canadians and should learn rhe Canadian language(s). I understand the older people who come to join their families may not be able to learn so easily. However, many come to Canada and educate their children in schools that teach in their old homeland's language, only. Do they really want to be Canadians? -
Battle of the Bulge Anniversary
caesar replied to theloniusfleabag's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Of course the fresh troops and arms from America were a great help but our Canadian troops and British troops did a remarkable job. The USA did not win the war for us; we all won together. Without their help; the war would have gone on much longer. -

Why should I not use them and us. Why repeat Asian and English speaking persons over and over. It is clumsy and not the way we speak normally. Why should we be overly sensitive and politically correct all the time. The Asians don't tip toe around us. A friend and fellow shopkeep is Korean; she wouldn't even go and see her new born granddaughter because its mother was not Korean. Her son married a non Korean girl. This is their second child. The husband said the little boy finally won their hearts but it took quite a while. These people are very nice people but still they do not want to mix with the others not of their own race. I don't judge them but I do feel sorry for their daughter in law and grandchidren and their son, too. Gradually they are learning to accept his decision. I wouldn't be upset or unhappy if my son married a girl not of our race or religion; my concern would be that they were happy together and treated each other well and gave me lots of grandchildren. -

Generally, I would agree but this is getting to be too large in Richmond and could lead to another large special interest group. We would be in big trouble as English speaking Canadian if we refused to serve someone because of their race; however, this is getting to be very common in the Asian stores and some restaurants. Why should they be allowed to refuse us service because of our race. I went to a local restaurant (IN Vancouver) it was early in the evening, no one was in the restaurant except lots of staff and they just completely ignored us. I have since watched and have notice that there is never any caucasiand in the restaurant. We left and went where we would be served. They would scream racism if we refused to serve them; why should they think it is okay to refuse us service. -

I am racist because I would like to keep Canada a bilingual country. We have our hands full with problems now with two languages. The only other that have rights to speaking their own language would be our first nation people here in Canada. People who immigrate here should be encouraged to learn our language if they wish to live in Canada and be Canadians. We pay enough money for programs of ESL programs. They should come here to join in our country whose languages are English and French. I do not deny them any rights to speak theri own language just that they should be encouraged and expect to learn our local languages if they wish to become Canadian citizens. They should not come to Canada if they are not willing to become true Canadians and accept our languages and show loyalty to their new country. If they wish to carry on with their former languages and politics; stay where they were. We don't need more divisions in this country. I do advocate that we Canadians should learn Chinese languages in that it may be needed if one wishes to work in commerce and trade with China. -

We are not talking about the road signs. It is is the shop signs in the large Asian Malls. Some of these shopkeepers refuse service to non Asians. -
Why do we treat dictatorships with respect?
caesar replied to Argus's topic in The Rest of the World
Sounds like the American controlled prisons in Iraq and Cuba. Have you been to Cuba; or you just believe everything the USA government tells you. Indira Ghandi was at one point considered a "dictator" and she was supported by Mother Teresa. -

Racist my butt. Get a life. The shops and many shopkeepers there are racist. You don't have to be white to be racist. -

caesar replied to Argus's topic in The Rest of the World
Well, you would be wrong many times. Some dictators are not all that bad; in fact many I prefer to Bush. I believe that Castro for one is quite well liked in Cuba. -
Trucks are limited to which streets they can use, etc within the city limits. As for the highways; they are considering allowing commercial trucks to use the HOV lanes. I think the big problem is more with gravel trucks that do not come up to the standards as do the big rigs. They often are involved in accidents and found to be not up to standards mechanically.
