Alcohol sold in Ontario corner stores
Boges replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
So if they allowed competition, by letting other outlets sell alcohol. You think they'd mark-up the price similarly? I doubt it. The LCBO's overhead must be huge considering the fact they pay their employees Union wages, they publish a useless magazine and they advertise on every radio station on the hour. -
We're back to this again. The CFL's best Defensive player a few years ago was a BC Lion. He's a great player for the Miami Dolphins right now: Cam Wake. A Defensive CFLer making it to the NFL is very rare though.

You just said that the LCBO isn't at fault for the mark-up they apply to alcohol. According to that article the mark-up is more than twice the the price the LCBO paid for the bottle in the first place. Tax not included. -
I'm not defending them. I'm nowhere near a Lions fan. But the post-Matt Millen era has done much better in picking up good talent. Ndamukong Suh and Nick Farrier will make their defense very formidable. I'm not saying they're willing the Super Bowl this year, but they aren't the bottom feeders they have been.

BTW according to this article, you're wrong. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/07/27/lcbo-could-teach-capone-a-few-tricks -

I re-read the post and edited. Licbo is slang for LCBO. So you're saying that it's not the Province of Ontario that makes alcohol far more expensive in Ontario than in any other place in Canada? -

You can buy Beer in 40 oz Bottles at corner stores in Quebec. You can already buy Wine in Grocery Stores in Ontario. Convenience stores have got to great length to ensure that underage people don't get access to tobacco. -

Of course it's about the LCBO, it's the only place in the province you can buy most alcohols. An they arbitrarily ban types they don't like. -

It's funny we say Licbo is all about controlling the consumption of alcohol. As if going from $1 a beer to $1.25 a beer makes a huge diff in people's consumption. Yet anyone who listens to radio will hear ads glorifying alcohol use. Of course at a huge mark up. -

Yeah 60% in any election will probably get you a huge majority. So you justify any tax by saying it funds hospitals? I doubt Quebec is in the shits because you can buy beer anywhere. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with their stagnant growth and bloated public service. Don't they have $7 daycare there? In the Sun today a columnist said that Licbo pays $5 to buy a bottle of liqour they sell for $25. I bet the mob doesn't even have a Vig that high. -
The price of alcohol in this province is a crime. And the fact that we have to pay to fund these lavish LicBo's and hear ads on the radio every half an hour telling us that $2 cans of imported beers and $25 bottle's of rum are actual deals. It's obvious that a vast majority of Ontario agree that we are being totally ripped off. This has nothing to do "Social Responsibility" and everything to do with lining the pockets of the provincial government. At the very least they shouldn't treat people in the province like kids and allow us to purchase beer on the Mac's Milk across the street. Heck they can sell Tobacco! You can't even advertise Tobacco in Ontario. It's beyond me why Tim Hudak hasn't jumped on this bandwagon already.

In the next episode that wife-beating hick gets eaten by a zombie.

Shwa you really didn't prove that the Libraries are being well used. You only cited a Star article that quoted the the Library service that said check outs are up 15% over last year in June. That doesn't mean much when this debate is about individual libraries. But then Slate give an example of a Library that could probably be closed because it's located near a bigger one. I suspect that's not the only example of this.

The Detroit Lions actually have the makings of a good team. Being in the bottom 5 so many years in a row will do sthat. Their QB Matt Stafford needs to stay healthy though.

LOL believing that the Bloc's policies are good for the country as a whole.
-
You're like Black Dog, you require stats when your position is challenged yet provide very little to defend your position. The claim is that "SOME" cuts in Library services might be needed to fill the budget hole. The response isn't to ask if those cuts could be endured without greatly reducing the average Toronto resident's access to free internet and books. BUT to call anyone who would even consider cutting anything related to Library services an anti intellectual idiot. It's elitism at it's worst. I can't prove that the cuts ARE needed, but you also can't prove to me that they AREN'T. The only retorts on this issue are because he took shots at Margaret Atwood, pronounced Library wrong and said something regarding Tim Horton's. What about calling Margaret Atwood anti intellectual for condemning the idea of Sun News.

Yes but I think this is the first time a party that got pwned in Quebec still received a pretty strong Majority. Quebec is an irrelevant piece of crap if you ask me. They do nothing good for this country. Montreal is nice though.
-
Well I suppose you should run for premiere of the province then. Yours, John Tory
-
Quebec will become less and less important as the population moves west. Harper is proposing adding seats to BC, Ontario and Alberta none in Quebec. In fact if it wasn't illegal the proper course would be to remove seats from Quebec.
-
Wow what a biased story. And that one stat doesn't really say much. Again Ford isn't saying he would close every library. Only a few to make the service more efficient. How does the library usage compare to say 15 years ago when internet didn't have the effect it does now. You suspect stuff coming from the Ford's is a lie but when it comes from the Star it's totally legit? PLEASE! And it seems Libraries aren't this sanctuary for reading as much as a free internet cafe. Sort of flies in the face of all those people who say anyone who don't think all of them are sacrosanct is a dummy.
-
I also suspect the demand for these libraries when they were built and now are very different. Certainly the demand for books stores are.
-
Well Tim Horton's puts stores where they believe there's a need. I've heard They bought land in North Halton and don't plan to build anything there for years because they believe there will be a demand in the future. If that demand doesn't materialize the store is closed. I know there are two Timmy's and a Timmy's in an ESSO within walking distance from my house and all are well used. If all these Libraries are packed and being well used I guess that would be a defense against closing them. So far I have not seen that defense being used however.
-
Well how many Libraries does a city or town really need? I think the Tim Hortons remark was meant more as an off the cuff remark. Everyone knows there are Tim Horton's everywhere you can sort of grasp the issue of there possibly being too many if you make that comparison. I'm sure he wasn't willfully lying to make a point.
-
Well you ask the Ford's Toronto a quarter billion in the hole. Apparently some councillors dispute that. I don't have access to the books so I have no idea. But if they are in the whole by as much as the Ford's say. I think closing under performing libraries is probably a good idea. From what I hear there are ares of Toronto where you have one at every block. I don't live in Toronto so I can't comment on that. But again if it's true that perhaps cuts can be made.
-
I guess. I really don't have a use for a Library at this stage in my life. If I want to a book I can buy one and I have access to internet in my home. Last time I used one was when I was in school finding source material for projects. The Librarian surely didn't help me with the project, that would have been cheating anyway. But tell me, what do they do that warrants 6-figures?
