Liberal Party Takes Lead in Polls
Aristides replied to TreeBeard's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The free trade treaty was due to be reopened next year. What he is doing now has nothing to do with renegotiation, it's a crude power play from a crude man. There is no point in negotiating anything with this man because he won't keep his word anyway. He acts and we react. We act and he can deal with it just like we are having to deal with his bullshit. It's as simple as that at least until he is gone. No trust, no history. He threw that in the garbage and we are starting over. -

A man sits across from power. His fingers tighten around the arms of his chair. The bully makes no effort to mask his contempt. He sits rigidly, eyes burning with an unnatural intensity, fingers twitching on the armrest of his chair. When he speaks, it is not a conversation but an eruption — words spat like bullets, contempt laced through every syllable. The outburst does not abate. It is not a speech but an assault, designed not to persuade but to disorient, to cow, to humiliate. The bully leans forward, slamming his fists against the table. His face reddens, his voice sharpens. He moves from insults to threats, from history to grandiosity. The great country he leads will no longer be mistreated, he says. Those days are over. The people have had enough. His words are not arguments — they’re sentences, verdicts, pronouncements of doom. “You are nothing,” says the bully, not quite shouting. One of his lackeys smirks. “You think you are independent? You are a failure, a disgrace.” Behind him, the immense generals stand silent, unmoving. They don’t need to speak; their presence says everything. The visitor looks at them and understands what is being offered. This is not diplomacy. It’s a choice between submission and annihilation. The visitor is allowed no rebuttal. He does not speak until the torrent of invective slows, and even then, his words are weak, uncertain. He tries to protest, to insist that he and his country are not to blame, that he has done all he could to maintain peace. The bully’s response is bitter, scornful laughter, as if the very idea is absurd. He rises suddenly—pacing now, shaking his head, muttering to himself in a fevered rant. “You will sign, or we will act. You will agree, or you will cease to exist.” There is no need to say what that means. The visitor has seen the faces of the men behind him. He knows that even if he signs, this meeting is not a negotiation but an autopsy. He has been given no options, only demands. If he yields, his nation dies slowly. If he resists, it dies swiftly. There will be no help coming. The year was 1938. The visitor was the chancellor of Austria, Kurt Schuschnigg. The bully was Adolf Hitler. The place was the Berghof, Hitler’s alpine retreat.

Liberal Party Takes Lead in Polls

Some of that is true but it doesn't change the fact Trump is a predator and Trudeau's response has been appropriate. -

Yes, Trump tore up his own agreement so there is no point in negotiating with the guy because he won't keep his word anyway. Trudeau has said Canada will not be removing any tariffs until Trump removes all of his. You can be damn sure that he has discussed this with both Carney and Freeland. -
The trade war is back on
Aristides replied to CouchPotato's topic in Canada / United States Relations
No it isn't. Provinces have the power to tax in their own jurisdictions, they don't have the power to tariff imports. -

Russia's asset or not: find one difference
Aristides replied to myata's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Just because you have no connection to Russia doesn't mean you aren't an asset. Just about everything you post on this subject makes you one whether you know it or not. -

Trump delays auto tariffs. Looks like the manufacturers gave him a dose of reality. Now he has 30 days to figure out how to declare a victory. Canada says we aren't removing any of its tariffs until Trump removes all of his tariffs. We aren't playing Trump's game anymore. Stay tuned. Even without the auto tariffs, the metal tariffs will jack up the price of vehicles. -

The only ones who can't see it are his faithful. They can't bring themselves to admit to the fact they have been betrayed.. -

Propaganda maybe but it is also what Trump has done. -

He has publicly berated Zelensky and has cut off all aid and intelligence to Ukraine. That is not the action of a mediator, it is a bully trying to impose his will by intentionally weakening one side and putting it's citizens in danger, which also happens to be Putin's. -
https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business/2025/03/05/canada-wont-scrap-tariffs-unless-all-us-levies-are-lifted-official-says/ This is the right approach. Let Trump keep digging a hole and don't give an inch until all tariffs removed. Otherwise he can just keep playing stupid games.

Trump does want to end this war and his idea of peace is to give Putin everything he wants. Ukraine isn't eve invited to the table. As I said, any fvcking id!ot can come up with that and all it will do is lead to another war, probably the invasion of one or more of the Baltic states because Putin knows the US can no longer be relied on to honour NATO Article 5. Trump isn't acting as a mediator, he is acting as Putin's flunky. -

Trump has been busy telling Zelensky that he can't hope for anything more than he has and Russia is going to get everything it wants and Trump is going to do everything he can to force this on Ukraine. Putin hasn't had to say a word so who is Trump acting for? Trump's idea of a peace treaty is for one side to surrender. Any fvcking id!ot can come up with that. -
I don't think we should be cutting off power exports, just charging them more. There are a lot of Quebec businesses that are also going to get hammered by these tariffs.

If Trump's lips are moving he is lying. Last night was just more of the same. -

There won't be any talk of reduction, the tariffs have to go. Period. We have a free trade agreement and aren't going to renegotiate simply because Trump has decided to ignore it. There will be no signed agreements with the Trump administration because they are worthless. -

Convert some of those green houses growing pot to vegetables and we wouldn't need nearly as many vegetables from the US.
