McGuinty Resigns as Premier of Ontario
Boges replied to nittanylionstorm07's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
The GG or LG really should have to answer to the head of the government. They're only symbolic heads of state. If they can use their discretion on matters of governing, then what's to stop the Queen from doing the same thing?- 185 replies

Apple Corporation is Bad for Technology
Boges replied to MiddleClassCentrist's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Did Google develop the search engine on their own? The funny thing about the Apple maps thing is that there isn't a Google Maps or Youtube App available in the App store anymore, so people who want to use those products have to use a browser to access those sites. They should have had Apple Maps as an optional map and still allowed people to you Google Maps if they wanted. -
Isn't this more of a Provincial Forum issue? I still contend that Harper doing this in 2008/9 was a necessity. Not so much in 2009/10. The alternative to proroguing in 2008 was another election. Dalton did this to try and save the party because had he stepped down, they'd be leaderless going into a likely election. I would actually prefer the House not be prorogued and just have the opposition parties sign a promise not to bring the government down until a new leader is named.

Well until the next election. How exactly can the opposition top him from passing this bill? I hear this bill will have some MP pension reform so it can't be all that bad.

Some people find this series boring. It's definitely a slow burn. But when it gets exciting, it gets really exciting. And rather brutal. I haven't seen violence, like I've seen in this show, in any show. True Blood is violent, but it's cartoonish violence, same with Walking Dead. This is realistic violence. The worst from last season was when a gangster kills a woman lying naked on the ground (very shocking scene) The second season was very hit and miss. Once they reach the farm, the show gets very annoying. There were episode that made me rather angry at the end, thinking "WTF was That!!!" The second season does end on a rather high-note and though the third season just started last week, it appears to be picking up right from where it left off.

Well you have to see what's being proposed before you get all PO'd. The truth is that Harper essentially has a dictatorship. I'd imagine bills like this are just pragmatic ways of getting several bills passed at once. They can propose them all separately and the result would be the same but this way it gets done quicker. Clearly today the PM is making his plans public, so it's the media and the opposition's job to highlight anything the government is trying to do that would be bad for Canada.

McGuinty Resigns as Premier of Ontario

Well I see the apathy like this towards McGuinty all the time on this site. Complete and utter outrage over a Robocall scandal that still has scant evidence to support it happened at more than one rogue riding. McGuinty oversees: - EHealth, - Health Premium - HST - ORNGE - Failed Energy policy - A Massive deficit - Bribing civil servants only to start a war with them - Trying to destroy Horse Racing (Ontario's second largest agricultural sector) only to pad friend's pockets (Paul Godfrey and Larry Taunembaum) - Cynically canceling two power plants, he initially said were essential, only to cancel them at a cost of what could approve half a billion dollars - Oh and pretty much ignoring the Drummond Report. But the response is always, Yeah but Hudak would be worse.- 185 replies

Using this logic Bob Rae should have been leader over Iggy. Wait they're both really shitty former Ontario premier's, that must be why Rae had no shot and nor does Dalton.

You mean the guy who plays Generals and Football coaches in movies? A Man's man like that wouldn't let a sleeping zombie chew on his leg. The only thing I recognize Scott Wilson from is CSI, he was Catherine's Casino owning, mob-connected father.

Cabinet Post? That would mean the Liberals would be able to form government in the next decade.

McGuinty Resigns as Premier of Ontario
Boges replied to nittanylionstorm07's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
People seem to like to ignore how much this government has increased spending way beyond the rate of inflation. To blame their financial troubles on the economic downturn and Alberta is completely disingenuous. Sure those things played a factor but the primary reason the province's books are in the crapper is because of the government itself. Also their tactic of freezing wages is only a band-aid solution. In two years (assume, God forbid, they are still in power) when the wage freeze expires there will be the same number of staff that will be demanding raises to make up for the shortfall.- 185 replies

a. Unclear; vague. At this point the plans are very unclear. If we have to wait a year before any legislation is tabled or passed, that's horrible.- 185 replies

But you don't know. . . So currently it's indefinitely in·def·i·nite (n-df-nt) adj. Not definite, especially: a. Unclear; vague. b. Lacking precise limits: an indefinite leave of absence. c. Uncertain; undecided: indefinite about their plans. in·defi·nite·ly adv. in·defi·nite·ness n.- 185 replies

He got an 85% approval rating by the party late last month. Had he gotten less than, say, 70% he'd have probably had to step down then.- 185 replies

Quite frankly I'm rather sick of the Hudak bashing. Many leaders lost their first election. (Dalton and Harper both did) Hudak was cocky last year and thought that he could coast to a victory by not being too extreme. It was the wrong decision but I'm sure he's learned from it. Now with Dalton out, he's the veteran campaigner. I personally don't find our current PM very charismatic. Mike Harris and Dalton weren't all that interesting. So to say Hudak is unfit to lead because of his personality is wrong. Who should replace him if he's not premier material? If anyone says John Tory I'm going to figuratively scream. BTW there is some sentiment Doug Ford (Mayor Ford of Toronto's brother) should run for leadership. He says he wants to run in the next election. He'll at least lock up North Etobicoke which is a Liberal seat.- 185 replies

Well that's not exactly why Dalton quit. There was scandal due to some power plants, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. (Cue F-35, In and Out and Robocall references. )- 185 replies

Just to be clear, you'd have preferred an election to be called in early 2009. Because no way Harper was going to allow a Dion led coalition take over. Polls immediately after the attempted takeover proved that the decision was very unpopular. Harper could also use the idea of a coalition as a fear tactic to help win a majority in 2011- 185 replies

I guess. If you can't see the difference? It's obvious. Harper said he was taking a break for 2 months and said exactly when the House would sit again. Not so here. This is an infinite break that could last up to a year. Both times Harper did it, it was at the beginning of a session. McGuinty is canceling the Fall session with plenty of important work yet to be done. Anyway this thread is about McGuinty not Harper. Harper won a majority post-proroguments so it was a wise decision for him. Will doing this end up helping McGuinty? I can't see how.- 185 replies

BTW there were massive protests about the Harper prorougment. I trust there will be protests about this too. This decision by McGuinty has to be the final nail in the coffin of the government. Those Power Plant documents must have exposed some sort of outright fraud that Dalton just couldn't face while in office. His name is mud from now on in the eye of Ontarians.- 185 replies

So what Harper was just supposed to allow the Bloc, NDP and Liberals take over power with Stephan Dion! being the leader without a fight? Essentially overturning the results of the election only two months earlier? If the decision to form a Coalition was a wise one then it would have withstood the prorougment. Would you have preferred another election in the midst of the economic meltdown?- 185 replies
