Recently, while traveling in Europe for professional reasons I spoke to the locals and on couple of occasions I noticed and was disturbed by the similarity of the sentiment: elites are lying and conspiring against the regular folk; all politics is dirty; democracy doesn't work. And interestingly, at least understanding if not tacit support of Russia's aggressive behavior. These weren't necessarily poor disadvantaged people, some homeowners others on a break traveling across Europe. Still that reality of their everyday life in prosperous modern societies somehow didn't connect with their sentiment. I wonder if after much research and trials in some totalitarian lab someone invented a corrosive mix, cocktail of half-truth, lies resembling of truth, just the right degree of forceful to angry sentiment and a target/scapegoat that works effectively on weak and/or relaxed/unprepared minds? Which is now been spread through many channels with the purpose of corroding Western democracies from within? The similarity of the message is quite remarkable despite the individuals being from the opposite ends of Europe. Granted, no democracy is perfect but this nihilistic, destructive aspect of it was both noticeable and worrisome. We cannot forget that there are many forces in this world which are no friends of democracy and would love to see it toppled. And we should find the fine line between the freedom to speak an honest opinion, and uncontrolled and massive spreading of hostile propaganda. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with a free season to pump and spread lies.

There's no more Red and Blue. These are no longer normal parliamentary political parties in a functional democracy. As seen, clearly and factually. One has become an all-out authoritarian cult, no shame and proud of it "Allow Him the third term" "Make the Idol's birthday a national holiday" "Rename Greenland" (and Gulf of Mexico, done) None of this is (forget seems and sounds) normal. All of the above is plain nuts, as stupid and insane as it goes. The change is, they are no longer trying to hide it and proud of it. And the other has grown into a complacent shapeless elitist ameba goo that exists for one aim only: retain and propagate the crumbling and corrupting status quo as long as possible and then some into the impossible. It's been a long time since they stood for any meaningful change, forget enacted it and don't seem to be interested anymore. The First American Constitution is a thing of the past. If there's a sane and rational way out of this conundrum it certainly wouldn't be "let's tread softly speak meekly and stay on the economy message till the fool shoots himself in the foot and then we'll win the election and things will go back". To the sleepy status quo, no change needed. Miraculously. No way. Nope: doesn't happen in this reality. Sleepwalking into a disaster? Sure. Any time. Sooo many postmortems just boring.

One can see, in plain view the disaster it would end in. One has to be both blind and severely mentally incapacitated to fall for it. Sadly, in the political system we have one is reduced to choosing between static immovable options, voting for "the lesser evil" as opposed to "the best match". I will always advise Canada to leave it in the past and modernize its political system, meaningfully and immediately but while it is what it is, an individual of reason and integrity will have a choice between two imperfect options. But in this case, it is reduced to the one between an imperfect and the impossible one. There can be no justifications for choosing cowardly, perpetually lying insanity. And it will always come with a grotesque and debilitating price. Even at the price of ending the democracy itself. Nothing to guess or project here. As seen with own eyes, in a clear plain view.

Wins Come All Day Under President Donald J. Trump
myata replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Question: has it added one, single real dollar into the pockets of the brainwashed who decided to prefer painted food and prosperity? The answer: no, but it cost them $$ minimum and $$$ in some cases, in this reality. And it will continue of course. You will eat the propaganda sh*t and drink propaganda p*ss pumped to you by billionaire beneficiaries while getting more desperate and poorer by day. - Paying outrageous megabucks for health services folks in modern democracies take for granted "patriotic"? But of course, happy to oblige! - Ten eggs cost ridiculously "patriotic" $12 or more (1/2 dozen 1.2 Euro in the nearby supermarket): you've got it! - Repossessed home because you were fired arbitrarily? Great for the future greatness of Omerika! Damaged thinking always ends up as a leaking pocket - and lucky if not bankruptcy and living for basic survival. Just can't get past this law of nature. And good luck, there you'll sure need it for the next who knows how many years. -
And the concluding remarks. 1. An election in the environment of non-existent or compromised rule of law can be meaningless. "It can never happen" to us, the idea? 2. A society that decides the choice solely on "economic performance" can be classified as authoritarianism- and/or fascism-ready. If it stopped caring about: the rule of law; the functioning of democracy; general and universal principles of freedom and democracy; and even, the objective reality itself such a society can elect fascism and has done it, and not once. And importantly, this condition is already the past, done and sealed.

