I think that Stéphane Dion is very much an intellectual, and sometimes that can rub people the wrong way. In politics, diplomacy is as important and often more so. The smarter you are, the more diplomatic you also need to be. It seems the buffoons can get away without any diplomacy skills as well.

Can you name one advantage of coal plants? b.t.w., according to the EIA of the 4 major power sources (coal, gas, nuclear, and hydro) the most expensive is currently coal. For several years gas was much more expensive, but lower fuel costs in recent years brought it under coal. -

Nobody making the claims has focused only on urban dwellers, and there have been significant reductions across the country. Yes urban areas have much higher concentrations of pollution because there are so many concentrated sources. Coal plants have tall smokestacks and distribute their pollution across a broad expanse, and closing them has made a big difference. You are right that in urban areas we need to focus on many other sources as well. Montreal for example had a major initiative over the past few years in reducing/eliminating wood use in residences. Years ago when I did live in Toronto proper, I burned wood in a very inefficient fireplace so I was a contributor to local pollution. Vehicle emissions in urban centres are a significant contributor to local pollution, as are other internal combustion engines. If we followed the lead of doing nothing because there are other problems, we would be living in cities with open sewers and no treatment. -

I don't remember the urban part. Yes Ernie Eves did talk about smog, dust, and mercury emissions but I can't find any reference to that being an urban targeted problem. -

Let's see, Mckittrick and the Fraser Institute yet again prove that they are biased and will tell anything but the real story to somehow sell their agenda. Did you see the part about totally, 100% ignoring GHG? Did you see that part about talking about particulate matter in urban areas when the coal fire plants were elsewhere? This is not a study, it is a propaganda piece with zero basis in reality. Next, washing your hands doesn't spread germs. They will study someone in Toronto washing their hands, and prove that it has no effect on a surgeon performing an operation in Vancouver. Why, because like the above trash, they are totally unrelated. -
Mulcair is on his way out, and Trudeau has spent far more time in the rest of Canada than Quebec.

Perhaps there should be a top level welcome message that encourages new members to fill out their profile as a means of introduction. The active community here is small so regardless what someone writes, they will soon be pegged.

Yes, and injured soldiers that send up for what is right and get injured are not heroes either. Firemen that run into burning building are not heroes, etc. Putting your life on the line for something bigger than yourself is not a sign of being a hero. Blessed be those who inherit millions from their rich daddies, for they shall be the heroes. -
In Canada, the lieutenant governors are appointed by the Governor General, on the advice of the Prime Minister. The province does not appoint its own lieutenant governor. The lieutenant governors could be somewhat thought of as deputies to the Governor General, but certainly not deputies of the Premiers. Yes, the role is similar to the Governor General but at a provincial level. I believe in Quebec the lieutenant governor does not read a speech from the throne at the opening of a session of the legislature.

Are we talking about Donald Trump here, because that comment applies to him in spades. -
What is your suggestion? Did the world attack South Africa? Short of military assault, I would say the world has done everything possible against North Korea.

The Sunday Times is reporting that Trump will meet Putin in Iceland in a few weeks. I guess high fives, hugs, and kisses all around are in order. -
Actually Steele (Orbis Business Intelligence) was hired by FusionGPS on behalf of some unnamed Republicans during the Primaries, rumour has it that Jeb Bush was the main instigator but that has yet to be confirmed.

Certainly the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) self identify as Christians, and polygamy was for a time a controversial part of their religion. We should also not forget Matthew 25:1-10 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

Many religious traditions are rooted in even earlier traditions. The "Golden Rule" for example was expressed thousands of years before Christ. It is generically known as the Ethic of Reciprocity, and any examples are found in early cultures as diverse as ancient Egypt, China, and India. Modern law only recognizes 2 of the 10 commandments, those against killing and stealing. TheSumerian Code of Ur-Nammu addresses murder, and it predates the time of Moses by around 5-7 centuries. It is hard to separate religion from governance and recording of history, as the Christian Church was certainly powerful and monopolized those fields for many centuries.

That has to be the most insightful post about America under president Trump because truth is completely irrelevant. -
This is exactly why I try to avoid using labels like atheist, agnostic, etc. They have slightly different meaning to everyone, and regardless if you think your meaning is the right one the fact is they are useless for communicating. Generally there is a bit more congruence around theism, meaning the belief in God (or possibly gods). I am not a theist, I follow science. Notice very clearly that I didn't say I was a scientist or that I believe in science. Science is a process, not an absolute. Science is about building/expanding knowledge about the universe (reality) of which we are part. What separates science from theism is that the explanations and predictions from science are testable. I don't have any beliefs for or against a God (or many gods), I have a foundation of acquired knowledge. Agreed, perhaps I should have put "representative" in quotes because we all know that it is far from perfect. Let's leave it at that, or start a new thread or continue an existing one on democracy so we don't derail this one.

Not to worry, come January 20th a miracle will occur. -
Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.… - Winston Churchill

Where did I say that? I follow Canadian laws because we have developed a country that has a reasonable balance. There are many Canadian laws that I disagree with, and will try to get changed through the established democratic process.
