  1. Yeah well, 14% is what the government says it is. Indepenent analysis showed it averaged out at about 5 it think. There are also other issues with contamination in the mine. Google it, you'll find all sorts of info from independent analysis. Hardly anyone with an exemption from HC buys the government schwag. Which begs the question - where is it going?
  2. HOLY! Maybe you should chill out a bit. First off, my intention was not to be rude, but to let you know a 'couple' courses do not an expert make, you were the one who stated that YOU had taken them - so your claim there is fair game. Now, as far as the documentary went the information provided was very well researched by those in their own particular field - it also points out quite clearly that the myriad of scientists involved and whose research was used for the IPCC report did not actually reach a clear consensus. That demonstrates the politiziation of science - which is NEVER a good thing. Now, I'm not interested in doing your homework for you. Or for others so your little assignment to me will be ignored. I will however respond to a few of your original statements which I did say I would comment on later - maybe you should have waited eh? I have a life outside of this little place and did tell you I would write more later after gardening. Impatient are you? Prone to jumping to conclusions? Chill. Now, you keep harping on CO2, fine. But you make a big mistake in your mention of the permafrost layer. The 'danger' there is that methane will be released. Methane is about forty times more efficient in heat retention than CO2. How much of the permafrost will melt? IMO pretty much as last interglacial event. How much methane will be produced is really anyone's guess as the variables involved are pretty arbitrary and dependent on many different factors. Even among climate scientists who advocate an anthroprogenic cause to the perceived warming trends there is great debate - yet ALL do certainly take into account the Earth's natural cycles - all of them. It is simplistic to say the least that one can blame ALL things on CO2 (which by the way if far more of a threat to our oceans in abundance, than our atmosphere). As a scientist. or science student you must realise the importance of being impartial and asking a balanced careful question when forming a hypothesis. Diligence is required so not to taylor one's proposition to what one desires the outcome to be. This is not easy, as most of us want to see our own hypothesis proved to be correct! But, nevertheless that is what science is all about. WRT Sunspot activities, of course they are cyclical - and there is much about the sun and her behaviour which we are only beginning to understand. Can they influence our climate? I think anyone who thinks they don't is a complete fool! How exactly is still up for debate - since it is all a very new field of research and our own technology is just in its infancy. So, I haven't a clue what is bugging you there! Now, if you are really interested in this topic, which I btw find fascinating from a geological point of view, then I would suggest in all honesty and best intentions to take a couple courses about paleoclimates, about how the actual science is done to recreated past events. This is important because many of the models we use to determine future scenarios are 'checked' against the geological knowns. Thus, they are of huge consequence to truly understand the degree of which humans are influencing the enviroment wrt climate. That's it for now. Let's continue in a civilised manner okay? Respectfully, Buffy
  3. Slavik, get a few more courses under your belt then come back and talk some more. Have you heard of the Milankovitch Cycles? Do a good course on Quarternary Geology and Paleoclimates - you might have a different outlook on things. I'll add more later to your thread - I just don't have the time now and need to tend my garden! But... keep in mind that the Earth System, as a whole is something which still leaves much to be understood.
  4. Health Canada 1500% mark up on Cannabis OTTAWA (CP) - The federal government charges patients 15 times more for certified medical marijuana than it pays to buy the weed in bulk from its official supplier, newly released documents show. Critics say it's unconscionable to charge that high a markup to some of the country's sickest citizens, who have little income and are often cut off from their medical marijuana supply when they can't pay their government dope bills. Records obtained under the Access to Information Act show that Health Canada pays $328.75 for each kilogram of bulk medical marijuana produced by Prairie Plant Systems Inc. The company currently has a $10.3-million contract with Health Canada, which expires at the end of September, to grow standardized medical marijuana in an abandoned mine shaft in Flin Flon, Man. Health Canada, in turn, sells the marijuana to a small group of authorized users for $150 - plus GST - for each 30-gram bag of ground-up flowering tops, with a strength of up to 14 per cent THC, the main active ingredient. That works out to $5,000 for each kilogram, or a markup of more than 1,500 per cent. "It's impossible for a person on disability," said Ron Lawrence, 38, a burn victim in Windsor, Ont., who needs medical marijuana to control severe pain. "The sickest people are the ones that need it the most . . . they're the ones who don't work." ************* This is one article I found wrt Hellth Canada's mark up of their crappy schwag weed.
