Will you reconsider traveling to the USA?
Boges replied to The_Squid's topic in Canada / United States Relations
If anyone would think twice about visiting the US because of this, I trust they never travel to third-world countries for a vacation ever. -
Dude you're on a Canada Politics message board. No one here has any influence on anything, that I'm aware. People are just putting forward opinions on what they think America aught to do to prevent things like this happening again. It's called debate.

I don't think Justin Trudeau really wants to be PM.
Boges replied to Boges's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's hypothetical. Plus Jason Kenney isn't running for the leadership of a Federal party . . . Yet. Harper takes flak for his connections to Christian groups all the time. People say he has a hidden agenda etc. -
I understand why one would want to own a hand gun. Not so clear on the Bushmaster. If you use it for hunting, I'd call you a cheater. I watched a ESPN documentary last night about Bo Jackson. He does his hunting with a Bo and Arrow. Now that's Huntin'!

Chance what will? Killing sprees? Any evidence that Harper has done anything to make that more likely? Getting rid of a Long Gun Registry was a tool to eliminate a wasteful federal program. The guns in the Newtown shootings were legally owned so there's nothing to stop something like this happening in Canada. It happened in a College in Quebec years ago.
-
I think the question a Gun ownership advocate has to ask themselves is why anyone, let alone a mother in New England, needs to legally own an assault rifle? An argument can be made for owning a handgun for protection (though, it's effectively banned in Canada) But it's hard to justify needing an M-16 clone rifle for hunting or protection. You would just own it cuz you can right?

The reason this is controversial isn't because he's speaking at a Muslim Conference. It's controversial because the conference is partly sponsored by an organization that funds a known terrorist organization that lost it's charitable status. Remember the column I cite in the OP is from Tarek Fatah, a Liberal Muslim. In the column he opines if Justin will try to preach the type of inclusiveness his party would have no problem criticism a conservative Christian on like opposition to Gay Marriage. -
No, but that's where a good majority of the gun crime in both Canada and the US happen. Shooting Sprees like this are rare, that's why they're so shocking.
-
We see from newsworthy event in Toronto this summer that gun crime is more likely to happen because of socio-economic reason. Like drugs, gangs and poverty. But it only creates this massive outcry for gun control when gun crime happens in somewhat affluent areas like, say, Tucson Arizona, Boulder Colorado or Newtown, Connecticut.
-
Well that's not an apples to apples comparison. You could easily murder a former lived one via other means, conversely not ever having to use a gun for self defense doesn't mean owning it doesn't still provide that value.

Aren't there mandatory waiting periods before one can obtain a legal firearm to prevent people from getting a gun to commit a crime of passion?

Apple Corporation is Bad for Technology
Boges replied to MiddleClassCentrist's topic in Health, Science and Technology
If that was true then why was the return of the Google Maps app news yesterday? http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57559166-92/google-maps-rides-to-ios-users-rescue-week-in-review/ Apparently Apple Maps was getting people lost in the bush in Australia -
Strict Gun Laws in Toronto didn't prevent the Danzig Street Party shooting this summer. There isn't a simple answer to preventing crime like this.

I doubt this incident will change the opinions of people who support the second amendment. In fact I suspect it'll strengthen their resolve. They'll think perhaps this man could have been stopped if someone in that school was armed as well.
-
Seems that way. I heard even Obama shy'd away from discussing gun control laws today. I think it's too ingrained in their culture for them to consider major gun control reform. It's their second amendment! The most import thing is freedom of religion and speech, second; the right to own a gun. It seems silly to us looking on the outside because we don't have a gun culture. Almost as silly as government run healthcare probably seems to them.

They already have a name. His mother was a teacher at the school.

I think the US should have a long-gun registry that will stop mass-shootings. Right?

So do those Jerk Aussie DJs deserve to be fired?

Her suicide shouldn't be the deciding factor in how the situation should be treated. If it means that people will be more considerate of how the victims of pranks like this feel then there may be a positive outcome to this tragedy. What they did was douchy if she killed herself or not. The fact that she was planning it is rather irrelevant because this incident probably pushed her over the edge. -
$114,000 / federal public service employee WOW

So it's vacation is an important metric? I currently have 4 weeks, when I became full time I started with 3. I must work in poor conditions then. Correct? Also 500 over 52 weeks is about 10 hours a week. So does that mean people in France work a 40-hour work week and Americans generally work 50 plus? Or do people in France work an average of 30 hours a week and you're considering a standard 40-hour work week are bad working conditions. Many successful people work 50 hours a week plus, they do it because they love their jobs. -
Amanda's Plea to Galen Weston Jr. of Loblaw
Boges replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Business and Economy
The monkey thing was about some crazy lady that owned a monkey and treated it like a child. I wouldn't even take my dog to Ikea but she took her monkey. The thing was just so cute walking around with that coat. The former owner made the story more newsworthy by doing the media circuit and exposing herself to be a mental case. -

If the media doesn't why should we? The media cared about a Monkey in a jacket walking around an Ikea. BTW a Toronto Radio station I listen to is promoting an interview with the lady. So I guess the viral video has made the story newsworthy. -

So then her publishing her story on Youtube probably hurts her chances winning the case then. The fact that "The case is before the courts" didn't stop the Media from covering Rob Ford many instances of legal trouble.
