Both are just punitive ways to make consumers pay more for goods. At least with the Carbon Tax the way the Liberals framed it in 2008 people would see some reduced income taxes to lessen the impact of the increased cost of products. Cap and Trade just sounds like a complicated shell game that only proves to lower people's quality of life. I'm happy the CPC decided not to support it anymore.

How to bring internet and movies on TV?
Boges replied to cadfx's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Cool another Apple hater. That's the trade-off going the internet route. You get content later and at a lower quality. Netflix is an excellent service but it makes you wait up to a year for TV. They get some movies out really quickly now though. I saw at the Emmys last night that a show called Homeland did very well. In Canada you can't get that on Cable unless you subscribe to a separate movie service called The Super Channel. It's like $15/month and shows second-rate movies usually (many movies that are available on Netflix ironically) So I may consider going the bittorrent route to watch Homeland. Unlike the TMN/HBO/CW subscription, you don't get your money's worth from the Super Channel. Lots of great stuff on the TMN/HBO/CW. My wife loves the CW shows so she wants to keep the subscription. -
If you can afford to be that picky about the home you live in, then why forgo AC? Yeah but Central Air is a lot more efficient. You still need a method of getting the hot air out (likely a window)

Doesn't iTunes do that? -
Running 3 window units probably use up a lot more juice than one central air unit, and you don't have the luxury of a programmable thermostat. Plus they look really ugly and cheap coming out of your window. My neighbour has one coming out of their bedroom window, it drips water and is quite unsightly.

It is easy, I do it sometimes if I do miss a show or accidentally delete it from my DVR, the quality isn't as good. Again if you're happy stealing all your TV shows, then great. If people didn't subscribe to HBO then there would be no Game of Thrones for you to steal. -

Sure there are ways around having cable. But it's not nearly as good as cable. 0% of Jays and CFL games are on OTA anymore. So if you like Sports you pretty much have to get cable unless you're satisfied streaming crap. The other really cool thing about cable/satellite nowadays is the DVR. Scan what's on TV for weeks to come and record it without having to remember when the show comes on. I love it. -

That's a rather silly blanket statement. If sports are dumb why does our National Broadcaster devote so much time to showing it on Saturday Nights and throughout the spring? Sure if you don't want the convenience of watching high-quality Television on demand then fine. But it's hilarious that people think streaming a show on their lapper is just as enjoyable as watching it in HD on a 50" screen. -
Sure it does. Who wants to buy a house without Central Air? Even if you rarely use it, having the option is nice.

$40 million to relocate the Oakville Plant to some place called Bath. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1261377--oakville-power-plant-will-cost-public-40m-to-scuttle Stupid Dalton!

I'm sure you have plenty of evidence to support your claim that people who oppose the Quebec sovereigntist movement are racist bigots. Is there anymore whitebread place than Quebec, where they want to ban hijabs and burkas?

Well that's complete BS. Want to watch Monday Night Football? The CFL? Most Leaf Games? (when they end up playing again) Breaking Bad? HBO? Anything other than cruddy network TV from Toronto or Buffalo? Then by all means get the HD rabbit ears. But don't pretend to say you're getting most of what cable has to offer. Very little of what you can over the interwebs is full HD. And if you're downloading content to get a majority of your TV viewing then you'd have to have an unlimited internet limit if you value watching stuff at full HD. Streaming Full HD off of Netflix runs around 2 gigs an hour+ You'll use up your data pretty fast if you download all your stuff at that quality. I use the web for Streaming sports when my teams aren't on TV. It works but it's pretty shitty. Want to talk about ads BTW? Websites that stream content for free plaster your screen with intermittent pop-ups. More annoying that normal ads IMHO. -

An Xbox 360 is a pretty good media extender. They start at $200 now but obviously you get more than just the ability to stream downloaded content. If you buy a Wifi enabled 360 you won't even need to hook your Computer to the TV. That assumes you use a Windows PC. I'm not sure the compatibility of a Mac to an Xbox. If you have a Mac you should probably get an Apple TV. I guess I'm one of the few people that still values the variety cable TV offers. I do enjoy Netflix to but only to compliment my cable viewing. If everyone downloaded their TV shows illegally through a bittorrent we'd soon see a reduction in quality programming. The best TV comes from premium and basic cable programming like HBO and AMC now. I know several people who just wait to watch the programming the next day by downloading. It's the way entertainment consumption is going. Cable providers will need to adapt. A Netflix or Youtube model for new TV programming will likely be the future of TV. -
We have a beer snob on our hands. Just picked an example of a domestic larger. In my circle of friends, if we want to get our drink on, we usually buy a Niagara Falls beer called James Ready, it's cheaper and 5.5 alcohol. You wouldn't be going to a Mac's Milk to get beer unless you wanted to get your drink on anyway. Or perhaps decided to entertain at the last minute.