  5. I've heard you boast this before. Though it seems that your take is somewhat tilted: "Things came to a head in March 2004, when the National Post published a front page story proclaiming, "CBC Web site bars use of word 'Jewish.'" Frustrated web staff had added the word to the filter list after a deluge of anti-Semitic comments. But an American lawyer and site user complained, noting that his comments were blocked while offensive ones using "Juwish" or "rabid Zionist" were not. (In reality, posts containing “trigger” words were held in a queue for a moderator to review before posting, but to the user it looked like the posts were being rejected.)" One thing I have noticed on other forums, often a troll will come and post really horrid stuff to shut down honest conversation - usually they are 'working' for the other side, ie sort of a false flag. I have seen you do this here too - with snippets such as 'Israel must be a terrible place to live etc.) Taken out of context those posts only add to a misconception (that you are anti-jewish) - which clearly you aren't, but the post is offensive anyway. Oddly it's you who did it. Is this how you operated on the CBC boards? Anyways - the post, the sun, the star the mop and pail are all pretty much the same IMV - none give nearly the background needed to form real opinions and all are big on propoganda. Good to scan them all, keeping in mind the narrow ownership of big media in Canada.
  6. Here is a very good interview with Yanar Mohammed: "In 2003, Mohammed founded the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), which shelters Iraqi women targeted in honor killings and sectarian violence (both on the rise since the war and occupation). It also monitors women in jail and assists formerly detained women, such as prostitutes. And, most visibly, OWFI speaks out loudly and insistently for women’s legal rights and secular law in opposition to Iraq’s growing Islamism. Her demands shed light on the precarious position of women under radical Islamism but, perhaps more to the question at hand, they confirm the disastrous consequences of the Iraq war and the political repercussions of occupation, which, according to Mohammed, has unleashed militant fundamentalism that is proving impossible to subdue." http://www.uruknet.info/?p=m32568&hd=&size=1&l=e Amy DePaul: Tell me about the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq. Yanar Mohammed: OWFI was founded by a few Iraqi women who decided to have a voice. We were sure the future government would not be a woman-friendly one. From the first day our policy was to try to gain support from outside Iraq. We got help from Canadian, European and U.S. supporters. We formed in 2003, and spoke about full equality. We represent the modern, secular voice of Iraq that will not allow this country to be turned into another Afghanistan under the Taliban. *** click on link above for entire article*** It's an informative interview which illustrates the backward turn wrt women's rights and treatment under the US occupation of Iraq. I'm surprised no one here already posted this.
  7. McGovern has a pretty good take on Tenet here: http://www.antiwar.com/mcgovern/?articleid=10893 Funny, how these feelings about Tenet seem to cross all the 'false' left right paradigms. WRT Perle, there aren't too many that are a nasty as he is. I don't think there is much difference of opinion on him from moderates on all sides of the fences either.
  8. May is finished. That was a really stupid thing to say. She was annoying in her former incarnation as well. IMO as soon as she was declared leader of the Greens they lost me completely. That said, the conservatives can stop whining about it now - the point was made. Suck it up and do some real governing. Silly distraction, rise above it and all that. If they can.
  9. I can't stand Glen Beck, however I might give this a look at - providing he keeps his trap shut for a long enough period. Another video, dicussed in a couple of threads here is The Great Global Warming Swindle. It is very well done and not at all partisan politically. We'll see how long I can tolerate GB. IMO it's very important to see this issue in a non-partisan manner. Science should never be about politics, and sadly in the case of man-made global warming that is all that the supporting 'science' is: politics. Anyway, thanks for the heads up since I don't watch much tele and would have missed it otherwise. No promises wrt Beck though.
  10. Hi Betsy, did you happen to see "The Great Global Warming Swindle'? Very well done! It also illustrates it matters not which party is in power - the 'swindle' works equally well for all. Though, I must agree that GW is NOT the threat it is made out to be.
  11. I am wondering whether anyone actually read the entire piece in the OP. WRT the 'charges' - he was exhonerated - ie he DIDN'T do it. So, is the REAL fuss here simply because he called a spade a spade? Heavens!! A man who voices his opinion! Goodness me! I can't get over the sidetracking of this thread. Really - can anyone answer this: How come, when ANYONE says anything remotely critical (even if it is true) about Israel's policies that they are immediately branded 'anti-israel'?? BTW - still waiting for some kind of real definition of that!!
  12. Thank you ScottSA, it is really well done! Reminded me of my fav. prof back in my uni days. Highly recommended for all to see!
  13. Greenhouse effect is a myth, scientists say excerpt: "Their argument will be outlined on Channel 4 this Thursday in a programme called The Great Global Warming Swindle raising major questions about some of the evidence used for global warming." I would love to see this, too bad I don't get Brit TV. While I do certainly agree that our environment and OUR impact on it is of prime importance, I have severe reservations about the whole 'Global Warming' hysteria. That is not to say that we shouldn't decrease our reliance of fossil fuels - but IMO this gorilla in the room is simply distracting from the even larger dinosaur already present in the form of far worse pollutants. It is misguided to say the least and damaging to other environmental concerns (water contamination being one). I wonder if this will be available online.
