One is an aberration (maybe), many is a pattern: objective and factual. The United States has entered a volatile period in politics and cannot be considered a reliable partner. Why Canada? Because he thinks he can throw his weight around and bully others into submission to whatever whims and fantasies of the day. This is not what leaders are (just forget it, done) and one can have partners of the kind only to constant and ongoing trouble. Only for the objective record, the previous administration didn't show much leadership either: leaders are not normally dragged in the end of pack, clawing and holding until at all possible. So this is not a random aberration: a consistent and systemic failure of will, reason and intelligence.

The second time a major trade agreement ripped in less than a decade. America is no longer a reliable partner and cannot get her act together. It's turning into a narcissist bully who every so often and on every pretext will seek to punish her partners for the problems of her own making. No rational basis for cooperation. Just too bad.

Mark Carney: "it's the second time, in less than a decade that the US, in effect, ripped up a trade agreement with its closest trading partner". It's a pattern, it's factual and official: America is no longer a reliable trade partner. Canada cannot build long term prosperity on expectations of an understanding with a narcissist bully. That idea just doesn't work in our common lives, and in relationships between countries.

Mark Carney: "it's the second time, in less than a decade that the US, in effect, ripped up a trade agreement with its closest trading partner". The time has changed, it's factual and official: America is not a reliable partner. It has entered a zone of volatility and cannot be trusted as much as before.

Ironically, the levels of immigration in the recent years in proportion to the population are probably unseen anywhere in Europe. EU is a community of nations, not a single government. The powers and responsibilities of EU bureaucracy are limited by the constitution and the checks are very real in this case not just written into a two century old book. OK one option that isn't logical and darn right risky is pretend that nothing much is happening while the time has factually moved on. U.S. is no longer a reliable partner and will not be for a while, it's the reality that is right before our eyes. Will Canada strike it out on her own, in this new world? Can it?

It's a fact that U.S. has become a volatile neighbor and a logical conclusion that the situation cannot improve reliably in the medium to long-term future. Canada and the free world need to ponder these facts seriously and think forward. It's impossible to satisfy an self-centered narcissist who every day invents new reasons and ways how the world wronged them. Again, this just isn't possible. Doesn't work. We have to look for and find more stable partners and relationships.

Trump's maronic tariffs, bizarre and illogical is one indication that everything said isn't only a theory or warning but is in fact, happening before our eyes. This irrational volatility will not somehow fix itself magically but will only get worse as every new populist administration would look for and find ways to beat the previous one by unpredictability and chaos. The U.S. may be lost to the free world for a long while. And the rest of it should take in and reflect on the message very seriously. Democracy is not free. It takes thinking, care, responsibility and act of involved citizens. Most importantly, keeping big money out of public politics and maintaining and reaffirming the line between objective truth and lies.

The entropy works one way. Once a system got unhinged and broken, it can be extremely hard for it to return back to good functional condition: it just doesn't happen. Politicians can voice impossible hopes, keep their heads in the sand or ar$es but it won't change the fact of nature: a decaying body cannot simply recover. It has to be treated, intelligently, effectively and often, in an intensive care. And from these observations, follows a direct, logical conclusion: the U.S. is leaving the field of contemporary democracy for a long time, possibly for good. Next election will fix nothing. Precedents have been created and the next ones can only be worse. But where is worse if subverting an election has become an acceptable standard, Maduro and Belarus way? That is something democratic world has to come to terms with, rather than creating impossible illusions. And a dire warning to the only two democracies that still use binary politics: the clock is ticking. Binary politics, extreme partisanship will undermine and destroy democracy. Not if, not even when, but how many cycles left.

Liberals decide to import Russian oil

I did and it said nothing about Liberals decision to import sanctioned oil. What a mystery. -
The script with the politicians and diplomats these days seems to be, tread softly, maybe he isn't as crazy just playing it. There's some rationale to it, there's no point in exacerbating a difficult situation to bad and/or out of control states upfront. But we, the rational world have to understand very clearly that any such dispositions, assumptions and hopes can be short lived, like months literally. And be prepared to act with no delay or hesitation. Because if there are any signs of siding with Putin, the worst international criminal in the world since Hitler we can interpret it one way only: the peaceful and stable future of the humanity itself, all of it, will be at stake. If Putin is allowed to get away with his crimes, it'll be a free season for maniacs with nukes for the observable future, with nothing left to stand in its way. We have to understand this very clearly. There can be no place for indecision, procrastination and delays.

