  1. absolutely. Nothing makes any sense.
  2. and who is it in Canada I should be consistent with?
  3. Probably exactly what was said in 2003 when the Turks, at the last minute, refused to allow the US 3rd (or was it the 5th?) corps to invade Iraq from Turkey ... i.e.: Turks don't let anyone dictate to them
  4. i think you're right. The whole ISIS edifice is constructed on sand.
  5. I don't agree. The Turks have lotsa balls. This wasn't the first Ruski penetrating Turkish airspace, and the Russians didn't take Turkish protests seriously then since they have continued to bomb Turkish proxy's just over turkish borders. So the turks put a missile into one as soon as they had a legitimate chance. Now Putin will listen.
  6. Another case in point: I am an avowed socialist and I am the shamefaced recipient of 6 warning points. I suspect that any warning points you have received have absolutely nothing to do with your betrayal of mankind.
  7. People get to believe whatever the hell they want to believe. It is not criminal to believe something. In this country we go out of our way to ensure that people get to believe whatever the want and are not punished for doing so. If, however, anyone's actions could run afoul of the law - without regard to what the belief is that drove the action. In fact its perfectly fine in this country to hold radical beliefs. What isn't fine is breaking laws, the state don't give a damn about your beliefs when that line is crossed - and shouldn't.
  8. Just like all Canadians then. Thats a good thing that if they become Canadians they get all the things that other Canadians get....even full on Canadians, or perhaps non-full on Canadians maybe.
  9. ...and George Lemaire .Catholic Priest, Astronomer and first to conceive the concept of the Expanding Universe (the Big Bang). except that he wasn't a nut.
  10. I'm still waiting for the release of the long delayed Gays Gone Wild video. Nevertheless to claim that the USofA's Democratic party is Marxist, or the AFL-CIO is Marxist , is plainly in the realm of trolling.
  11. Just had an older kid show up in Halloween teen garb (overcoat and some black around the eyes - very feeble) Not with a bag but an actual shopping cart! an immigrant certainly! No Canadian Values

It was a bit scary at my house last night. Not so much the costumes. But several 8 year olds all gunned up and frenzied on sugar rushes..... don't make eye contact....just give em the goodies and get that door closed..

No frost on the West Coast yet... at least not at sea level.

  15. I like all of those PF albums. The truth of the matter is I chose The Wall instead of Wish You Were Here. Actually almost every item on my list was different. Then I considered the OP requirements: A little Wiki informed me that The Wall came out later than my growing up and into adulthood phase. So being a 70's kid - what did I listen to all the time? So edited the post and my selections. April Wine almost made the list! April Wine for goddsake... Edit: Forgot the most important part: When I checked wiki for production years I then saw Wish You Were Here. O F**K YA! Right! how could I forget?
  16. I agree. A great bit by Coyne. He is right on the money.
  17. Absolutely. I think that if they had managed to somehow control the vitriol and outright nastiness of their attitudes (even while continuing to dump their nasty policies on the country!) they would have won this election.
  18. I quote CRS's post on this bilingualism side-track: So, in the past Parliament voted on the matter and made it so and justifies it today. Do you see the relationship between what happened in the past has bearing on today? Things that happened in the past have a HUGE influence on what happens today. Thus the stink about citizenship oaths for example; or the Magna Carta; or Marriage; or anything else to do with society.
  19. Point of Order : As you pointed out earlier senior positions in government can only be held by those who speak French and English. A unilingual French speaker would be as unqualified for the position as a unilingual English speaker.
  20. And how is that different from any, or more accurately, all other canadian governments of the past? I will burst your bubble by mentioning that your idea is not new nor original. It's an old idea - very old. Probably as old as Parliamentary democracy itself.

  22. Cite?
  23. Same here!
  24. Ok, I'll do that.
  25. It is a legally meaningless ritual. The documents that are signed, however, are very meaningful things. Should someones citizenship come into question do you suppose that the powers that be will rely on functionaries remembering whether that specific person was there on the day he said they were? Many years later perhaps? The only thing that matters is the signed document and the confirmation by the functionaries that the person who signed the document was indeed the person they claim to be. The actual ceremony itself is very nice and people taking the oath certainly appreciate it and will hopefully have warm memories everlasting of the event. I certainly do not want to end the ceremony. But one must admit that the government could conceivably forgo the ceremony entirely and have potential citizens come on down to the local courthouse, or just some Notary somewhere, have their ID checked, swear the oath and sign the papers. Done deal.
