You can't force people not to use plastic bags. The idea of banning a certain type of bag people use to take their groceries home just seems punitive. I don't mind charging people for them, it prevents hoarding the bags. But to outright ban stores from selling only certain types of bags seems pretty nanny state to me, especially since charging the 5 cents was doing a fine job in reducing the number of bags people use. Now Loblaws has several outlets where they refuse to even sell you bags but their a private business and that's their choice. If I don't have any bags in my car and want groceries I can easily go to another retailer that does sell bags.

Might as well have the Mods change the name of this thread to Slutty Clothes and it's relationship to the likelihood of rape.

Way to totally ignore to OP. When you say boycotting credit you mean no one should take out a mortgage or a car loan? Then how will people who can't pay cash for cars and houses have cars and houses? Everyone should rent and take the bus?
-
I never said it should be illegal for people to get hopelessly in debt. I'm just calling those people daft.

And it's an improvement!!! http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2012/09/06/savings-rate-canadians-survey.html I'm sure the usual suspects will come out and say that this is because of greedy corporations not paying people a living wage. Which may be a fair assessment but with global competition I don't think that will change any time soon. Back in the "Good Ole Days" when one person could support a family and everyone had pensions people also didn't have smartphones, internet, HD Cable TV and a lot of luxuries people that people seem to think are human rights nowadays. It also was far more burdensome to get a mortgage, granted the price of real estate was far less. Remember as the minimum wage goes up so does the cost of living. In Australia it's $14/hour but stuff costs up to twice as much as it does here. People bitch about Wal-Mart but it does allow people that make less to afford good quality food and clothing that they may not otherwise be able to afford. I think part of this is that people just don't know how to budget properly. They take out mortgages they can't afford, buy cars they don't need, eat-out in restaurants multiple times a week, don't brown bag their lunches etc. I'm personally shocked when I hear a person has multiple thousand dollars of credit card debt. Recently I just plain forgot to pay my Mastercard for two days. On a bill of like $400, they charged my almost $10. FOR TWO DAYS!!! It takes a special kind of incompetence to think making the minimum payment on your CC is OK.

So we'll have to wait awhile to see if Ford loses his job. He was on the stand for four hours yesterday and basically plead ignorance. Even supporters would have to say, seeing him admit to never reading the Councilor handbook and never attending the Councilor orientation, makes him look foolish. Of course he does a lot of stuff that makes him look foolish. He'll probably be found guilty of a conflict of interest but since he stood no real personal gains from his conflict of interest it's really hard to think the judge will turf him from office for $3,000 raised for a charity and that he voted not to repay the donation.

Quebec Election 2012 -Unpredictable
Boges replied to August1991's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Actually it's quite the opposite. People in ROC are rather ambivalent to Quebec and only get their backs up when they hear the anti-ROC "crapola" coming from the likes of the PQ. In what other province could anyone get away with saying only people that speak English could run for office? -

Yeah and that helped -
That's the thing, for people that choose to pay more for marginally better tasting food it's their choice. But organic food isn't a solution to feed the world.

At least in Ontario, when people shoot each other they use illegal firearms from the states. -
That's the interesting thing. People who, otherwise thing science is great, think making food that is more durable and yields higher results to feed the people on earth are the devil.
-
So people should spend much more for food because of some nebulous fear of pesticides?

Well the main point of this thread Ford's impending court case. Massive thread shift has occured. Someone who would force themselves on a woman, regardless of the circumstances, is wrong. And the fact that they would take pleasure in doing that has some serious moral issues. And a woman being raped regardless of what they are wearing, should never be blamed. That being said, when someone says prudence should be taken when going into a place where assault is more likely, they shouldn't be demonized as someone who "blames the victim".
-
You said I'm just speculating as to why this may be.
-
No where in that study say that there are ways to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" that rape occurred without some physical evidence behind left behind. Sort of like domestic violence. If a woman hits a man and doesn't have any evidence of that she did (bruises or injuries) how can any charges be laid? I'm not saying it's right that rapes go unreported but just as the burden of proof for committing a crime is high in instances of murder, robbery etc it's got to be the safe for rape.
-
Probably because it's very difficult to prove a rape happened unless there's bodily fluids and genetic trauma observable, otherwise it's he said she said. Take a look at what happened in the Duke Lacrosse case in the US. To discover those things an invasive rape kit has to be performed. I'm not taking a position on this just stating what appears to be the facts involved.

I've been told Tomatoes are picked green and ripened on the way and that's why they don't nearly taste as well. You can buy vine-ripened tomatoes to know that they've been grown on the vine then shipped. Sure locally grown produce would taste better because they aren't shipped across a continent regardless of the method they've been grown. But some food can't be grown in Canada so they have to be shipped.
-
Well why does anyone do anything illegal? Should there be a renewed public awareness campaign that rape is wrong? Similar to the idea that shooting people in a street party is wrong? Are rates of rape and sexual assault on the rise? And if they are, what would you attribute that to? The events that spawned Krista Ford's comment were apparently perpetrated by one guy. The media attention it's garnered certainly is an indication to the public that this guy is a vicious criminal.
-
But you wash that stuff off. Much of the produce you pick up at the grocery store is being sprayed with water while sitting there. What does pesticide taste like anyway? This study indicates that even if there are pesticides on your food is fall within safety regulations.
-
Other than the fact it's illegal and being convicted of sexual assault is a serious crime results in lengthy jail time?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Zqe4ZV9LDs If you think you're overpriced organic food should taste better, it probably will taste better, in your head.

Organic food is a giant scam. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1250668--organic-food-may-not-be-any-better-for-you-study-finds I generally wash produce to get rid of pesticides. That being said, avoiding the potential for pesticides on your food wouldn't be a good enough reason to play the extraordinary premium put on the prices of organic food. The antibiotic debate for meat is an interesting one. I'm not terribly concerned with that because aren't we all cooking our meat? What I find with organic food is that the methods modern society has come up with the make getting food to the masses more affordable and more efficient is being renounced by a segment of society that thinks these methods are bad for our health. They're the people that can afford to pay $5/pound for carrots though. I'm glad that there's a study like this as evidence that their organic crusade is just a form of snobbery.

Seems like clumsy writing to have the reason Hank finally is able to figure out Heisenberg is Walt is that Walt leaves a book given to him by a former co-worker on top of his crapper. I guess it shows Walt's hubris but for someone so careful to be caught like that is weird. Also clumsy writing in having the Neo-Nazi guys mention the killing of bin Laden. This is supposed to be in 2009. They did it last week as well with Sckticky infomercial being shown. Otherwise that episode was brilliant. The two montages with the Prison hits and the Blue Crystal song were terrific. I'm going to miss this show for the next several months.

You two are making this Apple hating thread very boring.
