Cheese: Why no choice? So expensive!
Aristides replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/illegal-immigrants-us-jobs-economy-farm-workers-taxes/ It's depressing how many Canadians are so quick to shit on their own country without bothering to ask why American producers can operate with lower prices. -

The import quotas were negotiated by Trump in the last FTA. Tariffs are charged on US product above those quotas. There no tariffs on Canadian product above the quotas because they are outright banned from entering the US. US exports to Canada have never reached those quotas and Canada imports almost twice as much dairy from the US than it exports to the US. Our quota system ensures user pay, Canadian farmers receive no subsidies from government. -
I never said anything of the sort. Trump has banned travel from these countries and now he wants to use them as his garbage can. The court order forbade their deportation pending a decision whether they would be in danger of death or torture if sent and they were entitled to legal representation to argue their case.

The US is trying to take advantage of the fractured political situations in these countries to dump their undesirables. Literally using them as your trash cans. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/libya-s-leaders-say-they-haven-t-agreed-to-accept-deported-migrants-from-the-us/ar-AA1Emjsk https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/what-to-know-about-south-sudan-where-u-s-apparently-sent-migrants-on-deportation-flight

A country’s reputation is built on how it actually treats people, not what it claims to be. The court order didn’t prevent them from being deported, it was against having them sent to any old shithole that was convenient. How would you take it if you ran afoul of the law in some country and they decided to ship you to Sudan instead of.back to the US? I take you think that would be acceptable.

It isn’t a free market when some are being subsidized by government and relying on undocumented labour and others aren’t. The US pays farmers to produce more than they can sell domestically so they want to dump the excess on us because we are the only market for liquid milk close enough that it won’t spoil in transit. So stop the BS about free markets. One would think a country’s ability to feed itself would be some kind of priority but not for you. You want to hand that to the US along with everything else.

I wasn’t happy to see Carney crater on this one but I think we will have to wait while this shakes out and judge the result. For better or worse, he’s our guy so let’s hope he knows what he is doing.