America, with great struggle overcame the mob in politics. But it could not touch the big money in politics. That was the undoing of democracy.

Let me guess: you're watching Fox News right? It's just a guess but it would be one simple and perfect explanation. Did I get it right? Fox News: we make lies look just like truth -

Tyrany has arrived in the United States of America
myata replied to godzilla's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Every other American movie has if not God then Caesar-like president. Executive orders, unlimited privilege of pardons, now above the law and beyond all effective checks. At last it settled into the brains of pueblo. Goebbells invented mass propaganda and big buck in America took it much further though in more subtle ways. -
Note by the way the moral balance here: these folks are perfectly fine with the use of force to grab something that doesn't belong to them. And all of a sudden, on a dime they are up in arms against "war", not fighting God forbid just helping a victim of a most heinous aggression of this century. At the same time. Know the word for that? Yes that's them they past pretending and hiding, proud of it. If it will speak for America now, it would would one of the quickest examples of an onset of moral corruption in the entire history. The fall of Rome took centuries. And for the folks like @Army Guy still looking for complexities, not so simple? You sure know (even now) that when this sh*t rises, there were those who marched and shouted and those who stood by looking away and pretending nothing much is happening. You sure knew that, now.

The brainless bunch already demonstrated - factually, that they don't understand the notion of law and justice; they have no respect for it. And they are ready to do away with it whenever the opportunity presents itself. If you are dumb or careless or something else to not think what it means not for someone half a world away but for you, it won't save you from the future of lawlessness and chaos coming back to you. Like that boomerang, of the cause and its logical consequence. No explanations of simplicity, naivete would help you one bit. Sure, you knew.

Well we, most of the world know that neither of the claims on Greenland, Panama and/or Canada is going to transpire in this reality any time soon. Renaming games and chasing immigrants for some to feel great again may not be entertaining enough and for long enough. The pueblo may begin scratching its head and looking for answers: real, factual and visible. And this is why Ukraine offers such a great opportunity to come up with just that. I don't have predetermined conclusions. I know who said and did what but I'm not deciding what will happen. I would certainly acknowledge it if he takes real and practical steps to bring the criminal regime into compliance with the international law it so blatantly violated. The way to that end is clear: arm Ukraine properly, that Joe was too scared/hesitant/senile to do; and suffocate the criminal state with severe sanctions so that either its economy collapses; or it starts complying; or both. Again, there's nothing problematic or uncertain about this option. There's only one problem: it may not bring quick poster picture solutions, probably not in a matter of weeks or months. The other possibility is clear as well: to collude with the worst international criminals since the times of WWII and try to press Ukraine into accepting and unjust and unsafe parody of "peace". Important is to see right now, from the outset that these choices are mutually exclusive and no compromises between them are possible. International law either exists or it does not. Aggression in relations between countries, either outlawed and prosecuted or welcomed and encouraged. And very clearly, this decision will decide the kind of the next age of the humanity: will it be the restoration of the law and order; or a descent into a new Dark Age of lawlessness and violence, this time with the nukes. We have to be clear on the kind of choices and their impact on our future. There can be no misunderstandings or hesitation. This choice is coming and there's no avoiding it and its consequences.

Through all of this, the Democrat Officialdom is coming through as a disoriented, clueless and pretty useless in this pivotal moment of history bunch. Another wise "strategy" like holding Ukraine aid hostage in budget bickering we discussed in the fall of 2024? Well anyone can see how that one worked out - but they learned nothing and looks like have no intent of learning. The accusations of the public, having failed the most important responsibility in a century if not the entire history of democracy is as bombastic as ridiculous. They manufactured their defeat, were warned about it many times and now, weak and bitter think nothing of leading but blaming someone else for their grotesque failure. Watching the numbers in a naive or ridiculous? hope that "the process" will deliver them the fruit right into the stretched hand, with nothing to do for it. As it's been for a while now, long. Why bother? When the play into the system becomes closer and more important than the reality. The motto. An accomplished decay of duty and essence.
