Charting the Danger of the Modern Left
impartialobserver replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
You are such the master of exaggeration and hyperbole.. Do you recall my writing this (look below)? That is a far cry from shrivel up and die. Unemployment rate will bump up to 4.5 or 4.6. Second, you have a lot of hate for folks you do not know. Most of these federal workers are regular joes. They do not work for the federal government due to some civic pride. Not even close.. it pays and it works for them due to geography or whatever. It takes time to get a new job. If you do not know this... curious to know how you can be so out of touch with human nature and reality. "Is the increase going to be profound? Probably not. You will see this increase in the april numbers." -
Charting the Danger of the Modern Left

This is why being so overzealously partisan blinds you. Folks will see a slight uptick in the unemployment rate and not do any research as to how or why. Also, a lot of things are automated. Meaning that when the number goes up, certain things come into motion. Its not a matter of judgment. Its like turning the key in your car's ignition. Turn the key clockwise (in most cars) and the engine starts and so on. There have been losses in the private sector. With the federal employees being laid off, the folks that provided them inputs/services are no longer needed. -
Somewhat related. Trump's schpiel about raking the forest is simply dumb. Having been to all of these areas, Trump and 99.9% of his supporters do not realize how empty these places are. Yes, you have a town such as Quincy, CA. The surrounding area is hot, dry, and empty in the summer. I could give other instances but this will suffice. Vast areas with little to no population.. so who is going to do this raking?
-
If you do not do any research, it sounds ok. Release the water and make the surrounding country less dry. But then you realize that this is near Bakersfield which is a hot, dry SOB. Sure, release the water now and it will have lower fire danger today and for the next month. By July, it will be back to being very fire prone.

Charting the Danger of the Modern Left
impartialobserver replied to Deluge's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Tariffs and the federal layoffs are going to make for an interesting midterm election season. Its a simple math equation.. if you add to the unemployed number, the unemployment rate goes up. Folks tend to react to that number.. like it or not. Is the increase going to be profound? Probably not. You will see this increase in the april numbers. -
Lake Kaweah predates Newsom and Trump's time in office. It was built in 1962 for flood control and agriculture. To get the water from Lake Kaweah to LA would demand that they build an aqueduct. That takes more than a few seconds.. by the way. So releasing the water from this lake and thinking that it would affect Pacific Palisades shows a profound lack of knowledge of the geography. All this does is ensure that there will be less water available for agriculture in July and August.
-
LA is not unique though. Most place out West are not truly prepared. They have just been lucky. Reno, Boise, Spokane, Salt Lake city... lots of dead grass, brush, and so on. If they were to catch fire.. they would not be in a great position. Republican governors in 3 of the 4 states... not doing anything about this.
-
Agreed. Folks tend to put off massive expenditures. A complete upgrade of the entire water system is highly expensive. The reservoirs that LA has for emergency use were not empty. These are San Gabriel, Lake Arrowhead, Morris Reservoir, and Cogswell. Now again.. these are the ones that LA county has full access to in case of emergency. However, those are of secondary importance. Had the water system had increased capacity (12 million gallons(.. this story probably dies off soon.
-
Well.. first why was Lake Kaweah constructed? Was it for backup water in case LA was having fires? Answer... it was for flood control and agriculture. There was no infrastructure in place for getting this water to LA. Do you know where LA gets a lot of its water? Pull up google maps and follow US 395 south of Bishop, CA.. that is where the infrastructure for water is. It is called the Owens Valley Project.
-
There was no practical way to get this water (mentioned in the article) to Pacific Palisades. What is going to have to be done is an upgrade of the entire water infrastructure. This is going to be very costly and residents will be none too happy. The emergency water system currently only has the capacity for 3 million gallons. They needed 12 million gallons on that day. The reservoirs north and east of LA had in excess of 60 million gallons. So in short, a bit of a bottleneck. As to Newsom having the fires set intentionally and planning it... I do not buy it. Fires happen and never are they politically convenient. It just happens that LA is a rather dry place and folks like their greenery. Even if that greenery is highly flammable and there is too much of it.

Are the Democrats an Actual Cult?
impartialobserver replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
All political parties could be classified as cults. They are united in message due to trying to achieve something through numbers. Of course, they steadfastly hold to certain ideas and policies. If you did not, your constituency would rightfully find you to be wavering and therefore weak. Also, this is how you get your legislation passed. -
Should Toronto bid for the 2036 Olympics?
impartialobserver replied to Zeitgeist's topic in Local Politics in Canada
My other options were chicago and New York City. But have never been to Toronto and have always found it interesting. Also, price of hotels in Toronto is less than NYC. Interesting info.- 44 replies

Should Toronto bid for the 2036 Olympics?
impartialobserver replied to Zeitgeist's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Joking not aside... A tuque while at Rogers Centre with 50,000+ (or whatever the capacity) rabid rock fans, starting to sweat just thinking about it. But anyways, should be a fun but short trip.- 44 replies

Should Toronto bid for the 2036 Olympics?
impartialobserver replied to Zeitgeist's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Only going to be in town for roughly 38 hours. Still, think I may not want to announce to all near me that I am American.- 44 replies

The reason for this wanting to diversify is due to volatility. Every time there is a local or national economic downturn, Nevada leads the way in layoffs, job losses, and unemployment rates. Its an effort to have an economy that is more stable and predictable. For example.. the Covid recession Nevada had an unemployment rate of 30.5 percent in April 2020. No other state exceeded 14 percent. Besides gambling and tourism, the state has considerable mining activity (gold, copper, and lithium). This mostly occurs in the northeastern part of the state (on the way to Utah). We have Tesla east of Reno but that is due to having no state income tax and the higher ups at Tesla being fan of Burning Man. as for agriculture, that is a bit more complex. The reason for there being so little agriculture is the following 1. Alkaline soil 2. Lack of rainfall 3. Not a lot of actual soil.. you can hit bed rock in as little as six inches 4. Water rights (legally and rightfully obtained) owned by ranchers who will never give these up. 5. The inevitable and untimely May frost. Temps will be fine from april to mid-may and then we have the inevitable low of 22 in mid to late may. This is why there is no large scale fruit production. 6. Yes, California plays into it. Most of the rivers in Northern Nevada start in CA (Walker, Truckee, and Carson). the ranchers on the CA side often feel threatened and so take their full allotment even when it is very clear that they do not need it.
