Moderating Mapleafweb's Moderation
Charles Anthony replied to Argus's topic in Support and Questions
To lead folks to start a Part 2 thread that avoids the derailment. What exactly is so offensive with starting a Part 2 thread that avoids the derailment? Do you want moderators to stop thread drift? -
Folks, Please avoid thread drift. ---- because it is harmful to the forum. It derails the discussion.
-
Indeed. Folks have to squint or otherwise go out of their own way to read them. Your fellow forum members will answer that for you in due course. Some of the posting patterns here are like clockwork. If your OP provokes a series of requests for sources, you set your discussion up to be clutter. A link in the OP is not always necessary but I have to ask: What do you want? Do you want a fruitful discussion?

Guys, Please avoid thread drift. -
Stay strong. Do not be afraid to cry.

What policy do you want regarding posting images here at MLW? Take your pick: 1) multi-media forbidden anywhere in the forum; inline links only; 2) multi-media permitted everywhere in the forum; 3) multi-media permitted only in the lower forums; inline links only in the upper forums; 4) multi-media permitted everywhere in the forum; forced thumb-nails; click to expand in new window; Any other choices? Here are some past threads: Images Quoting PDFs

This is just a trial run. The intention being to simplify the policy on images to permit them everywhere in the forum. Mod staff are not in agreement yet on whether any change is warranted. The size of the thumbnail can be customized bigger or smaller. It has just now been increased. What do you recommend?

This thread was split up. Most of the posts were sent into a new thread entitled: Canadian Immigration. -

No but you were told the same thing multiple times and it was expressly stated in this thread multiple times too. Perhaps there is confusion over what "In the Off Topic forums" means. Please replace "In the Off Topic forums" with "In the Arts and Culture, Health, Science and Technology, Business and Economy, Travel, Leisure and Sports, Media and Broadcasting forums" in my previous post. -
Somebody will have to hold the door open for them, I guess. Any volunteers?

Hide Avatar Column From View An optional display mode whereby the left-hand column that displays member avatars is hidden from view would allow more horizontal display space for the posts.

This has been answered multiple times. In the Off Topic forums, post all of the images and videos you want. In the Upper forums, post a hyper-link to any multi-media files. -

When you encounter that and you want moderator intervention, report the post and tell moderator staff what you want done. Do not quote the post and do not respond to the post in the public forum. If the post consists of nothing more than a drive-by "You are a racist!" or snark to that effect, then the post should be taken down before anybody feeds or responds to any more trolling. If a member chooses to respond/quote the post before mod staff can intervene, then the post may be left up if the response/quote makes an effort to stay on topic and ignore the trolling. -

Not that it matters much but I believe being called a racist just means there is no argument against what was said because I know, you know, he knows, she knows, we all know the word "racist" is vague. I believe being called a racist is enough of a reason to stop arguing. I usually burst out laughing whenever somebody calls me a racist. I keep laughing until I can not "argue" anymore or the "argument" defacto stops. No. We are not OK with people hurling these insults. We see it. We just do not make a point of deleting more than necessary to get the behavior to stop. What is going on is time. You folks do not appreciate how time matters in our decision to intervene or not. If trolling has stopped or if 99% of the membership ignores the trolling, we will not go out of our way to delete posts. If trolling has not stopped, we start hacking at the branches until 99% of the members refrain from feeding the trolling. You folks need to learn how to stop and let go. It does not matter. If you do not like the question, do not answer it. Ignore the post and move on. Nobody is obligated to respond to other members. That sounds like a thread derail. There is no need to take anything too personally because derailing a thread is against the forum rules and guidelines too. -

Nobody said that. Mod staff is NOT just going to assume that some people do not mind the tag. Why would you (or anybody) respond to an inaccurate label? If a fellow member posts an insult or a personal attack, report it and ignore it. Do not respond in kind. -

No. Keep your private information to yourselves. "Not everybody is insulted by being called a racist. Calling somebody racist does not automatically spell the derailment of a discussion." What? Huh? Really? Yes, really. Nobody is obligated to respond to anybody else's posts. If you get offended by a member's post, report it and ignore it. If you do not get offended by a member's post, you have a choice: ignore it or respond to it. If you choose to respond to a post, follow the forum rules and guidelines. --- because the disruptive behavior had stopped. -
Moderating Mapleafweb's Moderation
Charles Anthony replied to Argus's topic in Support and Questions
Why? If you're not going to do anything about it what's the point?--- because sometimes you are right and we do something about it. It does not matter what word you use. I know, you know, he knows, she knows, we all know whatever label you use will be vague and or miscontrued. Far be it for me to tell you guys how to communicate but if you insist upon pigeon-holing folks, then you are going to have to link to an intelligent definition every time lest you be misunderstood. -

Charles Anthony replied to Argus's topic in Support and Questions
-- because insulting people is against the forum rules and guidelines. Why?-- because there is no reason to bring a post to moderator attention if you respond to the post. SIMPLE RULE OF THUMB: If you want mod staff to delete posted material, do not give mod staff more to delete than necessary. Please report any more instances of trolling and ignore them too. No. That is not what I am saying. No. We are not fine with the deliberate derailment of threads. I am saying that the answer to your question does not matter because it would not make an actionable difference. If you encounter trolling, report it and ignore it. If everybody ignores it then there is no need for moderator intervention. Why is this so complicated?? Not everybody is insulted by being called a racist. Calling somebody racist does not automatically spell the derailment of a discussion. -

Moderator intervention tends to censor the least.Once the disruptive behavior tends to stop, moderator intervention tends to stop. What is the moral ground?
