Football at the high school level isn't widely offered outside of school programs as far as I know, nor is rugby. With Tennis, Baseball and Hockey you have a point. School sports is good for students in low-income areas for kids who's parents can't afford rep or house leagues. What about the Glee Club? Again it's the teacher's right but I doubt job actions like that will garner public support.

That they need subheadings.

Elizabeth Regina 2 Nope I think the standard for interest in Royals is different than that of Reality Stars. But I get where you're coming from. BTW people like the Royals about as much in your country as here. It's just official here.

So Snookie worked for it and ER2 didn't? There's a lot of responsibility that comes with being a Royal and a lot of scrutiny two. I'm rather impartial about being a Constitutional Monarchy thought. I kind of like sharing our form of government with the British Empire, but that's just me. People like watching reality shows because it's it's like rubbernecking when you pass an accident scene. I'm of two minds about it because It's interesting but by watching you sort of contribute to making people think behaviour like exhibited on these shows breed wealth.

You're comparing being politically engaged to watching TLC? Which should changed from The Learning Channel to Trash Loves Company. Look I watched Jersey Shore because it was funny, until it got boring. I assume people are watching Honey Boo Boo because it's funny too. But you have to ask why it's funny.

You mean the opportunity for some rube family to exploit their little child for money? And the appetite for people to want to watch that sort of trainwreck? Is the fact that Snooki is a multi-millionaire also make you love the Red, White and Blue?

Here's an interesting column about Krista Ford's comments. http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/08/31/barbara-kay-twitter-critics-get-it-wrong-on-krista-ford/

Sure, it's their right and coaching is voluntary. Just sayin' that the rhetoric of putting the students first should fall on deaf ears when teachers don't allow them to partake in extra-curricular activities they may love.

What video games are you playing right now?
Boges replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
I think with the proliferation of smart phone to gaming industry is making gaming a much smaller cheaper realm. The idea you can simply download a game for less than $5 and in some cases free is making people less willing to part with $60+ for a big budget game. I just bought a game on my Droid phone called Osmosis HD, very simply but fun, great graphics too. Only $3. Even the downloadable content on the consoles is overpriced. Especially considering Xbox Liver still rips you off by making you buy points in preset increments instead of just putting the actual price of the game. The game costs $12 but you can only buy $15 worth of points. -
I heard on the radio last night that some members are thinking of doing "Work to Rule" So much for putting the students first.

Apple Corporation is Bad for Technology
Boges replied to MiddleClassCentrist's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Who downloads that launcher? I can understand the Windows Phone one because you might like the simplicity of the OS but the phones available running it are limited. As people can see from the thread I started months back, I wrestled with the decision myself. But you'd assume deciding to buy an Android Phone means you reject Apple outright. -
Jack's Funeral cost $300k+ http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1249016--jack-layton-s-state-funeral-cost-taxpayers- Can't think state funerals are cheap but this one twice as expensive as the last one.

Well if that's the case. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.tikuwarez.launcher3&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImluZm8udGlrdXdhcmV6LmxhdW5jaGVyMyJd Kinda ruins the whole Widget thing though. -
Since you say everything I've learned from the media is wrong please enlighten me about this. I've read that come Saturday if a deal isn't in place the last contract renews itself and automatic 5.5% raises are given. Is this true? If it is then this legislation would be required because there would be no incentive to make a deal prior to September first otherwise. It's not like this deadline was sprung on the unions. They've known for awhile this was the Government's stance.

Boges replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
I'm stuck at a certain part of Max Payne 3. I'm just waiting for Halo 4 to come out. Lately my enthusiasm for video games has kind of diminished. Contemplating if I really need Xbox Live or not anymore. -
So does that mean they have a constitutional right to bank up to 20 sick days a year?
-
You're right the Ontario Government should cancel the Green Energy deal it has with Samsung immediately! If what people have said in this thread are correct and the teacher have no problem taking a wage freeze and this is all about 10 sick days being cut and the ability to bank them until retirement, I'm sorry but those are excellent ways for the province to save money. Call it austerity all you want. It's not like anyone's losing their job and if they do, blame the school board. Now as for the subsidies, are you certain they all go into CEO's pockets or do they help employ people? And if they do wouldn't you consider it an investment? You'd have to give concrete examples of ways in which public money is being flushed down the drain by giving it to the private sector.

Any way you look at it, it's a pretty sweet deal to make 45k-90k for 9 months of work.
-
So you're comparing elected officials to teachers? Teachers don't have constituents they have to answer to and many other responsibilities that don't involve being in sitting at a legislator.
-
So you think more people should live in Basement apartments? I spent 2.5 years of my life living in a basement apartment. Though it took longer to heat up in the Summer it got damn cold in the winter. I turn off the vents to rooms I seldom spend time in.
-
Well teachers have "collectively bargained" that they make a full year's salary pro-rated over 9 months. Many support a full-year school calender with one or two week breaks scattered throughout the year instead of 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week in March and 2 months in the Summer.
-
Does your average seasonal worker make enough money where they can take their off season off and not work doing something else? There was a thread I started a few months ago about the Federal government making seasonal worker do any job instead of applying for EI during their off months. People on this site defended seasonal workers going on EI. Would anyone defend a teacher going on EI during their summer break? That being said I'm sure many teachers do teach summer school etc.
-
Wow calling it time off and not holiday is supposed to make it different in the public's eyes? So you're basically calling teaching seasonal work?
-
Well there's also the automatic moving up the grid that teachers enjoy at certain stages in their career. Also the reason the deal will be legislated is that come September first there'll be automatic raises without a deal in place.
