  1. Having abortions because it's determined that the fetus has an undesirable trait is simply Eugenics. If you can test for any number of potential problems you're goal is to have an ideal child.
  2. Those stats are useless unless you also include how many of the governments were minority or coalition governments and how many were outright majorities.
  3. PR was a failure in the 2007 referendum.
  4. Nope, can't do it. As long as you fuse the legislative and executives you can't force a parliament to go four years if it's obvious the governing party has lost the confidence of the house.
  5. The only way to legislate against it it would be to ban abortions after the sex is disclosed. If the woman/family wanted an abortion for the more acceptable reasons, like not being able to support the child, then there should be no reason for them to want to know the sex in the first place. Again I'm not taking a position on the matter but it is an unintended consequence of having unrestricted access to abortions.
  6. Many people start out as lefties but when they actually have to pay bills and taxes they change their tune.
  7. People on the left like to downgrade the value of private sector, non-union jobs. Whenever employment numbers improve I constantly hear people say that they were just "McJob" that don't supply a living wage. WTF is a Living wag anyway? The days where one person can support a family are not with us anymore. Not everyone can get a public sector unionized job. If everyone had those jobs then there'd be no one way the salaries. BTW Canada added 59.300 jobs in November. http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1298982--canada-added-59-300-jobs-in-november
  8. It's an interesting paradox. The Laws in Canada don't take into consideration the motives for an abortion so there are no laws against such things. Michael Coren brought up an interesting hypothetical argument. If you could test for a "Gay" gene would pro-choice advocates support abortions for a fetus that is genetically pre-disposed to being gay? It's well known that women aren't as respected in the Chinese community and parents prefer to have males. It's a real problem and not evidence the CPC wants to ban abortions.
  9. PD Days are set out before the year starts. In these instances they're giving parents a week at most to prepare for it. BTW shame on any parent that actually buys their teacher a gift for Christmas this year.
  10. Well this instance is unique because all the other boards in the province allow for bids. Again it wouldn't be news if the board wasn't flat broke. They could do numerous things to help with their costs but their trustees refuse to.
  11. You're really going to equate teaching to screwing in a coat-hook or a pencil sharpener?
  12. It kind of is actually. Costco specializes in bulk purchases but lots of the stuff you can buy in Costco you can buy in Walmart. In the US Walmart owns Sam's Club which is like Costco. They aren't the same but they do compete with each other.
  13. I think this excerpt from the article in the OP highlights the problem more than citing different charges without a proper explanation.
  14. It's not just any Union. It's one Union. No bidding process, the Union can charge what they want. If you knew a client had to deal with you because their employer says they have to, what motivation do you have to be competitive? There is overwhelming evidence from the Star (A left-leaning publication BTW) Investigation that this Union isn't charging a competitive wage. Other boards do a bidding process like you've said you do with the contracts you get.
  15. Not in this instance. The Board HAS TO PAY whatever the Union charges. Which is the outrage of the situation since the Board is broke. You keep talk about being competitive. There's nothing competitive about what's going on in the TDSB.
  16. Not all low-skilled labour pays a living wage . . . except in the public sector where the taxpayer foots the bill.
  17. So based on an $85/hour charge for $2,600 at the end, they must have been changing light bulbs for at least 2 days. They also charged $300 extra for bulbs.
  18. They sure don't get paid like low-skilled labour. Janitors do quite well in the public school system.
  19. For certain services I wouldn't. But there's a culture at play here where ANYTHING you do involving maintenance is against the rules and has to be left to this Union. I'm sure Wal-Mart wouldn't have to wait 7 days for defective smoke-alarms to be replaced.
  20. I bet Wal Mart isn't forced by a Union to only use one contractor regardless of price though.
  21. It would save a lot of money to have a handyman onsite that could do a variety of stuff. That's what the Janitor used to be.
  22. Was PET reprimanded for Fuddle Duddle?
  23. Didn't they agree to this in order to force them to make a deal. Sort of a mutually ensured destruction unless they act. Looks like some might prefer the destruction. One of the parties have to blink and considering the Democrats won the Senate and the White House the Republicans should be more flexible.
  24. That's not what the issue is here. Regarding teachers, they are fairly compensated for what they do. But they're throwing a public temper tantrum now because the Province, which is broke, want to pair back some of their bennies. In 2008/9 when many people were being asked to take Furlough's the teacher's got double digit raises. The issue in this thread is that a School Board, that's also broke, refuses to take part in any cost cutting measures. Yet a Contractors Union has a sole sourced contract that says they do everything in the school. Even putting in a pencil sharpener or screwing in a light bulb. That's not public money well spent. Why do they even have a Janitor if he can't do anything? The province will need to take control of this board and they'll be forced to make cuts that may not be appealing, but it's the board's own fault.
  25. So if Chemical weapons are used, is that a justification for the West(NATO) to intervene? Or will the same people opposed to the Libya invasion cry foul. How will Russia and China respond? This could be interesting, however tragic if it actually happens.
