  1. Because it's not about Jack, it's about the griever. Social Media has made every personal thought something that the world needs to hear. It's a worrying trend. BTW anyone who's shocked that Jack is dead clearly didn't see his News Conference last month.
  2. I bet she/he did the same thing when Amy Winehouse died. However I suspect that post is a massive troll job.
  3. Please tell me. What can the CBC say that, perhaps the CTV New can't. Maybe that's why CTV is more popular than the National. You also haven't addressed why the CBC is deserving of that money when they are simply doing similar stuff to private companies.
  4. Unless you're a vet or someone who lived thought WW2, you probably shouldn't weep over the death of someone who died in the 40's. However to compare Jack Layton to a soldier that died in WW2 is totally offside.
  5. I totally respected Jack as a politician. I thought he was fare more genuine than anyone that ever led the Liberal party. I do feel this Orange Crush thing is a sham and his party isn't any better suited to make a difference than they did pre-May 2nd. What I find offensive is this rush of Grief Pron. And the vitriol focused on anyone that doesn't say Jack was a great man seems to be totally opposite to what he said in his final testament.
  6. I would like to point out how hilariously ironic it is that Christie Blatchford is getting a deluge of hate mail from her column where she simply points out that Jack was a politician until the end and that this pattern of grief porn when famous people die is troubling. I thought love was better than hate?
  7. Yeah because the CBC doesn't have a bias when it comes to serving it's own interests. CTV, Global, CityTV all do fine jobs reporting the news every night. They just don't have the resources CBC does because they don't get a $1.2 billion cheque each year with no question asked. Also you can't compare print publications to TV's. Totally different animals and print publications get no government money that I'm aware of.
  8. There isn't a double standard. If Canadian television can't survive without some government money, I may not like it but I'll accept it. I don't mind some of the Canadian content I see on cable. Slice, FoodTV G4TV, even History TV has some really good Canadian content and in HD too boot. What the CBC does is take 1.1 billion loonies in the name of Canadian Heritage and refuses to say where the money goes and then buys Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, BBC Soaps, pays to have Hockey player Figure skate and make fun of Christians in Saskatchewan. There's a difference. Why can't we find out how much Peter Mansbridge makes? He's a public servant afterall isn't he?
  9. Actually I'm not too concerned with the super rich, nor should governments. They can pay what they pay and still have enough to feed the economy. I think a lot of the problems the US is having is that they are too afraid to tax the rich like they did in the boom periods of the 50's. I am concerned with increased taxation on the middle class and lower middle class though. And unless you're in a Union, I don't think the likes of the NDP care too much for you. When you start lowering the definition of what "rich" means then, I'd argue, you start eroding disposable incomes of average people. This is why I find the idea that Liberals speak for "working families" hilarious. No they don't they just want more money from them so they don't have to be efficient themselves.
  10. Also why does Toronto need a CBC Radio station without commercials that has an obvious political slant. There are already two AM talk radio stations and a news station that do just fine in Toronto. Lemme guess but Left-wing radio is always a failure so it needs to be propped up by the gumint.
  11. Which is why it should be defunded.
  12. HNIC funds itself. I'd prefer TSN to do more playoff hockey, they do a better job but I have no right to be offended by it. But if taxpayer money goes into Battle of the Blades and Little Mosque on the Prairie, yeah I can be a bit miffed by that. Even if it is profitable it's not what the CBC is for. And why should they even be allowed to pay for programs like Jeopardy and Coronation Street? I'm not a blanket CBC hater. Marketplace is a good show a lot of the time. I'm sure they couldn't do what they do on shows like that without extra money from the government. Also a lot of the Docs they broadcast are good. But Most of them are third party, not produced by the CBC. My point is that most of the popular things the CBC does, fund itself. So where the fuck does the billion dollars go? Oh wait we don't know because CBC won't tell us. Which is one reason why Sun News is on them so hard. If they are a Crown corporation they should let everyone see their books.
  13. Here's the thing that bugs me about the CBC. I believe sports funds itself (as it should) So the fact that HNIC is popular is fine. I wouldn't say that HNIC should end. The News Network is a cable channel so you have to pay to get it. I'd have to see the numbers but there is plenty of ads on the network so I'm going to assume it generates revenue. I'm guess the pay cable channel BOLD is similar. (I can't even get that channel without paying extra) But I'm sure some of the public money going into the CBC goes into the News Network. Now I've heard from people in the broadcast news industry that CBC News is totally bloated and very in-efficient. The only 3 things people actually watch on the CBC is Coronation Street, Hockey and the News. So why does taxpayer money have to go to crap like the Dragon's Den, Little Mosque on the Prairie and Battle of the Blades.
