  1. Breaking News on the Radio says that contracts will be imposed. Let the games begin!
  2. Dalton's quit but he still is talking junk. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1309503--dalton-mcguinty-warns-teachers-who-haven-t-signed-new-contracts Should be interesting to see what they do tomorrow.
  3. Well we're really not sure what the NDP has planned either. Horvath hasn't even confirmed she wants to bring the government down yet. She can get a lot of what she wants blackmailing the Liberals like she did last Summer. Hudak definitely wants to go after Unions, no question. I support going after Public Service Unions but have no real opinion on Right to Work. Here's a story about Hudak's platform. http://www.thespec.com/news/local/article/845476--hudak-ramps-up-tory-platform
  4. He hasn't pledged to introduce "Right to Work" as far as I know. He's just throwing a few issues out there to see what sticks. The issue in this thread, I think has stuck. We'll see though. I think Hudak is really looking to have a fight with the Public Service though, as Harris did. In his mind, McGuinty's fight with the teachers hasn't gone far enough.
  5. Well Unionization continues to decline on it's own. Really the only places I see unionization very strong are domestic auto sales, public service and certain specialized trades. Those are very well paid jobs already. Obviously I'm generalizing but I suspect the public's sympathy for public service unions is rather low.
  6. My support for Hudak or distain for McGuinty has nothing to do with Right to Work as I don't belong to a Union. I can cite many issues that make me hate McGuinty and/or support Hudak, right to work isn't one of them. However this alcohol issue effects many people. The fact that Duncan comes out this week with this half-assed attempt to make alcohol sales more convenient only illustrates that the Liberals know people care about the issue.
  7. And according to that poll MCC cited Hudak has some decent support for his proposal. Hudak will never get the support of Public Service Unions so it's a pretty good wedge issue.
  8. Well, other than Right to Work, which isn't a certain thing, what are you concerned with? The Liqour issue is a concern to a lot of people because Ontarians are being hosed on the price of alcohol and are also being treated like children at the same time having to buy alcohol at a government run outlet.
  9. Yeah and the Liberals treatment of teachers will move left-leaning Liberals towards the NDP. In that Poll you cite, the Liberals actually lost support. I don't see the issue of alcohol sales as a Right v Left issue all that much.
  10. That was a more tongue and cheek response to the sentiment that we can't discuss alcohol sales because there is job outsourcing going on.
  11. That's not a constructive recommendation. Would Mayor Tree Stump talk to the Toronto Star?
  12. Plastic bags are more durable. Stores used to have people actually bag your groceries too. I was in the US recently and asked if they charged for bags, the lady looked at my like I was speaking french. Oh and they had a girl bagging groceries too. Crazy place that United States.
  13. I've heard it say that Paper bag production is actually worse for the environment. People don't just throw away plastic bags en masse after using them either. You get paper bags at the LCBO, I use them when I'm cutting up onions or garlic to put in the green bin because they stink up the kitchen otherwise, but they aren't all that sturdy. I couldn't use them as a plastic bag alternative. I was looking to buy plastic garbage bags for the Christmas season since your waste production is exponentially increased. Minimum price for a box was $6!!!!! I just re-used shopping bags. WIN!
  14. You can blame the jobs outsourcing on McGuinty more than you can on Hudak. BTW making Ontario a "Right to Work" province might help that situation you know. We saw that GM moved production of the Camero to Michigan from Oshawa the same week they became a "Right to Work" state. Regardless, none of that has to do with Liqour sales, which a lot of people do care about.
  15. How are jobs being outsourced? These corner stores aren't in China.
  16. No one is saying the LCBO's should be closed. Their selection will appeal to many people. These boutiques will probably not have the greatest selection either. The selling to underage people idea isn't really an issue. Corner stores already sell controlled substances that require ID's to purchase, it's not a leap to think they'll be able to responsibly distribute the product. You can imagine an independent store owner will be far more careful not giving alcohol to minors than a Unionized LCBO employee that doesn't likely stand to lose his/her job if caught distributing to minors.
  17. Like Doug Holyday, which polls have said many wouldn't oppose. But then what happens to his seat? But you can't really replace a guy like Ford with someone like Shelley Carroll. That's a change that wouldn't be supported by the most recent election results.
  18. Interesting. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1308767--lcbo-to-open-wine-liquor-stores-in-some-supermarkets WTF does "Detroit style" mean Duncan? you effin' idiot. Sure in politically depressed places, liqour stores will be cruddy places to be in. Same as with anywhere that's not all that nice. But you can also buy alcohol in corner stores in nice wealthy suburban areas in the US. Do they look "Detroit-style" too? He's playing class politics with that comment. This is a positive direction though. I'm assuming you'll be able to also get a limited quantity of spirits at these boutique locations too. It doesn't solve the problem of hours and a lot of the time there are LCBO's in the same plazas as the grocery stores you'd probably put one of these boutique. I doubt they'll be putting one in a No Frills or a Wal-Mart.
  19. But the teacher's not challenging Bill 115 in court already? Bill 115 was brought before the house and passed. Sounds pretty democratic to me.
  20. Strongbow is the only one I've ever really seen in bars. I find it very sweet. Not all beers are bitter BTW.
  21. But this legislation has allowed them not to lock the teacher's out for any weeks. And it gives them the power to stop any future strikes. This isn't the NHL, teacher's do provide a service that many people in the province rely on. But that doesn't mean they should have the right to hold people in Ontario hostage. The teachers are challenging Bill 115 in court. Until that case is heard there really isn't anything (other than Work to Rule) that teacher's can do until then. Unless the NDP win a future election or the new Liberal leader goes back on Bill 115.
  22. Stick it to the teachers? In the post you were citing I was more critical of the Liberals than I was the teachers A wage freeze when automatic grid raises are still in-play isn't a wage freeze. Banking sick days is archaic, no one gets that in the private sector. Shame on the previous governments that gave them that benefit. But it's a problem that needs to be fixed. Teacher's aren't working for dirt and no one is proposing they should work for dirt. But when everyone else in the private sector were being forced to take furlough's or worse, the teachers were receiving double-digit raises from this idiotic premier. The province is broke and needs to cut spending somehow. I agree this legislation should be imposed on all public servants. That's what the PCs would do. It's all the more reason this government is horrible, they're using this fight with teachers as a trial run on future fights with other unions. But since, un-related scandals, have forced the Premiere to take his ball and go home, none of those fights will happen until after another election. I fully understand why the teachers are mad. I simply have no sympathy for them because this government has given them everything they wanted up until now.
  23. What incentive do the teacher's have to make an agreement (if the previous one will be the one gone with until a deal is ultimatly reached) when the employer is demanding types of concessions not seen since the Harris days? Locking teachers out would have also closed the schools, that's not something anyone in the province would have wanted.
  24. Perhaps the Fiscal Cliff thing is what the Mayans were talking about. They were just a 10 days late.

Obama will not back down this time. He has no reason to.
