Air Canada Strike -Does Mark Carney have "power"?
Aristides replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I never claimed they could find alternative flights, that never would have been possible. If they did manage to find an alternative they could bill Air Canada for it but that's all. Looks like they will get half pay for one hour before departure, which seems in line with the latest US contracts. -
So what, neither did Sweden, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Turkey and 17 others. If he had gone you would have just called him Trump's b!tch anyway.

In the early seventies you could buy a new B747 for less than $30 million and the Canadian dollar was at par. Now a B777-300 averages $375 million with the CAD at less than 75 cents. Fuel was 17 cents a gallon instead or 90 cents a litre yet fares haven't gone up nearly as much. Those savings have to come from somewhere. -
Including Zelenskyy only seven European national leaders were present plus two from the European commission. NATO has 32 members.

Flight attendants are required by the feds to make sure safety regulations are followed and to get you out of the aircraft if something goes wrong. That won't change. Passenger aviation is essential in a country the size of Canada with its relatively small population. -

Binding arbitration doesn't actually remove the right to bargain. Both sides bargain before an arbitrator who then decides what is fair. It does remove the right to strike or lockout. Mediators are just there to help the process along, not impose a settlement. -

If an airline is an essential service, so are its flight attendants. A minimum number depending on the number of passengers and exits are required by law for safety reasons. This could add substantial costs that could hurt competitiveness against foreign carriers on international routes if they don't have to play by the same rules. It would apply to pilots as well. -

It won't hurt them on a domestic level because all carriers will be subject to the same rule. It might hurt them against international competitors if it adds costs their competition doesn't have. -

Actually the pay doesn't start until the park brake is released and the aircraft is moving. Apparently there have been some changes in the contracts of major US carriers that provides some pay for time before and after. We'll have to see how this contract compares. This is their first contract in 10 years so there are bound to be some major changes. -
The primary causes of forest fires in British Columbia are lightning, which accounts for about 60% of fires, and human activities, responsible for approximately 40%. Human-caused fires can result from actions like open burning, discarded cigarettes, and arson. gov.bc.ca Wikipedia Causes of Forest Fires in British Columbia Natural Causes Lightning Strikes: Approximately 60% of wildfires in British Columbia are caused by lightning. When lightning strikes, it can ignite trees and other vegetation. Other Natural Factors: Rarely, other natural events can lead to wildfires, but they are not as common as lightning. Human Activity Accidental Ignition: About 40% of wildfires are caused by human actions, which can include: Open burning (e.g., campfires) Vehicle and engine use Industrial activities Fireworks and sky lanterns Discarding burning items like cigarettes Arson Contributing Environmental Factors Drought Conditions: Extended periods of dry weather increase the risk of wildfires. Climate Change: Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns contribute to longer and more severe wildfire seasons. Forest Management Practices: Historical fire suppression and logging practices can leave behind fuel that increases fire risk.

I dispute the statement that forest management is not happening and evolving. We spent over a billion fighting fires last year, how much more do you want to spend. It's interesting that those who refuse to admit climate change, increasing temperatures and droughts are a factor in the number and intensity of fires are the same ones most critical of forest management practices.

You realize that BC is almost 50% bigger than Texas, most of it mountains and much of that either inaccessible or difficult to get to. The 2021 flooding was mostly caused by record rainfalls, over 6 inches in 3 days. The Abbotsford flooding had nothing to do with logging. Sumas Prairie usually floods when the Nooksack River in Washington breaks its banks and flows north over the border, also flooding the towns of Sumas, Nooksack and Everson in WA. Some of the Coquihalla flooding could have been aggravated by logging practices but a lot of it was due to the way the highway was constructed in a rush to be ready for Expo 86. Merritt is built on low land next to a river. Flooding has been an issue there for decades. Selective logging would help where there is logging but clearcuts are not just a Canadian thing. I used to regularly fly between Vancouver and California and you can see extensive clearcutting in Washington, Oregon and Northern California.