Can't you get beer and wine at convenience stores in those provinces? I know you can in Quebec. Most convenience stores are open 24/7.
-
That's fine, but if I want a 6-pack of Canadian I shouldn't have to go into a Lickbo between the hours of 11am and 9pm.
-
Not really. In rural areas I hear they do simply because, I guess, the province doesn't see a cost benefit analysis of having an LCBO there. Some grocery stores have Wine retailers, but they only sell Ontario wines and have to be closed by 6pm on Sundays and 9pm on Weekdays. Other than that it's The Beer Store and the LCBO and that's it. Convenience stores have been begging the province to allow them to sell beer and wine now that tobacco sales has been reduced but our idiotic premier has refused. It's a major cash cow for the province. News came out yesterday that the LCBO actually requested that a French supplier charge them more for a shipment of Brandy because they have a set mark-up and the price they were charging would fall below the minimum price they want to charge. Ontario is becoming a real nanny state, it's really annoying. But that's for another thread.

Are people who don't have kids selfish?
Boges replied to Black Dog's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Society has changed where having kids is far more expensive than it used to be. Couples want to have disposable income. Financial independence is happening a lot later for young people these days. The census number also show a large percentage of people in their 20's still live at home. I'll admit that I only moved out once I got engaged so the pooled income allowed both of us to have a similar standard of living than I did living with my parents. But I'll admit being married for a few years now and in my 30's I see that window closing and I think I should probably have kids soon. A friend of mine who's the same age and has two kids says you'll never be able to afford having kids. You'll always have to make sacrifices. -
Sure but you have people like Jacee excusing Albertans as being racist hicks. Some parts might be full of them, but other parts are quite progressive. Just like in Quebec. I never said they were unfriendly. I'm just saying my only experience with Quebec was a city that was very English so other than the nice bagels, smoked meat and really nice old town, It didn't seem a heck of a lot different than Toronto to me. Oh and Quebec and Alberta both don't treat people like children forcing us to go to a government retailer for beer and wine, like Ontario does

I dunno I hear Banff is rather beautiful. Calgary is a pretty cool trendy city too I hear. Heck they hired a Muslim mayor! When would anyone in Quebec ever do something like that? Alberta appeals to rural conservative types. As someone who lives in the 905, I think I'd actually like it. It's ust so expensive to fly out there. I've only been to Montreal, it's a nice city but also very English friendly.

Apple Corporation is Bad for Technology
Boges replied to MiddleClassCentrist's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Microsoft does a decent job with it's XBL system for distributing indie console games. I don't play games on my PC so I can't comment on Steam. An App Store or Google Play system for Xbox or PC gaming would be great. I hate buying stuff on XBL because it has pre-set denominations for purchases. Things might cost 800 points but you can only buy points in of 700 or 1400 point increments. It's pure BS! The reason I didn't go the Windows Phone route is because it looks way to simple and the ability to customize looks very limited. I just downloaded a new launcher on my Android phone and mixed things up on how my apps/widgets are laid out. Things you really can't do on iOS Windows Phone. -
Perhaps some who used to live there. But I'd reckon that people in Ontario feel no more allegiance to Quebec than they do Alberta.

If I was in BC This would piss me off

Harper prorouged the House of Commons twice. First to delay a possible overthrowing of the government and the second time he just delayed the Spring session by a month or two when the Olympics were going on. This is nothing like what Harper did. -
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1259386--christy-clark-cancels-b-c-s-fall-session-in-legislature I suck at my job and no one likes me so I'll just stay home. Ontario's premier is horrible but at least he'll face his opponents in the legislator.