I agree that "fascism" can be a disputable definition in this case but will refrain from changing the title now. Some relevant observations: - "Murderous genocide" belongs to the definition of German Nazism, but not a necessary attribute of fascism in general. Italian fascism generally recognized as such, did not have it neither Portuguese, Argentinean and Chilean dictatorship that came very close. - An aggressive expansionism including militarism characterizes all generally accepted cases of fascism and has been expressed by Trump's administration. - Suspension of general elections is not a necessary attribute of fascism as shown by Italian early fascism, 1924 - 1939. - The idea that "elections" can mean anything without or with compromised rule of law is beyond naive, as any self-respecting dictator and I'm too bored to count factual instances will claim that they won the elections pet courts "confirming" the outcome and then use brutal force to suppress protests "legitimately". This is not an abstract thought in the US even now.

Folks you sure know that these days there are friendship, psychological support, nurturing, life advice, teen advice, dating, gardening, cooking and pretty much all other stuff under the moon right at your fingertips? Why the- would anyone keep looking for these things in a policy discussion group? The mind of a cult convert is such a fascinating subject.

Nothing works up little minds more than a simple factual question they couldn't answer or an argument they have no chance of countering rationally. And then, they see a typo or misplaced word and have an epiphany moment: we can remove the question instead! Sure it's corruptive: anything that touches that angry dark mental goo can lose the ability to see things and events for themselves and assess them with own, clear and independent mind. Take good care of you mental hygiene in these times.

One faceplant: meet with Kim. Remember how did it go? Two: torpedoing the joint allied mission in Afghanistan by a unilateral deal with Taliban. Need to be reminded what happened? Now he can't wait to meet Vlad, the thug, Hitler's apprentice. Need to guess the prospects? Anything he touches goes sideways and falls apart. In the rational world, there has to be a reason for that.

The implosion has been unfolding lightening fast, unprecedented in history. And the last line is here: if/when he begins to openly defy court orders, with no consequence: the first episode would mark and signify the formal end of American democracy and the rule of law. Yes you made it all the way here, laughing and watching sitcoms under incessant droning of lying propaganda drowning thinking, integrity and morality. "Where the law ends, tyranny begins". America can travel back in time decades or centuries but she won't discover anything new here.

A psychotic raper first raped his victim under a bad sheriff. Then a good sheriff came and he continued to rape, daily, with no consequence. That would be the difference, right there? In what world? Be careful when you decide to part with your brain - it can happen to be irreversible. Yeah and wean yourself off the lying "news" only a friendly tip to keep your sanity.

You're forgetting one but very significant factor directly related to this case. I'm not going to give any further hints, because blind won't see, deaf won't hear and so on. Wanna try... connecting with the reality? You can agree with a fairy unicorn with exactly same credibility. In the absence of any objective evidence supporting your point, and some directly contradicting it. He was President while Putin waged his war in Ukraine, for the entire time of his first term. Any chance of connection?

Mark Carney will march us straight into an American disaster

Note the same pattern: smear and fear. If not smear, then fear. We have all the opportunities to watch in real time what bombastic liars can and will do when they get to the power. Nothing good, once. Disastrous, less than a month in, the second. Not a single fresh, novel idea. No clear plans. Just sign here and wait for miracles to come your way. What, again? -
There's something very wrong with: Denmark and Greenland, Canada, Mexico, the entire Europe and European Union, South Africa, International Criminal Court, I'm sure list will grow wide and fast. And who/what is on the other, true side? 1. MAGA and its lackeys in the United States. 2. Putin and his pocket Russia. Is the picture clear enough already? Anything to add?
-
Well I thought the earlier was thoughtless enough but look there's a lower bottom. Is that your new standard of polemics, and what if a star-eyed fairy unicorn did that? Maybe, just a thought! there was a reason Biden did nothing of the kind, and no sane individual of integrity and principles would?