  14. Yeah saying love is better than hate etc doesn't make him JFK or anything but it is nice that he spoke to the country when he knew he was on his way out, It's kinda nice. I do grow tired of this outpouring of grief that follows the death of a public figure. It's more about the mourners than about the family of the dead person. It's been like this since the death of Princess Di. But anyway he had to know he's kinda effed his party up. It's basically a Quebec Nationalist party and there is zero chance of the party not moving forward without a Quebec-based leader. Unless of course they do the sentimental thing and make Mrs. Chow the leader. I wonder if Toronto City Councillor Mike Layton will run for his seat.
  15. If, for whatever reason, the US decided to go to war against the rest of NATO and/or the British Commonwealth. We'd become Holland and/or Poland circa WW2 before the rest of the world could mobilize to our defense. I would argue most Canadians would consider the US more of a friend than the British Commonwealth anyway. It's just some quirky thing we like to keep part of our identity.
  16. Good thing you're not in charge of how Federal money is allocated.
  17. What a trap question. Who cares!? If this hurts him with the far right of the party I'll be PO'd.
  18. As opposed to humans that lick each other private parts.
  19. I don't remember watching any original Canadian programming that didn't have a Canada logo at the end. So I guess getting government funding is just the way things are done. But that's different from what the CBC gets. They compete with other private companies for advertising space, rights to broadcast special events and sports. They get an unfair advantage with the extra money they receive.
  20. It's nice and all to want to save dogs that have been treated poorly. But if you don't want to deal with that baggage and have a good idea what kind of dog you're getting, doing research for the kind of dog you want is much better. Unless I wanted to breed, I don't think I'd ever buy a pedigree dog ever. Mutts and hybrid dogs are healthier and there is little chance that they've been inbred.
  21. In fairness, Jack Russels are fairly demonic. I disagree that Dogs can't show love towards humans. They are very social animals. We are more to them than a provider of food, we provide them with the pack their instinct tells them is the way they should live. One of the more heartbreaking moments I've had recently regarding a dog is when I saw the most friendly Golden Retriever at the farm of my wife's former boss. It wasn't allowed to be in the house but it would run away and get sent to the pound too often so it ended up having to spend most of it's day locked in a horse stall alone. It was very sad.
  22. I'm not saying Puppy Mills are right. And as I said, most people who buy dogs don't use puppy mills anymore because of the dangers posed by them. I'm just saying there's a difference between using an animal as a tool to make money and treating them like a pest and/or rodent.
  23. Do they get anywhere approaching 1.1 billion? Quebecor owns one of the largest chains of newspapers too BTW.
  24. The difference is that we in the West don't find dog's unclean, most find great value in them. Horses are similar to this as well. There are several ways dogs are treated in this country that appall me. One of the main things I don't like is "supposed" dog lovers breed mutants like pugs, peekanese, bulldogs etc that are just vet bills on four legs. The existence of puppy mills proves that people in the west love dogs. The demand for them in our homes is so high that people will do seedy things to meet those demands. However I rarely see dogs sold in pet stores anymore. Anyone I know that wants a dog now goes on Kijiji and will find a breeder of the breed they want that lives close by. That's how I got my dog. Now cats are a different story. The plight of a cat is often quite rough. My wife wants a cat, and I refuse. The neighbours cat that hangs out in the back yard all day is enough for me. Evidence indicates that people in the west love dogs too much. Idiots will pay $70+ for a 16kg bag of dog food. They'll buy insurance for their pet, they'll pay $10,000 for vet bills on a dog that probably cost less than a $1,000. How many specialty dog food stores are within 5 square kms of your house? Not to mention you can buy perfectly fine dog food and toys at any grocery store. That's indication that far more than not, people in this part of the world love dogs.
  25. But not because they realized the optics were hor-awful. It's cuz apparently they can't hire recently defeated politicians. CBC Newsworld is actually a pretty good channel. But the crap they put on the main network is unwatchable most of the time. Even the hockey is shitteh compared to what TSN does, with their old theme music to boot.