  14. Poly, has there ever been a building which has collapsed into it's own footprint outside of CD being performed?
  15. This should be a poll question. I would vote for 'not appropriate'. For what I believe are obvious conflict of interest reasons (among others). May as well let the foxes guard and run the henhouse. Police and military should be kept at an arms length from any kind of politics. Anyways, it's not like they already don't have a huge lobby.
  16. Some of the above posts clearly illustrate why any kind of real debate over Israel's GOVERNMENT's behaviour is impossible in NA. Anything critical of Israel's policies in the Occupied Territories or her Foriegn policy in general, is simply greated by the cry of "Anti-Israel' (read -> antisemite). Let's face it - Israel HAS been caught doing some VERY questionable things. That does not negate that her nieghbours - or anyone else for that matter - doesn't also engage in questionable activities. No country should be beyond reproach and sadly when debate turns to Israel, the double standard rings loud and clear. Now, wrt this candidate, it's his opinion and certainly can be proven true for a myriad of circumstances and situations - even many Israelis would agree with him. So what's the problem? You don't have to agree. Oh and as for the Liberals being anti-Israel - (whatever that actually means) that is a big laugh! It was under the Liberal government that Canada's policy wrt the Israeli/Palestinian conflict took a definitively sharp PRO-Israel stance. Oh and BTW I would love to hear a really good definition as to what exactly is 'Anti-Israel'. If it's simply hating all things Israeli for no justified reason then it could be bigotry - however if it is simply refering to any kind of criticism of Israeli policies then you would have to include alot of Israelis in the anti crowd! Let's face it simply being critical and asking questions over policy issues and administrative behaviours is not anti anything - it's called being responsible in one's civic duties.
  17. How can Perle's whereabouts be confirmed? Not sure about Tenet, he may well be mistaken - or lying, it's not like he hasn't lied before. However, that also doesn't mean that Perle himself is not a liar and biased individual. In fact Perle is a pretty slimy guy along with the rest of the PNAC crew. No one ever said the Dems were any better than the Repulicans. Both parties are rife with corruption. All these fake divisions sure do serve a purpose in continuing an 'us vs them' mentality though.
  18. To be honest Betsy I don't. The Liberals were no better in their enviromental postions than what the present day Conservatives are (note: they are NOT the conservatives of the past). So, to be frank there is no partisanship when we are dealing with something so fundamental to all human life. It is only demeaning it when petty political points are attempting to be scored by sadly delusional folk, called politicians.
  19. come off it - they knew. So is anyone here going to do anything about it? Eh? Write a letter perhaps? make a phonecalll? What? No? huh..... okies So why bother even talking about it in purely partisan drivel? Don't you realize the whole left vs right paradigm is pure propoganda? Sleeptime is over, time to wake up.
  20. Betsy, though I agree Suzuki leaves much to be desired - are you a partisan hack?
  21. You see, this is the problem with those who think they've solved all of their problems when they reject their parents faith and or church. They think they can answer the enigma of religion and God for ALL of mankind, all based on their singular experience. Like I said, get some time in kid. This I find interesting. My parents were the ones to not subscribe me and my sister into any kind of religion. We basicly were just taught right from wrong. Did not go to church never said we were Christians, or Catholics. So in a way in contributed to me and my sister being agnostic/athiests. Religion was needed in a time to have something more to beleive in. But you just need to beleive in yourself and no one else. I keep saying I look at religion as an outsider, for I really have no clue what it does for everyone, but I can get an idea of what it is. But never really knowing it. For the most part, I have no interest in knowing. Fearmongers who use Radical Islam as a weapon to frighten the masses are just as freakin guilty of wrecking the world. Crap, like there is not enough stress in one day for anyone. Got kids?? Pfff the stress on that alone is hard. Tough job? Bad Marriage? Court cases? Ect? No food to eat? These are all stresses many go through. So the thing about terrorism is really not on the high list of things to worry about. Keep laying those stresses on a society and EVERYONE snaps. THEY ARE GONNA KILL YOU. Give up some rights. Ect. Radical Islam has stolen nothing from you. Not one thing. You let them take it away from you. So who really is wrecking the world? Or more specificly, who really is wrecking YOUR world? great post - thanks
  22. knock knock knock ... Is there anybody in there?
  23. None of this is a partisan issue - when will folk wake the heck up? ...
  24. what the hell happened to this thread? Sorry folks but ALL so called religions have their extremists - the Fundamentalist Christians, the Ultra Zionist Jews, the Jihad Desiring Muslims - it DOES NOT MATTER! Don't any of you see that this infighting is exactly what fuels the divisions between people? It is really sad to see this happen amongst a group of so called educated folk. One would think that Satan is afoot...
