  1. Things are not as clear cut as you think. The "left" abhors irresponsible rednecks.
  2. You forgot about Belize, and the British & French territories. Most of the rest however are Republics, although that has been part of the political unrest in many of them.
  3. The old white southerner, interesting that they were once Democrats. While Republicans are twice a likely to be gun owners as Democrats that still leaves a lot of armed Democrats.
  4. Canada is a large consumer of American goods. You keep talking about China, yet they sell to America but buy very little.
  5. Foreign students bring revenue to Canada, although yes they may take jobs away as well. I believe students can work on-campus or part time (20 hours/week) off campus, otherwise they need a work permit. It would be interest to know how many of those Mac jobs are foreign students. I believe if you are in a co-op program, you need to get a work permit but it is fairly easy in that case (subject to restrictions).
  6. Yes, it appears that NAFTA is dead. Time to put massive import duties on all American goods, and focus on Europe. Since the California aquifer is dried up, we will need to get our fresh produce from Spain instead. That new port in Sydney is looking better all the time.
  7. Freudian slip? While the party has not, certainly individual Conservatives have. They are also tainted by the conservatives in the US who are doing that right now.
  8. There have been many changes to cinema over the years. The two big one I see during Scorsese's career is the change from film to digital, and the change from the large downtown venue to the multiplex. The movie going public is almost totally unaware of the change to digital, but for industry insiders it has had massive impact on the business. Distribution is almost entirely digital, even for the films that are shot on film. There were massive savings to be had both in terms of making the prints, and in insurance. There were also significant savings at the local theater, where projectionists essentially went the way of the dodo bird. There are quality differences to digital, but for the most part they are hard to discern. In the last 5 years or so over 80% of movies have been shot in digital as well. On a movie set today you will usually find an Arri Alexa or Red camera. Digital is not always better, but it does offer a lot of advantages and more important it is a lot cheaper. Only big name directors seem to be able to get the financing for film work these days, and a lot of the art of shooting and editing film is becoming lost. The change from the large downtown cinema to the multiplex however is very visible to the public. It happened for the most part in the 60's & 70's and many people just can't relate to the old cinemas. It has been years since I have been in a cinema with an aisle down the center, low pitch floor, and a balcony. Today we have smaller auditoriums, with high rake (stadium style) seating, and of course many of them showing multiple films at the same location. You can thank, or curse, a Canadian for that innovation. Nat Taylor converted the old Elgin Theater in Ottawa to show 2 films on 2 screens, and then went on to start Cineplex Odeon with the once largest (18 screen) multiplex at he Eaton Center in Toronto. AMC copied this format and took it to new levels. Lets not forget the almost disappearance of the outdoor movie theater.
  9. True, but we fixed that problem in October 2015.
  10. The regressive cave men have 2 years to Make America a Laughing Stock, unless of course an armed revolt occurs first.
  11. Freedom of expression is ok, but making racist remarks doesn't mean you are not a racist just because your speech is protected. Other are also protected in calling you a racist. No words are not actions. Words may demonstrate you are a racist. Actions may demonstrate you are an arsonist, rapist, or murderer.
  12. I guess we will see when they release the budget in April how they address the situation. Will they increase taxes, will they change immigration policies, will they made different investments, will the cut programs, etc.
  13. Yes, he is changing polices. Not however on immigration. There is no prioritization of China/Middle East, that is another dumb Levant rant. Yes a few more offices were opened in China to deal with the immigration applications but that is not a prioritization in any way as we have discussed before. I have no clue what entrepreneur class means, for that matter what entrepreneur itself means. There was a very marginal increase for very high income earners, yes we know that. We know you don't like regulation, nothing new there. You totally ignore the investments he is making, you are only looking at half the ingredients in the recipe.
  14. I don't know, there are no left wing nutcases like Lilly/Levant running around tabulating every move of the Prime Minister. Probably because there are not a lot of left wing loons who lap up that trash.
  15. Turning Red Square into a bankrupt wasteland, one historical building at a time. On a practical note, the cathedral itself would probably not serve well as a casino due to limited interior space because of the thick stone construction. It would however serve as an excellent attraction associated with a casino like modern Las Vegas (Sphinx, Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, etc.).
  16. I thought I was clear when I stated that nobody is saying CEOs don't deserve more than the average employee. It is all about the gross disparity. This has been further distorted by the changes to the tax code over the past 50-70 years where one those who earned more actually paid more and now it is the exact opposite. The more you make the less you end up paying. The economy is supposed to provide benefits to everyone, and not just lead to the old robber baron system. Nobody, repeat nobody is suggesting everyone earn the same. Stop making that accusation, because it is not true.
  17. These are long standing Canadian immigrations policies, not Trudeau's. What you are saying it that Trudeau is not changing the policies and you think he should. Are you aware that about 30% of the economic class immigrants are provincial nominees? That has been consistent for years. The only appreciable difference last year was the increase in refugees, and it remains to be seen if that will carry forward. The approximately 20,000 more refugees last year is less than 7% of the total immigrants, and it remains to see how economically independent they do become. The last significant change in immigration polices was 30 years ago under Mulroney, all governments including the current one have not made any significant changes. There are some groups calling for significant changes (the increase to 450,000/year) but so far the government has not even indicated it will change.
  18. Yes, DND projected they could cover the gap until the F-35s were delivered. They made that projection back in 2012 when the KPMG report came out, and it projected that we would be taking delivery of the first F-35's this year. Now 5 years later and the government sat on its butt and did nothing so that projection no longer holds true.
  19. Where do you get that from? I looked at the statistics up to Q3/16 and I don't see any appreciable trend difference. Yes there are a few more sponsored parent/grandparent in '16 than there were in '15, but actually less than in '14. The only category that increased slightly seems to be sponsored spouse/partner. We already knew that there was a refugee increase, but that was not about immigrants that was about addressing a different issue.
  20. Nobody is saying the CEOs are not hard working and deserve more than the average worker. It is the gross disparity that is the problem. Many people work hard, or even harder than the CEOs ever did, why are they earning several hundred times less?
  21. Rate of growth has been on a steady downward path since the 60's, that is reality. Do you want to get back to 5% growth like the Twump is promising? Do you remember the runaway inflation of the 70's? What is equally important is population growth compared to GDP growth, something nobody seems to take into account.
  22. Harper regularly went to professional sporting events (mostly hockey), he travelled to his son's volleyball games, made many personal trips to florida, new york, california, etc. There is no difference between these and Trudeau going skiing, or taking the family to see Bonhomme Carnival. They are not vacations, they are day/evening outings. Only a rabid partisan would consider them vacations in either case.
  23. The largest player in that industry is Twump himself.
  24. I agree that new immigrants should be interviewed before handing out passports visas. That will cost money, but nowhere near the amount of your original suggestion. I do care who comes in, I am just pointing out that there are realities to deal with.
  25. $10 billion is new spending, most of that deficit is from lower revenue (ie. directly linked to the difference between the previous rosy projections and todays ones).
