I watched Poilievre responding to Trump's tariffs and accusing him of stabbing Canada in the back and thought good on him. But less than a half a minute later he's bleating away about killing the carbon tax and doing everything else everyone is already talking about. Building pipelines, inter-provincial trade and yes axing the tax. These will be old news before he's even elected he's so far behind the curve.

That said, stock markets didn't tank until now because people simply thought tariffs and making everything more expensive for Americans was so stupid it was just Trump being Trump doing his art-of-the-deal shtick. So assuming he's a stable albeit the most Machiavellian genius since Machiavelli, one possible motive for causing pain to Americans is to precipitate a domestic economic crisis that he'll blame Canada for and use it as a pretext for annexing us. The other thing that comes to mind is that Trump is aware of the fact he'll never be the richest man in Earth so instead he's aiming to be the most powerful.
